What the heck is this crap about you can upgrade Tiger with it? Does the license permit it? If not, it's theft and illegal. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. If he's advocating piracy he needs to be called out on it.

Do we all really want Apple to start with draconian license enforcement like Microsoft does? :(

you have it backwards...apple clearly doesn't care, so why should we? it would have been trivial for them to have the snow leopard upgrade disc check for an existing copy of leopard...but they decided against it. regardless of the marketing they have one disc that will install on any capable machine. simple. go and look at the windows 7 upgrade chart again and ask yourself why they might have chosen to do this.

i find myself saying this over and over again in these forums...apple is primarily a hardware company...apart from a select few professional applications, for them software is a means to an end. that's why apple has no serial numbers/copy protection for OS X and why they will never support installing OS X on non apple hardware.

this will remain true as long as steve jobs is CEO...and perhaps even after he's gone if the current culture is strong enough.

Seems to be getting a good reception. Strange how the reviewers all take the spoon-fed lines from Apple though -- CNet said it's faster, using the stock Apple hyperbole, but their benchmarks clearly show it's a tiny fraction slower.

I'm not sure whether to go and get a copy tomorrow. The only thing that really interests me is Exchange support. I haven't seen a review where they use it for real -- again they just regurgitate the Apple marketing words, so I'm curious as to how well it works in a real world scenario. We use Exchange 2007 already, so it will hopefully fit well (not that there's anything wrong with IMAP).

CNET needs either their heads or God knows what examined. SL is way faster for this user.

I'm disappoined that my crappy graphics card isn't supported for Open CL, and the 9400 card is the onloy one that helps with playin back H.264, they must think everybody uses a macbook pro.

From what I've read, that has always been the case with the h.264. I don't know about the integrated cards, but there's no reason it shouldn't support the 8600m. Apple has just been sluggish in adding that hardware encoding (or whatever it is specifically) with h.264 and Quicktime.

Most Macs back to G4 PowerBooks play h.264 just fine, this just helps in some corner cases.

they must think everybody uses a macbook pro.

Many of which don't use the 9400M, just to be clear.

And for a slightly different perspective: http://www.winsupersite.com/alt/snowleopard.asp

Ehh, what? OS X has had basic multi-(core/processor) functionality from the beginning. He's obviously referring to Grand Central which is new, but does Windows really have something like that already? My impression was no, but I could be wrong. Either way, he makes it sound like OS X is just now becoming multiprocessor-capable at all with Snow Leopard.

I also enjoy how he calls Apple's installer "cryptic" without expanding what he means by that. Kind of a "cryptic" comment, you might say. And he also calls Quick Look a "new" utility in Snow Leopard.

Oh well. This is not surprising, given the name of the website. Still, it would have been nice to see a review from that perspective that didn't contain any glaring errors that suggested the reviewer didn't do their homework.

It's Thurrot. He gets stuff wrong all the time.

While I am plunking my $30 down gladly, my money is on Snow Leopard having some unannounced functionality that is important to the Tablet and/or new ways that Apple will better bridge the distinctions between MacOS and iPhoneOS computing models

The assumption here is that Apple wants/hopes/needs everyone to upgrade to take advantage of something unannounced, and are pricing the upgrade accordingly.

Here’s a post on my analysis:

UK online Apple Store has shipped this evening - with 3 business days indicated for delivery time.

But not this. His review is a bit snarky but not really that different from the others.

No, he still gets stuff wrong.

GrandCentral is not the first time Mac OS X has supported multicore/processor operation. Etc etc etc etc etc etc ...

The guy's got an unhealthy obsession about Apple and their products.

Could be. Apple has done this before. When they introduced Cover Flow everywhere, people said "huh"? Then came the iPhone and iPod Touch and suddenly having that interface made a lot more sense.

No one is grilling them for no cocoa iTunes i guess thats good but I'm still hoping for it at the ipod event.

My SL already has its FedEx tracking number.

According to Apple 800 line (US) SL will be shipped to customers that already bought online, ONLY on the 28, i.e. online users will be receiving their copies only next week. My online status , is still "not shipped". The method will be USPS, i.e. not fast as UPS or FEDEX.

This isn't true for me. My SL is with FedEx. And, I expect to see it tomorrow.

Maybe you missed the deadline for Friday delivery..

...
IF it had been illegal, I'd have been quite miffed myself - not out of any high horse perspective (I'm no saint) but because Apple are so trusting and I wouldn't want to see a widespread break in that trust. I actively support it, such as buying a Family Pack for my own 3 Macs knowing that I could easily sneak the single one on. Trust is worth making yourself worthy of. But as it's legal, it's a different ball game, if I had a Tiger machine still, it'd be straight on there!

Oh please. Stop putting Apple on a pedestal. Steve Jobs is not a good samaritan, he is in business to make money. The fact that Apple chooses not to enforce licensing by making users type in an individual key for each copy of the license is not because Steve trusts you, it's because he thinks that in the long run, Apple will make more money by winning over people who will then buy Apple hardware, and not having to spend all kinds of money on staff etc. to verify CD keys etc. License fees are small potatoes compared to hardware purchases. Apple knows anybody who steals the OS has already shelled out hundreds or thousands of dollars on Apple hardware. Other companies, like microsoft, have no such re-assurance, since they sell only software, and thus they need to put more effort into protecting it. Apple is a business like any other. They do what they believe is in their own self-interest at all times. I guarantee that in this regard they are absolutely no different from microsoft, adobe, etc.

"Snow Leopard DVD isn't an "upgrade" at all; it's the full-on Mac OS X operating system."

"Even though Apple suggests Mac users without Leopard buy the $169 Mac box set to get Snow Leopard, anyone can purchase the $29 Snow Leopard disc and install Snow Leopard in its entirety without having already installed Leopard."

"This means the $29 Snow Leopard DVD isn't an "upgrade" at all; it's the full-on Mac OS X operating system for 30 bucks. (Something we missed yesterday when we told you how to prep your mac for Snow Leopard and have since corrected.)"

"I suspected this was the case, since it is with the developer build I'm running, but The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg confirms it's true for the final release as well." http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20090826/apple-changes-leopards-spots/

So is it worth going to an Apple Store for a free T-Shirt? Or shall I say will there be a free T-shirt? Will it be available when the store opens or at 6pm like in releases past?

Otherwise I'm hitting best buy and using my $5 reward certificate.

Order SL? Not me....there's something about walking into the Apple store and buying it "fresh"....and walking out like a kid who just bought a ton of candy (and good for me, the candy store is in the same mall!)...

I don't expect SL to blow me away...it's not supposed to. It is a refinement of a fantastic OS...if you want to lose your socks, wait for 10.7 (at least, one can hope!).

I have to install SL on 5 machines....can't wait for tomorrow!

The guy's got an unhealthy obsession about Apple and their products.

That's not what he says though - he says that this is Apple picking up multicore functionality that Windows has had for years which is true. Windows use of multicore processors has been much better than OS X's. This restores parity to a degree.

This isn't true for me. My SL is with FedEx. And, I expect to see it tomorrow.

Same here, I ordered at the beginning of the week and got an email today that it's been shipped Fedex Overnight... I was surprised they didn't just do 3 day and shipped it out earlier, would have saved money.

What??? Slower!!!

"Though the system performs well in everyday use, many of our tests indicate it is slightly slower than the older version of Leopard in more intensive application processes."

Wow, I am really disappointed!!! I thought the BIG FEATURE of Snow Leopard was "under the hood" improvements which would result in faster, not slower performance.

Sticking with 10.5 for now......until benchmarks start to be posted.

I read Paul's Window Supersite's quick review: I'm really sick of him throwing in "jabs". If going fully 64-bit, GCD and Open CL is a service pack, he's more stupid than I thought. I hardly doubt you can push a 64-bit OS update through a service pack. He can go to hell.

Anyone who goes to that sad excuse of a website knows that Paul is a world class douche. I don't think he was loved enough as a child...
