So you're saying the iPP 9.7 can't have the same 5 year longevity as the iPad 2 has had?
There is a possibility that the iPP 9.7 will not have the same longevity as the iPad 2 but that is not my reference point.

The clock didn't start ticking with the iPP 9.7, but with the iPad Air 2. We're not a few months into the 2GB RAM timeline but nearly 2 years.

How will it not work long term? The iPad 2 is still supported at 512mb of RAM after 5 years. I think a tablet with 4x more ram can last just as long.

This wouldn't even be a discussion had Apple just named the damn thing the Air 3.
Not true. It would be even more so because of the 2GB RAM timeline. Before the Air 2 was released there were growing complaints about the 1GB RAM in the Air. Defenders said that 1GB was fine. Then Apple produced the Air 2 with 2GB. Calling it the "Air 3" would be a more clear indication that the 9.7 form-factor was "mid-life" regarding RAM.

But hey, if you are fine with having 2GB of RAM instead of 4, I don't want to convince you otherwise.

i never buy the first version of a new ipad (ipad pro 12.9) , i always wait for the 2nd gen , hopefully it will be released in nov

Why would I need 4gb of RAM right now? I don't using editing software on my tablet.

I highly doubt social media apps, steaming movies and games will require this any time soon either. I'll def keep enjoy the cameras and screen upgrades on it though, something that is actually useful right now.

I take it that you'd find that 512MB devices are just as good today as devices with 1GB of ram?

5 years ago, 512MB was a MASSIVE amount of ram in a tablet. Now its anaemic. My iPad can barely keep web pages open, but in 2011 it was able to keep multiple open.

And yet you don't think today's RAM isn't enough to keep up for the next few years along with the huge processor upgrade?

4GB of ram in 5 years is a better proposition than 2GB of ram in whatever way you look at it. My iPad 2 would be a whole lot more usable if it had 1GB of ram.

2GB of ram is barely 'today's RAM' anyway - it was today's RAM back in 2014. Now its still fine, but its not cutting edge.

Nothing is cutting edge in the tablet and phone markets any more, they've peaked.

Lol I might have to change the thread title to "most ideal RAM" for iPads.

Sorry about derailing the thread :p

Back to the original post... I think they'll keep the iPads split between the 12.9 and 9.7... though maybe they were separated for reasons we don't know (constrain? etc) I'm not sure.

The deal with RAM is this... sure the average Joe who is using their iPad the same way as any other iPad (social media, a few games etc) won't notice the missing 2 Gb RAM as much. But the IPP (PRO) series was made for artists... people who do a lot of graphics intensive stuff! Graphics intensive stuff can really eat up your RAM. Same with things like sound studio track recordings, as the sound files take a lot of memory. I have seen 2Gb lag with these applications when there are a lot of music files open to create a mixdown, or when processing longer videos. These are reasons why 4 Gb was included in the 12.9. If you are using a smaller iPad and don't use it much for heavy editing, music or video or large photos etc. then the only reason you are going for the IPP 9.7 is the upgraded camera? If this is you, then its really not the same class of device you are looking for. Sure ok it can also use the pencil. But an iPad Air can use several really good styluses that are third party.

If you would just appreciate my post, I'm not looking for any informations regarding iPad RAMs or whatsoever, hope I made this clear.

You can just start a new thread about it and find ten times as many discussions instead of dropping these informations I don't want on mine.

Not getting the 12.9 unless they upgrade the cameras to the same specs as the 9.7

Just my honest opinion but I don't wanna look silly taking pictures on a 13" gadget. I don't see any convenience over there though.

For what a ipad should do, the 12.9 Pro is the longevity model. Even if they bring a pro 2 out, it's not really worth the extra expenses....everyone will get the same updates and the a9x and 4 gb at least secures the speed. If they update the ppi on the pro 2, expect more graphic card usage which still keeps the first ipad pro in the safety zone for speed, gaming etc. Apple is doing nothing to make the iPad pro a much better device...at this stage an update is unnecessary...both ipad pros are overpowered especially the larger one.

Wait until November. If a new revision doesn't come out, then buy it on Black Friday or something for a large discount.

If it does, buy the new one then.

Frankly as long as you can make use of it, your money isn't wasted.

I'm personally of the opinion both 9.7 and 12.9 iPP will get a late Fall refresh,

the 9.7 iPP's user base, though a good product, (imo, gut feeling of course) is going to get iPad 3 hosed,

It's coming!!! They showed a preview yesterday of the iPad Pro 2 "Macrumors Forum Edition":

Some are worried how they look, I am looking for performance in business.

Doesn't your phone make a more convenient camera and perform just as well? And if you're really serious about photography for business purposes, won't an actual camera trump a phone or tablet?

Really?? Because reading your posts, a MacBook Pro seems to be exactly what you want in an iPad.

Just because I don't revert to blind praise of the iPad does not mean I want a Macbook Pro. As I've reiterated many times on here I'd like 4GB of ram, an A10X processor and better battery life. in terms of software I'd like quite a few interfaces to actually be designed for the iPad instead of being poorly scaled up iPhone interfaces, a better way to manage files and a standard for external drives (be it wireless or not).

None of that constitutes wanting a Macbook Pro. Did people's desire to have split screen multitasking mean they all wanted a Macbook Pro, simply because the original vision for the iPad was one app at a time?

Perhaps reading your posts, it sounds more like you want the iPad to be one of these:
