Sounds like it worked out for you. So are you just going to re-order now? And be careful next time!

Yes, I will re-order. I will never again have a open drink close to my computer ever again. Lesson learned!

So I decided to go to the Apple Store and return it. I did not try powering it on at home. I just packed it in the box and brought it to the Apple Store. The Apple employee did open the box, looked at the MacBook for damage and then turned it on. It actually powered on and loaded everything up. He went into the System Preferences to change the password. Then he checked the serial. Everything was working so he gave me my money back and I was on my way. I'm really happy that it powered on. I know that it was kind of a stupid move to do that but I did not want to have any problems with it in the future. Also this is not my first Mac. I have a 21.5" 2012 iMac upgraded to 16GB of RAM and I had 2 other Mac's before that the iMac so Apple already made a lot of money on me. Please don't hate.

I'll be honest, I'd probably do the same. Who cares about morals/ethics.

You should really be careful next time though, do you plan on buying another one?

please be careful ....:) i know you wouldn't have the habit of doing this...

I know what you mean...and i know he has to take responsible...but this is 2 DAYS OLD...lol...
yes it's classless move....but he wants the computer bad...so why not.
Let him return and wait a month later and buy it. I think anyone who was in his situation would do the same...no lie.

Many years ago, I received an extra $1500 Bose sound system by accident. (They inadvertently shipped me two.) I called them, let them know their error, and returned it back to Bose. The only thing that pissed me off about the whole thing was the lack of gratitude by the person on the phone. Still, it was the right thing to do because it wasn't my system.

I once missed a flight because I forgot about a time change. Rather than concocting a story, I told the agent straight-up what happened, and they rebooked me—no charge—because they appreciated me shooting straight with them.

Bottom line,
A) Not everyone will try to pull a fast one.
B) If you are honest, sometimes the outcome won't suck.
C) If you are honest and the outcome is sucky, at least you can walk away with your dignity.

THIS is the part that I hate. If you're going to do something unethical, man up and admit it. Don't justify or rationalize your behavior by saying, "Oh, they made money on my other purchases, so it's OK." Like I mentioned earlier, that's the same nonsense white collar criminals pull all...the...time.

i won't deny those 3 points.

Didn't mean to sound like that. Just wanted to let everyone know that it's not my first Mac.

Wow, nice to see this forum is full of dodgy low-class people who won't take responsibility for their own action.

All these saints on the forum kinda make me frustrated. Yes, its unethical and wrong, he knows that but at the same time you need to realize you aren't angels either. I'm sure everyone's done things they aren't proud of and they haven't admitted. He returned a macbook and Apple lost about $10 MAX and made about $500 profit within the next half-hour. Don't feel guilty, but don't be proud either. You did what you did and no one really lost. Apple is unaffected, you got your money back and someone got a (soon to be) working refurb machine.

Haha, taking responsibility for your own action does not mean you are a saint and automatically guarantee you a free ticket into the heaven when you die. Just have common courtesy and ethic. If OP can afford a MBP in the first place, then he can afford paying Apple to clean/repair it.

I'm not telling him to sell his computer online, in which case someone will be paying for his mistakes. I'm telling him to return it and get a new one. Returning it doesn't affect anyone except Apple, and frankly, I could care less if they lose a few logic boards or not, we're paying a premium on these machines and I'm sure they already made their money back when the OP bought the computer. They won't be losing money, someone will get a perfectly working refurb MBP, and the OP will get a new machine.

It's a win-win situation.

And it's because of people like you that Apple will eventually stop being so nice and about their laxed return policy and/or warranty.

To OP: own up to your mistake. It's only a liquid spill. Few drops ain't gonna hurt you. Nothing you can do about it now but remember, Karma will come and bite you in the derriere.

Yes, Apple's warranty is good. They're service is good and the only reason I'm here is because I feel their laptops are good. But let's not forget, Apple publicly tries to limit innovation and creativity by other companies (Samsung, Google). When's karma gonna bite their ass?

To the OP: count yourself supremely lucky that this lesson didn't cost you $1500 or whatever. (I might have acted differently myself, but I don't judge.)

But now, do yourself a favour and GET INSURANCE!!!

I predict the OP's next computer will have a mysterious, untraceable cat pee smell... :p

Thank you for those kind words :)

I don't understand why you're continuing to (try to) justify unethical and immoral behavior. Apple lost a lot more than $10, but even if they lost $1, it's still unethical. What other people do, too, is irrelevant; multiple wrongs do not make a "right." Honestly, you really scare me.

You really can't be serious to justify that Apple is making money, hand over fist, so it's OK to short them this "$10 MAX" profit you think they are losing out on.

I work in IT, and in the retail sector too, no less, and I can tell you that it takes time (meaning payroll hours are allocated) to refurb returned items. Not to mention costs for replacement parts as well. Yeah they may be the actual manufacturer, so their costs are lower as opposed to what they would charge the end user at the store, but they certainly don't make everything from scratch and still need to source materials from somewhere.

Spilling apple juice and maybe getting some of those moisture detection pads to turn red might be SOP for them to replace the logic board, regardless if it works or not. Again, money that you and I may not feel right now, but given that if enough people do it, you may find that next generation rMBP will no longer have reduced pricing like this current generation. The buck gets passed down and consumers are the ones who end up paying in the end. Always.

This self-entitled attitude that "well, they've already got my money" is the reason why customer service policies are constantly evolving. I see and hear about this sort of thing all the time, and it's disturbing what people think they can get away with when times are good. Don't be surprised if one day you find that the return policy will no longer be as lenient. The people who work in retail, in general, have a job to make customers happy, but that is balanced by also keeping the management team happy as well. You think John Smith and Suzy Cue can afford to be employed by the store when they are basically wasting perfectly good stock?

In my opinion, the OP should have just turned on the laptop at home; if it worked, then he should have just kept it. If it didn't work, come clean with the employees. They are human in the end, and honesty will get you a hell of a lot farther than dishonesty. But that is too little, too late, at this point.

Hmmm... someone put a deep scratch on my car bumper less than a week after I purchased my brand new 2013 car in May of this year. Makes me wonder, should I have gone crying to the dealership demanding that I get my money back (especially for someone else's carelessness, no less)?

Man, what a cheap scum-bag. Guess it's true when they say you can't teach class. Dishonesty is one trait in a man that I can't stand. Weak and disgusting. I don't really care about what Apple make and loose, but I was bought up that a mans word is a measure of the man. Guess your not much of a man. That's quite sad.

Good luck with your new machine.

Agreed.

Seems like only 10% of the people are actually ethical, based on the comments on these forums.

So disappointed in what this world has come to.

This is exactly why insurance is way better than apple care but both together are the best.

That is not fair. Accidents happen even to the most careful of us.

Indeed. My cMBP was in pristine condition. The strap of my bag broke which landed from my hip-side on to solid PCC several months ago. Dented one of the corners, and the bottom piece wouldn't properly fit. Applecare wouldn't fix, but then realized I had bought insurance from Worth Ave Group at the time of purchase. Thank God. My MBP was repaired perfectly and looked good as new.

Buying insurance at time of purchase is the most critical recommendation I can make-especially since Apple seems to be going hard-ass when it comes to repairs and replacements and Genius nowadays show no mercy. Although I have both Applecare and insurance, insurance definitely the way to go. Plus there is no limit on insurance just because you are still running a 5 year old macbook.

Also, I always have open drinks at least a foot away from my computer. I have had numerous times where this simple policy saved my ass.

I think the OP wasn't right in doing this, but he did, and I still stick to my guns. Its a win-win situation.

If I was in your case, I'd go to the Apple store, and return it. Don't look panicked, just go up and return it. I know it's not ethical and this is probably plan Z, but it's only 2 days old, chances are they won't open it up and they'll take it back no questions asks.

And if you're worried about the next guy getting an Apple Juice Pro, don't be. All returns are sent out and repaired for any damage; case, logic board, CPU, whatever the issue is they'll fix it and sell it as a refurb.

Again, THIS IS PLAN Z. ONLY DO THIS IF YOU'RE DESPERATE.

yea If I was in the OP's situation I would definitely go this route
