It's not nonsense, it is absolutely normal that your old hardware cannot be used with up to date hardware.
That's the normal run of things, especially in the computer industry.

That's total BS. Do you recall when monitors with DVI started showing up? They ALL included a - at the time - standard VGA port as well.

Apple could have included a DVI port as well on their LED Cinema.

All Apple computers are equipped with at least one mini DisplayPort (DisplayPort is the new industry standard for connecting displays), hence do not require any adapter to run the new Cinema Display.

More BS.

Until an accident with water killed my January 2007 17" MBP in May, I was totally happy with it. It was more than 3 years old, yes, but it did what I needed it to do (as a professional web developer). I could buy a just-launched display from any other manufacturer than Apple and have it work with my "old" MBP. Saying all Apple computers - in the hands of customers - are equipped with a mini-DP is obviously wrong.

Of course they could, but did they? Let me recall, no!
I'm sure you can understand the reason for yourself, if not, don't hesitate to ask.

Did I say that all Apple computers that are in the hands of customers have a DP? Let me recall again, no!
All NEW Apple computers have a DP, and why should Apple make their display compatible with older hardware? The reason is the same as above. Give it a second, I'm sure you can get it.
I should have said all new computers, that's correct. But I though that was clear, sorry. I've been using Macs for roughly 8 years now and I'm well aware that not all of them have a DP. ;)

Any updates on this? Kinda annoying to have to check back every day to see if they have it available to buy!

Your guess is as good as anyones. Could be tomorrow, could be three weeks from now.

I am getting tired of the wait too, between the 27" and the 5870 Mac Pro upgrade kit, all this waiting is really starting to suck. I am used to waiting for Apple products to be released, but usually those products have actual release dates rather than vague windows like "sometime this month."

I still cant see why someone would pay 1,000.00 for a 27" Monitor that offers NO other input or output options ( HDMI, DVI, VGA, ETC) , thats is completely insane.

I admit, Apple does offer some nice looking monitors ( and i owned a 24" ) but damn, toss in another, what? 100.00? and get a refurb 27" iMac.........

Just insane.........

FYI, MDP can adapt to HDMI, DVI, and DP (whew, lots of acronyms :))
But for a user such as myself, I am not looking for anything more than an MDP hookup, so the connection options are a non-issue for me. The only thing I personally wished for in the new display was an SD card reader, but no biggie.

I'm not seeing a $1099 iMac 27" refurb. An i3 3.06 27" with a 1TB HD sells for $1269 so I'm guessing the base iMac sells for $1199? But not $100 :p

Still though, $200 more for an extra computer is a fine deal. The 27" iMac can even do MDP input, which makes it even better.

I wonder if they will offer an educational discount on the new 27". I know before the $100 price drop on the 24" they were offering the educational discount.

In the Uk there is still a very nice education discount on the 24" despite the price drop (£530 something instead of £649).

Yeah, it looks like they still offer a $50 discount on the 24", here is to hoping there will be a $100 on the 27".

Of course there will be an educational discount, but the question is how much, and I'm hoping your right with the $100 figure.

However I am not that optimistic since you only get $50 off a $1000 Macbook, so I highly doubt it will be more than $50.

I was just at Wal-Mart.

There are 55" HD Tv's for sale for $999.

sigh, Apple, you pay for the brand.

You pay for a little more than the brand. I had a 24" ACD and I currently have a 40" 1080p lcd tv and there is a huge difference when I hook my laptop up to it. The ACD had a very crisp and clear picture to it where as the lcd-tv looks pretty bad with my laptop. Of course, using the lcd-tv for it's intended purpose to watch tv, movies, games, etc. it looks great. As a monitor for my laptop though? It's pretty miserable. When looking at comparable monitors from other brands the $999 price for what you get spec wise is pretty good. It is all relative though. When only looking at the price knowing that it is just a computer monitor, a thousand bucks does seem very high.

Definitely this Tuesday. Definitely!

On a side note, the Apple Canada site has changed their little orange tab from saying "Coming Soon" to "Coming September" to match the US site, which has always said "Coming September". I wonder why they bothered having a difference in the first place.

Also, I checked the UK site and it says "Coming IN September" Why put the "In" in there?

So many mysteries. What does it MEAN??!?!?!?!?

No, computer LCDs and TV displays are different classes of products.

Here is Dell's 27" U2711, which is actually priced higher than the ACD:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...etail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=224-8284

So is that just brand pricing too?

People do not understand they are paying for partly IPS and more important resolution.

You can buy 27" LCD's at 1920x1080 for cheap, but the high res/IPS is what makes it more expensive.

BTW, Dell dropped their price down to 899 I assume in expectation of pending CD release.

I'm disappointed that its not available today.. I'm guessing its the 2nd tuesday of September?

Yes Apple did say that the 27"inch is coming in September but Apple did not say what date in September but September is NOT over yet, we still have 3 weeks to go until this month to be over but it's kinda annoying that we cannnot reserve one but I hope we see something in upcoming weeks but I do hope that the cable is longer this time because my Mac Pro is on the floor and the 27" inch is going to be on my desk, if the cable is not long enough does Apple sale extention cable?

The cable doesn't look very long in the pictures. I bought a cheap extension cable on eBay for $5 shipped from HK. Took like a month to arrive, but hey it's here and the display isn't.

opinions..

can anybody justify the extra ~$800 for a refurbed/ebay bought iMac 27" C2D over a 27" cinema display?

id prefer the built in computer... (to match existing i7 imac).

What would you use the other computer for though? Would you be using it in target display mode? Keep in mind that in target mode it apparently keeps the computer on and awake, and that's not terribly power efficient.

I just don't see why have two.
