- To-Do's
- Access to the file system
- Notes syncing
- Copy & Paste
- No arbitrary, unpublished restrictions on alarm tones (..or anything else for that matter). If I set my alarm to a custom tone and it defaults to "Marimba", at least explain WHY!!
- Search feature in iPod
- Videos in audio playlists or the podcast list should play AS VIDEOS, not just audio. This is so, so stupid.
- Associate particular mail accounts with VPN. Allow auto mail checking settings to be customized per-account
- Multi-select in lists (existing "flick" gesture probably makes this difficult to implement, but it's really needed for deleting multiple items)

But by far the most important feature, which I'm astonished hasn't been mentioned yet, is of course the ability to fully customize ringtones and vibration for various functions. Presently it either vibrates for EVERYTHJING (calls, texts, mail, alarms, etc) or NOTHING; you can set custom ringtones for calls, individuals, and alarms, but not for texts, mail or anything else. Completely arbitrary limitation.

1. MMS!!!!
2. Copy & Paste
3. 3rd party apps (i know its comin soon!!!)
4. video recording
5. Forwarding/resending texts
6. edit multiple calenders

The big 5.

1. Disk-Access Mode (even in a limited sense. ie, the user data folder only)
2. Copy & Paste (one finger hold brings up magnifier & positions cursor, second finger hold brings up another magnifier, showing end of selection position and cut/copy/paste option "bubble")
3. Make Notes Syncable
4. Page Caching in Safari
5. Syncing should be wireless, this is not 1999.

While I'm dreaming: Bluetooth Keyboard support.

If Apple would focus on fixing these issues with their existing software, 3rd party developers can be left to create the To-Do list, MMS, VOIP's, Video Recording, Flash Playing, & all the other NEW programs we need to get this device up to date.

I swear to got, if we get another update and they've ignored this stuff and given us another obscure thing no one asked for, (yay, an itunes store! a faux-gps function! Wiggly icons!) I'm going to sell my friggin stock.

...because it will indicate that the company has gone rogue & quit listening to what its users want. A mistake Google is not making with their gPhone.

Figure it out, Apple.

the ability to forward SMS
copy and paste
the ability to "save draft" SMS message
when on a call and a voicemail comes in, INSTANT notification. . .not after I hang up the call
digital iPod interface. . .since this is a touch screen interface, I'd like to be able to bring up and use an electronic "clickwheel"
wireless sync with PC - bluetooth or 802.11n
as technology evolves, wireless charging

1. Active Sync for exchange would be HUGE for me.
2. Flash
3. Copy & Paste
4. MMS
5. Horizontal SMS and email keyboard
6. The ability to add multiple recipients to SMS and email at the same time.
7. Multi deletion of SMS and email

In that order. I have a feeling that we will see some of these in third party apps. Mainly the active sync and flash, most likely in the forms of a new mail client and web browser.

1. Active Sync for exchange would be HUGE for me.
5. Horizontal SMS and email keyboard

The active sync would be great, Im not quite sure why it's omitted on the Touch, a simple sync when it's plugged in would suffice.
I also totally forgot about the horizontal keyboard in Mail, the vertical one's far too small even for me with smallish fingers.

I would like flash, mms, copy&paste and chat.

I suspect Apple won't release iChat for the iPhone since it will take away some texting business from AT&T.
I don't see why it would. I can see how this might be the case if everyone had iphones and they installed chat applications(or loaded their current phones with a chat client)

but the majority of the people I know, don't have iphones and still use sms. even if there was a chat client available for the iphone, I'd still use sms because I wouldn't be able to communicate with certain people without it.

I am surprised more iPhone owners are not complaining about this. It is very hard to dail and drive on a phone that has no keypad.
Please tell us you were joking...

DON'T USE YOUR PHONE WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING!

thanks. :D

Probably because they don't want to listen to people bitching about their batteries dying after 30 minutes. My dual core MBP can barely handle some Myspace pages. That is an extreme case but it illustrates the problem with flash and other infinately looping content (like ads).

That is a real problem no doubt, but has Apple lost all ability to innovate? Understadnign what you are saying above, which is a real issue, why cant Apple simply add FLASH as a feature that can be turned on and off at will. Maybe even make enablement intelligent so that when I go to a specific page that has flash I can have flash enabled automatically due to prior approval.

Of course all of this ignores one other major issue with FLASH and that is memory usage. I think one key problem Apple has is that there simply isn't enough RAM space on the current devices to really make FLASH worthwhile. Apple may very well have to quadruple memory to even have a chance of supporting this really well. I'd be happy though to see them supporting the restrained users of FLASH such as CNN. Sometimes a little video make or breaks a news story.

They probabilly would eventually put in a iChat, and AT&T would probabilly pull a T-Mobile, and charge you a text message, for every IM transfered.

Here is my list, No specific order and many repeats already listed.

  1. DISK MODE access. Even if it is only the user partition.
  2. FLASH support or Apple convinces CNN and other sites to produce iPhone/Touch specific sites. I'd actually prefer sites specific to the iPhone and an Apple video solution.
  3. RAM much more!
  4. BLUETOOTH - Come on Apple fully implement the Bluetooth stack. This is an imperative with the coming SDK as frankly many apps could make use of Bluetooth communications. So support for all the common profiles is an absolute must.
  5. PDF READER - a real one that is a separate app. This device would need to be able to access the file system.
  6. FILE SYSTEM ACCESS. This is a big one as it makes for much more usable apps.
  7. SAFARI UPDATES. This is pretty obvious but again I want file system access so that I can store web sites or reference HTML files on my machine.
  8. MAIL IMPROVEMENTS. Rework the app across the board.
  9. TERMINAL APP. Yes a grand old terminal for the UNIX users amongst us. This would also mean a subset of the common UNIX command line utilities.
  10. BASH for the above
  11. PYTHON for when Bash wouldn't be right.
  12. A chat program.
  13. Enhancement to iCal. Especially with respect to repeating appointments, task and events.

This is just a short list that comes to mind real quick. I would rather have these things taken care of then to have another round of iTunes features. Much of my goals above are to make what the phone can already do more robust and feature full. I mean it can already view PDF's, but why not have a specific app to work with them on the iPhone. Also file system access is a must for advanced usage of the iPhone.

There is a voice-dial app available TODAY in Installer, called VoiceDial...

If I get voice dail in 1.1.4 I will never ask for an update again.

viewmymessages.com requires Flash -- soon Danielson... Develop for the SDK and you shall receive... Hahaha

MMS please! My mother can figure out how to use the MMS feature on her free phone but asking her to try and figure out how to enter my email address in her contact list and choose it only when she wants to send me a quick photo is absolutely ridiculous. Plus, that viewmymessages.com web site works, barely, but not on my iphone. In my opinion, not having MMS on my $600 phone is pathetic. Yes, email works for sharing photos but is extremely limiting. It is frustrating when a parent or grandparent wants to send you an instant MMS of your niece/nephew and all of your relatives receive and comment on but you have to wait until you have access to a computer to view.

Yes, there is no reason Apple can't enable a USB keyboard to connect to the iPhone connector and better yet via Bluetooth or WiFi even...

I think a USB option is definitely a 3rd party opportunity!

iChat for SDK

Expanded Bluetooth. I'd love to be able buy one of the new, tiny BT keyboards and use it with my iPhone to take notes in class. That would be incredible.

Coverflow

Coverflow for Contacts

it would be easier to browse contacts by their pictures than by names

Yes, I need to listen to my .wav voicemails from BroadVoice.com (VoIP)!

Agree w/the other stuff too.

1. Full support of Exchange
2. MMS
3. Video recording with uploading to YouTube.
4. Voice memos
5. Voice dialing
6. Blue tooth functionality expanded
7. View Word & other documents
8. Play .wav files (voicemails e-mailed from my work's phone system = .wav)
9. Ability to use iPhone as modem (3G/EDGE) for my MB (tethering)
10. Airplane mode to disable all wireless functions EXCEPT Wi-Fi. I want this sooooooo bad!!! For future airplane use (if they truly do allow Wi-Fi on plans soon) AND for taking my iPhone internationally and not wanting to pay ANY extra roaming fees, whether voice mail, call or data related.

Other random desires for iPhone...

1. True GPS
2. 3G (although EDGE isn't as bad as some complain)
3. Flash
4. Better/Cheaper/Easier way to add custom ring tones
5. Ability to disable "flip" viewing. In short, there are times I'm laying in bed... and because I turn to my side my screen flips sideways. But, I'd prefer to keep the screen "portrait" vs. it going "landscape."
