I can’t help but think it would have been better for Apple to use all that time, effort and money into improving its existing products and services. Whilst I appreciate Apple venturing into new areas, there is a lack of focus on what it has already established

If only Apple had enough money to do both at the same time

The video depicted a man in a London taxi wearing an augmented reality headset calling his wife in San Francisco
If they'd let me augment my husband into George Clooney while we're getting it on between the sheets...
Or make me pursue and shoot virtual aliens from outer space. Or, even, you know, just a baseball...
Then, yeah, they might be on to something.

But giving me shaky live video from dirty London streets, while I'm missing out on that overseas trip?
Nah, thanks. A few good pictures (from the „best camera we’ve ever shipped“) will suffice.

If that’s the case then regular consumers shouldn’t be paying $3000 for the headset. They should be paying developers an experimental discounted price.
This device is not aimed at regular consumers, but if regular consumers are stupid enough to spend 3k on a new apple headset prototype just because "SHINY!!" then so be it, I'm sure Apple won't care.

They need some sort of device out there for people to develop software for it.

Found the first article posted by MacRumors about Apple Watch and people were actually very excited. Time flies!

Health and activity trackers were an easy sell then and now.

As were cell phones and pda computers (before iPhone/smartphones took over).

But AR/VR has been out for a while and is still very(!) niche for several good reasons.

What experience or activity can only be done through Apple’s headset and isn’t done better on a Mac or other current Apple or competitor product?

I really struggle to guess what this could be.

Some Apple employees are concerned about the usefulness and price point of the company's upcoming mixed-reality headset, The New York Times reports.
This is the dumbest story I seen yet. It was discussed months ago, not even considered new or original. No way Apple would try to market something where little content exists for $3000.
Allow developers to buy DTK edition for early testing of AR content is the going theory of what will happen at WWDC 2023.

You have a point but I wouldn't put anything pass Apple. You know what makes sense. I know what makes sense. But Apple doesn't always do what makes sense. So I have no idea.

SOME potential things done easier (or that can't be done at all otherwise) :
  • Virtual desktops for your Mac laptop. No need to lug 3x 6k displays around when you can have as many virtual displays as you like in 3d space.
  • 3d modelling with virtual 3d tools in a 3d workspace - rather than trying to represent 3d on a 2d display
  • working on something in the real world with instructions including full part labelling, etc. overlaid.

Yes, the first gen headset will be expensive
Yes it will be bulky
Yes it will be ugly

The tech is coming, but not quite here yet. But a dev platform is needed for developers to experiment with. Waiting for something perfectly fashionable like a set of AirPods whilst the rest of the industry develops and standardises the development platform without Apple's involvement would be the stupidest move they could possibly make. Especially when they literally have so much money in the bank they're looking for things to do with it.

Augmented reality WILL be the next big thing once it is ready (and eventually the tech will come down massively in size and weight) and without any sort of headset Apple is giving everyone who does have one out there a massive head start on that.

Is Virtual/Mixed Reality even ready as a mainstream marketable thing yet? I don’t know anyone who uses it. But I guess you gotta start somewhere. I’m just not sold on the idea yet. Seems very niche at best. Especially for $3,000! But what do I know? 🤷‍♂️

I can just imagine if they had social media back when computer mainframes were first put into production.

“It’s so big and ugly and isn’t even particularly fast, what problem does it solve? This is going to be a flop for sure”

They sure make a crapload of money for doing things that “make no sense”
