I don’t understand why this “virtual workspace” use case keeps coming up. Unless Apple has made some revolutionary advance that delivers photons to your eyes without using pixels, any such “virtual” workspace will be a fuzzy, blurry mess compared to a real workspace with actual monitors. Could Apple have made such a breakthrough? Maybe. If so, I would love to see it in action. If not, this headset is nothing more than an “also ran” product.
I’m highly skeptical that software engineers or designers or whoever are going to strap a headset to their face for a whole day to do their work. Even if Apple made something incredibly comfortable and lightweight you’d still get tired of having it on your face at some point. It’s never going to be like wearing a pair of reading glasses.

If video game companies can’t make this work, which is the most obvious application of a headset, then Apple’s ‘good enough’ approach certainly isn’t going to make it work.
the thing is that whatever this thing will do, it will likely be very polished/cool.

that will draw people in. they’re going to make it look really awesome and clean. it may not have a killer app or ton of features, but what it CAN do will be heavily marketed.

It's going to be a very niche product for a very select few people who may be able to put it to good use. Other people with more money than sense will also buy it just to own it, but I am sure buyers remorse will kick in eventually. Hopefully with its introduction other devices that are more useful to a broader range of folks will be born.

There will be some employee shuffling from this release though.

This feels like more of a "me too" product from Apple -- unless it can do something revolutionary that Sony, Meta or any other VR headset maker doesn't do.

And no, slapping an Apple logo on it doesn't automatically make it revolutionary.

Which video game company attempted mixed reality so far? I know I've seen virtual reality but did I miss a mixed reality headset?

Well to start with, this rumored headset isn't a VR headset. It is a Mixed Reality headset.

I don’t know why the Apple is rushing this. Look, the AR/VR market is kinda in the slumber right now, no one is gonna steal your lunch if you don’t release it asap, so you might as well take your time with this.

I think this NYT article has killed this project - if it wasn’t doomed already.

It sets a negative expectation that the product won’t be strong enough to break free from.

Either this gets shelved for at least another 12 months, or it comes out as planned and bombs.

Apple needs a powerful AI to generate on the fly anything in the FOV (people bodies/ environment/ behavior) until then it will be useless and quickly forgotten

A lot of random people seem to have seen Apple's internal documents with the posts they are making about this still not announced product. There's no way they are basing it off their imaginations, right?

How can any of us who haven’t seen it comment on it or agree or disagree with the sentiments in the article? Clearly some others at Apple are onboard with the launch. Wait till you see it then have an informed opinion.

MANY thought that the iPod will flop and that the iPhone will flop and were very wrong.

We know that the price will be high, so it’s not for everyone for sure. But for those of us who have not seen or tried it and its new applications, let’s reserve judgment.

Tell me what I would use it for ? What does it solve for me ? I know literally 3 people with headsets and they are 1,000,000% nerds - even Sony can’t decide about their headset and that’s just a grand all in….

I will be pleased if Apple prove me wrong…
It is possible it isn't for you. Doesn't mean it won't be useful for many others.

Also the Sony headset is VR. This is rumored to be mixed reality. Not the same thing.

I hate it with a passion even before it's released.

IMHO, they should have made low-range wireless glasses, but instead they went in the wrong direction.
By making it a wireless display with sensors, it could be affordable, and help sales of the next iPhone, which conveniently would be required for the ultra low-range wireless.

Apple's Intel moment.

You do know the pictures shown are renders and not official product images right? As are the details of what it does and the price. None of it is official or confirmed.

Apple has not announced it or revealed pics of it or anything.

We can’t tell you. Wait until it’s revealed.

The endgame / ultimate product here is normal-sized glasses that take the place of normal prescription glasses, but have AR features which augment the experience for the wearer.

This isn’t possible with today’s technology, but you don’t get from zero to end state by skipping the first step.

This'll be niche in the sense that a workstation is niche.

Apple is likely pushing this out to repair the image of XR after Meta's misstep. We know that light-weight AR is the place to be, but the tech simply isn't there yet. Until then, empowering top-tier creators to invent the future is fine by me.

Can’t say I blame them. I fail to see the point behind this. Complete waste of time and resources in my opinion. Resources better spent on, oh I don’t know, a more bug free expletive, or longer battery life? Ya know, stuff that matters a heck of a lot more than this rich person and annoying YouTube toy.
Agreed. This R&D could be spent on better battery tech. We haven't had a real breakthrough in this area in a while. Why not let this become a "hobby".

Forget that. They should just give us a Holodeck or upload us into a nanobot colony. Jeez, Apple, why aren't you doing physically impossible things using today's tech? /s

Seriously, your comment is asking for the impossible. Apple are not incompetent - you're just not understanding how technology works.

AR/VR is almost certainly going to be a major driver for battery tech breakthroughs because it is the main reason why we would ideally need battery breakthroughs. Necessity drives innovation.
