Some people are using it already. Not many due to cost, but for some industries the cost is inconsequential.

We've been using $5k (AUD) HoloLens units for remote support on some of our mines because:
  • downtime on machinery can be 10s of 100s of thousand dollars per hour
  • getting somebody to fly to site can be several days or even week(s)
  • the day rate for a tech to fly to site is about the cost of a HoloLens unit without any transport costs and in most cases you'd be paying for multiple days to get to/from site and do the work
If the unit can help fix ONE problem and prevent a tech visit to site in its lifetime, it has paid for itself several times over.
oh, I don’t doubt some industries are using the technology for sure. I was talking about a mass production item for the mainstream market of Apple users. I just don’t see a huge demand for it right now from your regular iPhone user. But again, what doI know? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe this thing will take off & become a hit with consumers.

Forget that. They should just give us a Holodeck or upload us into a nanobot colony. Jeez, Apple, why aren't you doing physically impossible things using today's tech? /s

Seriously, your comment is asking for the impossible. Apple are not incompetent - you're just not understanding how technology works.

Why? It's a battery thing I guess, but it seems to me this much simple approach will be the ways thing go.

Who knows. And, I sort of do understand tech (hardware). I won't go into details LOL.

But you may be right. It's just frustrating not being able to own this. Ya know.

Will girls will be more impressed with the bulky, geeky eyewear, or with the fanny pack battery?

This has the feel of when they came up with the iPhone, but only if the first iPhone had been a white, “me too” blackberry.

Battery, heat dissipation, field of view, optical distortions, transparency, tracking quality - these are all areas that need years of development before an iPhone-tethered AR glasses device is possible.

The reason why they are going with a headset is because glasses are just not physically possible today.

I have no idea what I would do with a headset like that at $500. At $3000 I am thinking nobody would buy it. Meta sells there’s for $400 and I have no need for it.

What I am seeing with this so far makes Google Glass look awesome and that thing was mocked by everybody.

I know for myself, I get headaches from Vr headsets i tried in the past. So i know its not for me. I think, they should have focused on something like a google glasses, something smaller, wearable for most of the public than a giant headset that you only can use at home/work etc. Also, most identify vr headsets for gamers at this point. Any engineers, architects or even doctors using VR headsets? not yet and its such a niche product from apple to be releasing with all that is happening with layoffs in the tech world. Of course the marketing on this thing will make it look like we all need it - but we do not. DOA but cool to look at.

I got a nasty headache after using Oculus VR for 15 mins. So I kinda dread to use any VR again. Phobia is a real barrier for me.

Clearly you're not the target demographic.

There are uses for this tech even today, and once the price comes down and technology advances, eventually it will replace your phone. That's a long way off, but without taking the intermediate steps we will never get there.

The 3k bulky headset with tethered battery is NOT the end goal. It's a step. To create things that can't currently be created.

This continues to smell bad…

Something needs to kick Apple down a few notches to teach the corporate culture and leadership some humility. If this product is an embarrassing mess, maybe that’s a good thing. They’re wasting resources on this and a car, when their main products are suffocating under software bugs and are released in a state of essentially incomplete development.

This whole industry stinks. It needs a massive burn off of arrogance & presumptuousness, and a massive injection of accountability and responsibility.

Some Apple employees are concerned about the usefulness and price point of the company's upcoming mixed-reality headset, The New York Times reports.

Apple headset concept by David Lewis and Marcus Kane

Initial enthusiasm around the device at the company has apparently become skepticism, according to eight current and former Apple employees speaking to The New York Times. The change of tone reportedly marks an unprecedented level of concern about a new Apple product inside the company, in stark contrast to previous product launches that were pursued with single-mindedness and enthusiasm.

The first-generation headset is purportedly seen as a bridge to future products that require technological breakthroughs, but many employees are said to have worries about the device's $3,000 price point, utility, and unproven market. Skeptics have questioned if the device is "a solution in search of a problem," unlike the iPod and iPhone. The headset has apparently not been "driven by the same clarity" as Apple's other products.

Some Apple employees have defected from the project due to doubts about its potential, while others have been fired over lack of progress with some of the device's functionality, including Siri. The discontent is said to extend to members of Apple's leadership, some of whom have questioned the device's prospects.

The headset was apparently presented to many of Apple's top 100 executives via a video at a corporate retreat five years ago made by design chief Jony Ive. The video depicted a man in a London taxi wearing an augmented reality headset calling his wife in San Francisco, sharing the sights of London through the husband's eyes.

The New York Times reaffirmed previous reports that the headset will feature a carbon fiber frame, a hip-mounted battery, outward-facing cameras, two 4K displays, prescription lenses for wearers of glasses, and a "reality dial" to increase or decrease real-time video pass-through from the surrounding environment.

Apple has focused on ensuring that the device excels at videoconferencing and time spent as virtual avatars, calling the headset's main application "copresence." There will also be custom high-resolution TV content from Hollywood filmmakers including Jon Favreau. Despite similarities with Meta's headsets and the "metaverse," Apple is expected to pitch the device as something that differs from existing offerings.

The device will also offer tools for artists, designers, and engineers, enabling drawing and image editing in 3D space. There will also be applications for editing virtual reality video using hand gestures. As a result, it is expected to appeal to businesses and design companies more than ordinary consumers. Some employees have allegedly speculated that Apple could again delay the headset's launch, even though manufacturing is now underway for an unveiling in June.

Ah yes because a cellular phone and a VR headset are even close to being the same.... Apple loves customers like you...
2006 Premium1: Ah yes because a mp3 player and cellular phone are even close to being the same.... Apple loves customers like you...

glad the world is not full of visionless drones like you, or we will still be stuck using cassettes and flip phones.

regardless if version 1 is a flop or not, it will lay the foundation for future iterations and mass vr adoption. As a long time vr user myself, stuck with current shtty meta hardware/software offerings, i am still amazed at the things vr can achieve, it is mind blowing. I am certain apple will blow it up in ways you naysayers will never imagined in the next 3-5 years.

Not sure if anyone remembered first iPhone, it was pretty shtty too, and the crazy amount of negativity over lack of physical keyboard. But it laid the foundation for future generations, by iPhone 3gs onward, it was a usable phone that exceeded other offerings by a wide margin.

It’s just a great concept! That’s probably where it’s going to end. Waste of R&D money, time, and talent.

As loyal Apple customers, we are very concerned too. $3,000 Apple Product and it will be half-baked, unfortunately. 😂
Here here!

I would’ve rathered Apple to release a sweet 5.8” (outer LTP display at 120hz), and innner screen at 7.1” - very akin to the Oppo Find N2!

Then keep this at glasses funny secret and release only until fully ready and worked out all the UI and considerable battery life and charging issues and warranty specifics prior to launch. Do not rush prototypes to market.

The fact Tim Cook is rumores to be pressuring release (if true, again just rubies being reported) - means he thinks Apple is in trouble or lagging in this race. Evidently they are.

Will they surprise us as Suzuka who knows but if the camera bump cannot be eradicated or seignificantly reduced like what Samsung was able to do for. The Galaxy 22 to the 23 line in just one generation, along with ZTE’s Nubia 8 Pro phones or Sony’s Xperia 1 II/III/IV have been able to maintain just a slight 3-4mm bump shows something is very wrong.

Apple still does not have a periscope camera with variable optical zoom.
we’re not in the era of real useable foldable or flip phones that really have great use cases, but we don’t have anything from Apple.

I'm not sure I've ever read an article that sounded more made up than that NYT article. My favorite part is that they put in that it might be delayed... lol. Why don't more people question whether the thing exists at all?
