I definitely get better speeds. I was getting 2-3Mbps at home and now I am between 4-6.

I was just outside downtown at the UT-SA downtown campus and pulled down a whopping 7.97Mbps or something, but it was mostly at 8.4, then hiccuped at the end. Definitely a nice little speed improvement.

Ok, so AT&T is faster in the tests.

Then why in real world use does Verizon load web pages faster than AT&T often? Is it because AT&T is just prone to packet loss, and has a slower back end?

BTW the above is a question, not a statement...

Verizon compresses the images and videos on web pages. On Verizon when you request a page it goes to Verizon's servers, they request the page, compress the images/videos and then send it to your phone. So say that you request a page with 4MB of pictures and Verizon is able to compress that down to 0.5MB. Then unless AT&T is more then 8 times faster then Verizon, Verizon will seem faster.

Personally, I don't like Verizon's approach. I don't like the idea of a man-in-the-middle altering a page's content.

Just adding my results. No noticeable speed difference from 4 to 4S. Still 1-2 down, 1 up. Same on both devices. I have used the coverage maps and tried in multiple locations in South Denver. Same everywhere, we are definitely in HSPA+ zone.

I am starting to wonder if AT&T is not properly switching people to HSPA+ data plans even though mine does specifically say "Data Unlimited for iPhone4S". Is there any way to know for sure you are on an HSPA+ connection?

Very interesting, I didn't realize verizon did that...

The speed increase is nice, but not at the expense of battery life. :/

iPhone 4S users are now experiencing the reality of what it takes to run on a high speed network. Long time bashers of Android phones running at the higher speeds, Apple is now in that group of capable devices. Everything has it's price and is a compromise.

Welcome to reality boys & girls. This is _one_ reality Apple can't be delusional about, or draw into their smoke & mirrors presentations.

Just relax and enjoy, higher speeds have their benefits. My wife's new 4S is as fast as my Galaxy II, that's to be celebrated. Especially now that Antennagate is behind us. This new 4S FINALLY has a good phone.

As a huge Apple AND Android user, I like them equally.

They each have their strenghts & weaknesses and both are excellent phones.

Hovering around the 1.15 / 1.20 mark here in Cincinnati, OH.

Disappointing to see so many other people posting great speeds and I'm getting garbage.

was in NYC for the weekend, and on Sunday morning in the Upper West Side I got 8.3 down, 1.44 up, I didn't expect that at all

Eh, some yes but most whom I know in DC, Atlanta, and New Orleans are all seeing the same speeds.

We all thought it would improve but frankly, it seems more stable but that is it

Anyone in KC here? I'm still getting about 1-1.5 mbps, about the same as with my 4. Has anyone seen significantly faster numbers in the Kansas City area?

I've seen 35/10 with LTE. It is definitely getting close.

Just think, in another 10 years we will look at our broadband speeds today like we look at dialup today. Makes me want to pull an Eric Cartman from when he had to wait for the wii :D

Here is a test I took last night with my 4S (Lawrence, KS):

I was already getting 4.5-5 with my 4, so this isn't a huge upgrade.

And we will be able to use those fast speeds for 5 whole minutes before we run into our caps in 10 years!

LOCATION. None of my Verizon friends can load pages anywhere close to as fast as I can, where I live (Tampa).

I am getting 2-5 down, with the 4S

That would be a huge increase for me! I can't believe Lawrence is seeing the higher speeds but KC isn't. Should have stayed there when I graduated!

I've noticed that too when I've been in Overland Park, lol. Maybe AT&T loves the college kids more.

St. Louis, checking in!

iPhone 3GS: 1.1 Mbps down, 1.1 Mbps up.
iPhone 4S: 1.1 Mbps down, 1.1 Mbps up.

This is with 5/5 bars of signal.
Outside.
On a clear day.
Standing next to an AT&T tower. :(

AT&T hates St. Louis. I can see the Arch by my house, but AT&T thinks that is too far to bring U-Verse or even DSL (I'm stuck with Charter). Besides not providing wired services, it seems they throttle us down to around 1 Mbps wirelessly as well.

Edit: When I visited Chicago this past summer, my 3GS was flying on their connection. I was near O'Hare airport with just 1-2 bars of signal, and still getting 2+ Mbps download speeds.

I never really thought to check, but your right. I live across the river near glen carbon and get nearly the same speeds; 1.29 down, and 1.35 up. (iPhone 4) Sadly, Verizon and Sprint aren't any better here.

I speed tested my iPhone 4 vs my iPhone 4s both with the same number. I tested the iPhone 4 first and then activated the 4s.

iPhone 4 - 1.17 Mbps Down.
iPhone 4s - 4.65 Mbps Down.

Both in the same room in Peoria AZ.
