PLEASE stop quoting this video.. look at the 2-3 bars signal on the AT&T phone in this test. Please.. you're gonna compare that to a Verizon and Sprint iPhone 4S getting 4-5 bars? Sure, all areas are going to differ depending which network you are on, but to post that video with 2 bars on one of the phones and claim the network is slower overall is pathetic. Even with the lower signal, the AT&T iPhone 4S loads youtube videos and some tests faster. Ha.

Verizion & Sprint = Slow

I'm pretty sure you can. Right now, I'm sitting with my VZW phone (4S) with 5 bars next to an AT&T phone (3GS) with two bars. I have never been with anyone holding an AT&T phone that has more bars than I do at any given moment. I'm not saying this is indicative of the entire country, but still... I've seen this in many cities/states.

When I got this phone, I wanted to do a comparison with my friend's 4 on AT&T. His test came back with 3.86 down, but my phone still loads pages faster. We also tested out Fandango, and I was looking at movie times while he was still staring at a blank screen. It's not scientific by any means, but I'l take my real world performance over the hit-or-miss AT&T service.

Also, it seems odd how everyone's latency on here is so high. Mine is almost always below 100ms. Granted, my d/l speeds are never higher than 2 Mbps.

On a good day I get ~1mbps down and ~500k up on campus here with 3G. Absolutely abismal. ATT has good speed but they just don't have capacity. When all the students leave I can easily get ~3mbps down over 3G.

I just got .83 mbps down and 1mbps up.

Holtsville, NY reporting in. I'm using AT&T, getting 9.05 Mbps down and 1.57 Mbps up. Not bad considering its the middle of the day. On my 3GS I would be lucky to get 1.5 Mbps down and lets not even talk about upload.

"Still, AT&T's present network is capable of much faster speeds than both Sprint's and Verizon's."

OP should add "only when using an iPhone 4S".

If it's not on the iPhone, then it doesn't matter. Faster speeds on other networks are only relevant if the iPhone can connect to it

----------

I'm not getting very spectacular improvements. From 1mbps on AT&T with my 4 to 3mbps now on my 4S.

that's sarcasm right? Was that supposed to be an understatement?

Faaaaast!

With 4 bars today in D.C., I was at 8.09 Mbps and upload of 1.72. Last night with 3 bars in Md. I was at 4.63 with an upload of 1.52!!! My 3GS didn't even come close to that.:D That is all on AT&T. My WiFi is allowing up to 23.58Mbps. My iPad 2 hasn't even been that fast.

Meanwhile, I'm getting 0.01 to 0.03 Mbps on Sprint. And that's with four bars. The 0.03 was the remarkable exception. What. The. F???

How exactly can you compare two different people, from two different areas, connecting to two different servers and say there is an improvement? I could show you the same exact phone connecting to two different servers and one is faster.

4S data speeds

I ranged between 1-2mbps on the iphone 4 (i used the speedtest.net app a lot and have a full log of tests)....

since getting the iPhone 4S a few days ago, I see .5 to 3mbps... so yes it KIND OF went up...but it also dips WAY lower. On release day i got up to 3mbps a few times, but the past 2 days i can't break .8mbps

I have been a huge iPhone/Apple fan and this is my 4th new model iPhone and this is the first time I severely regret it. I probably won't ever preorder an iPhone again because the it's just too much money to risk when the 4 was great.

ISSUES:
Data speeds are garbage, camera doesn't seem that much better, apps etc don't run faster, SIRI rarely can connect to the network to answer a Q, the battery drains FAST, battery gets very hot even when charging, charging takes much longer.

I was at a football game... outdoors in Chicago and had 4 bars and 3G data connection but couldn't do ANYTHING on my phone. Because of this, I shut off wifi, bluetooth, location services, background apps etc etc and let the phone sit in my pocket (except for about 10 total minutes of texting attempts and 1 picture of the field) and I lost 43% battery from when I left my car to walk into the stadium and from when I walked back to the car (about 4 hours or so).... WTF!?! Then I plugged it in and thought it was gonna set my car seat on fire and after a 45 minute drive home, it only got from 57% to 72% charged.

Guess they can't all be winners, and for that, I won't gamble anymore... as much as it will kill me to not have the new iPhone on preorder when it's announced.

Just did the test again on WiFi and got 30.78Mbps and 9.26 up. I never went over 10Mbps with the 3GS.

Of course it matters. The post can sound deceiving to average readers and trick them into thinking that AT&T's HSPA+ is the fastest network there is.
By simply adding "when used an iPhone 4S" solves that issue.

About 3 down and 1.1 up right now (eastern PA & iPhone 4S)... but when done at 1AM it was 8 down and 1.6 up; not sure what my iPhone 4 used to get.... but if 7.2 was the alleged max... and 8>7.2, i'd say this is a good thing. Finally something to brag about for at&t (my friends all have the verizon iPhone) other than simultaneous voice/data

I'm just still waiting to get an AT&T 4S from Best Buy at all.

:massive sarcasm: "GEE, I'M SO GLAD I PRE-ORDERED!!"

:(

Pre-order should mean "guaranteed phone on launch day".

Not near Chinatown in NYC. Speeds are just as slow as they were before with the iPhone 4 where it averages from 10kbps to 200kbps.

Agreed about Manhattan. I ordered a 64 GB and switched to Verizon. My Verizon MiFi always had faster data speeds than my AT&T iPhone 3GS -- and no latency either, which is just as important.

I got 9 frickin Mbps INSIDE my apartment! That's three Mbps faster than my uverse wifi! This is in Cleveland, btw.

I got 6Mbps in downtown Indianapolis last night and my two friends with the old "4"s couldn't break 2. It's not only faster, but the reception seems a bit improved over the 4 ... and hugely over the 3GS (for example ... I would be lucky to get 1 bar of E at work with the 3GS, often "no service," and now see 2-3 bars of 3G with 1.5+Mbps on my 4S).

I've been extremely happy with it.
