iMessage had been working perfectly for the past 4 months..until just now when it's not working at all. Tried turning off and reactivating and it appears to be activated but never turns blue. I'm on Vodafone in the uk..

I switched iMessage off ages ago... the delay in receiving messages ranged from a few minutes to a couple of days..

SMS works immediately, every time. And I get unlimited SMS with my O2 contract.

This was bothering me today.

I'll take the blame for it, folks. I shouldn't have sent 5 iMessages this morning: it's all my fault :(

Retardz

Some of you ******** make me laugh.
Personally I basically only have a PAYG sim in my phone so people can call me...so iMessage is all I have. No I am castrated. And have been for 3 hours. I'd like my ***** back immediately. Failing that an explanation would do as an intermediary. I bought my phone for these features and if they don't work I'm f*cked. Not happy.
Btw the 'thin & light' comment also made me rofl.

A workaround to get iMessage working again...

Go to 'Settings' > 'Messages'

Turn iMessage off, then on (will require you to enter your Apple ID password).

It took mine a few moments to get activated, but it resolved the problem for me.

USMC Guy

Worked like a charm. Thanks!

Heh. This is why BBM still eats Apple's lunch when it comes to messages. Of course, if Blackberry mail went down for two days and BBM went offline for a fraction of the time iMessage has been out, everyone would be tisk-tisking about how RIM is going down and look how far they've fallen and the stock tanks and people jump ship. Shows how fickle users can be.

More interesting though is it shows that iCloud is still suffering some serious growing pains. If Apple wants to play with the big boys, they simply cannot have this happen the way it's been happening.

Wow, you americans are getting ripped off!

I get 5000 texts a month included in my £15 a month package.

i'm from Germany ;) i chose a scheiß plan on purpose so i could get the 4S for free and bc i never actually text anymore thx to WhatsApp, FB msg & iMsg

Are people noticing a difference between iMessage on WiFi vs over cell networks? As I posted earlier I haven't missed a beat this morning but I am using WiFi.

How come Skype has always worked under even the most adverse setups, whereas :apple: has never managed to build a robust solution? —Since the iChat days even.

And Canada is even worse. It's why I have an iPod Touch rather than an iPhone along with the cheapest, bottom end pay as you go, no frills phone. It's just not worth dealing with the companies. Last year I read that, unlike most other G20 countries, in Canada there is a significant percentage moving back to landlines from cell. Can't confirm it right now but I wouldn't be surprised.

Some people have iPod touch - so SMS not an option.
Some people have iPad - so SMS not an option.

iMessage easily one of the best things Apple ever did.

if you go into messaging settings, then turn off send as sms. then it wont send if imessage isn't working and you wont get charged.

I don't know how to say this, so I'll just come out and say it. I love you.

I can't believe I overlooked that ... it's so obvious :(

Thank you again. So. Much. :D

just started happening on my mac. it wont even find my recipient and simply shows "red" as if they dont have iMSG

iMessage seems to be working fine for me now, just sent a message and it delivered almost instantly - maybe I got lucky!

It's not a complete outage. You'll see it work 90% of the time.. It's that 10% that's random and annoying.

I'm hoping 10.8.2 and iOS 6 smooth things out.
