Got my 14 pro last Friday night. And since I noticed the battery is draining really fast and it’s constantly getting really hot really fast.
But today (3 days after) it seems it’s all calmed down like a lot of the guys posted here. It seems the battery is doing well and the overheating is not there any more
Yep all the indexing is done, app downloading/updating, files downloading ect takes about 24 hours and all that goes away and now my 14 ProMax is doing amazing, especially in battery life and my 13 ProMax was pretty good

Turn off all things under Siri (Before Searching, Content from Apple, Suggestions from Apple). Also check your Analytics and Privacy Reports (they tend to "reset" and turn them back on after a major update I noticed), turn off all Background App Refreshes (just leave it "On" on the top, but uncheck everything, it will still come in just fine); Remove notifications for Apple things that you don't use (like Screen Time, App Store, I turn them off); Under Location Services, check that all of them are "While Using" or "Never", and not "All the time", and try not to use Precise Location; Under System Services, turn off "Product Improvement". Under "Privacy and Security", turn off "Research Sensor & Sensor Data" if you don't use. Under "App Store", don't use Automatic Downloads. Turn off "Exposure Notifications" under Settings. Turn off "Tracking" under "Privacy and Security" too.

These are some of the things I did and battery life holds out pretty good.
Tried this but now Siri is not suggesting the apps I use more often

How can I keep suggestions enabled but stop siri from searching inside those apps?

do you have AOD on of off? have you changed any settings to achieve this battery life? did you set it up as new or transferred backup from the 13?

AOD is on, looking a battery says 5 percent use at night when plugged in
No settings changes to achieve just my normal use
Transfered from backup via Quick Start. And the line/history of backups goes back at least to before the X I have not done a fresh start for years hate all the getting back to the way I set things, and passwords and such LOL

If I do a really busy day no work on macbook, or ipad and am away Take lots of photos, mac site browzing/posting, facebook work ect I can get this down as low as maybe 70 percent (was similar then on 13 ProMax). On less busy days on phone (what is more normal for days ) I got maybe 80-85 percent at end of day on 13 ProMax. So far the 14 is doing better on my normal — less busy iphone use days when I am home enough to use ipad and such for much of my internet work. So that might also explain to you how I am getting this number on these typical days of lower iphone use during day.

iPhone 13 ProMax — 80-85 percent
iPhone 14 ProMax — 90-95 percent

Hope that explained my numbers a bit. I have not over years of my iphone iUP programs had the problems most folks get. I am not sure if it is just some third party app conflicts, different use styles or settings for folks with problems. If you have other questions about my use and getting this feel free to ask.

You are one of the lucky ones. I set the phone up as new and dowloaded just a couple of apps and still is draining really fast, aprox 1%/ 5 min just idle, not even using the phone which to me is a lot .

So how long have had the phone now since that setup?

I had horrible drain during that 24 hour after transfer period when the phone is indexing all the 250 GB of stuff, reinstalling my apps from apple and other background work. That first few hours I had to move off the MagSafe puck it was getting hot and my puck/phone would stop charging because of heat. I put on lightning charger and at least it stayed steady but stuck at about 74 percent until a few hours of all this. After 24 hours I was getting this good resullt both with active iphone use all day and lesser use (more of my days as I sit at home a lot and do my internet work mostly on the big 12.9 IPad Pro screen)

I am also curious can you do a screen dump of your battery use last 24 hours and 10 days? Sometimes I can see an offending app — may be me using it a lot previous day, or like Facebook for some excessive background work (I have background refresh off and that horrible app that I also need to use LOL). I use that battery settings look both 10 days and 24 hours and percent use vs activity use lots of stats to study. Years back I remember Facebook was nasty and turning off the background activities on it really helped me but thats a standard feature now.

I also had a thought just now LOL. I have my iphone in a holster that closes and its dark. Wonder if when in there it’s like the phone facedown that turns off when that way? I might not be using alway on that much even though turned on. Just a wild thought. I am assuming from what you say that you have AOD off?

I have had it for almost a week already and no change . I can actually see the battery just going down while i am typing this. I just can't understand such a horrible battery life compared to the 13 pro max, this is really frustrating to say the least. I understand at the beginning with all the indexes and photos but this is not getting any better

Dang that is strange, I wonder how many are having this issue? It seems more widespread than I am guessing.

What does your battery usage show in settings? Are there apps working in background or running all the time even when you are not doing anything?

just twitter ( no background) and whatsapp backgroud activity. the most impact is AOD

I wonder is your phone a Pro or ProMax? I noticed in articles and comments in threads a possible trend in that my ProMax has a hulking big battery and that folks with just Pro’s which are doing tons of stuff with all the new camera tech and other features (AOD ect) have a significantly smaller battery. Wonder with that what the percentage use on a battery of pro sitting there vs ProMax, with AOD on vs Off, lots of use vs low use day? Thoughts whirling through my head but I do not have statistics to prove them. Someone should make a poll about battery problems and drain, Pro vs ProMax, when phone made (first group vs next couple waves), and finally list of apps using most power including of course AOD. Not sure how to do such a poll.

Interesting well I hate and do not use twitter or WhatsApp. Just plain ole evil Fakebook LOL here.

What happens to your 1 percent drain every 5 minutes if AOD is off?

finally as I asked in longer message is yours a Pro or ProMax?

No issues for me - iPhone 14 pro max.

I had my first issue yesterday with my 14 Pro Max 256 GB. The phone just randomly shut off while it was at 87% battery. Had to force restart it to get it back up and running. My Dad's 14 Pro Max has had this issue twice already.

(Work in QA myself and agree that these bugs are rampant within iOS 16.0, a mix of low and high-priority issues for this release)

How long did you and your dad have new phones before these issues appeared (just curious if this is just after the install and while the phone is busy for a day or few days later). I have not seen this at all on my 14 ProMax 1 TB.

I always have problems setting up polls here but wonder about a number of issues.

1) Battery drain is it worse on the smaller 14 Pro battery, from some discussions it makes me wonder…. Other issues have not seen or experienced since I got mine on 16th of September.

2) Even CarPlay is fine in 16.01 and 16.02 for me on my Mazda 6, but mine is a wired aftermarket add by dealer (my car is 2016 so CarPlay took a couple years to be available). So is issue with wired CarPlay or bluetooth CarPlay? Lots of questions

Ok one variable eliminated. Forget that idea ;-)

Is AOD on or off?
I realized this morning (mine is on) that my phone is in a holster so it is dark like if you put phone face down. Which I read turns of the AOD automatically when that is done. Wonder if on my phone it is off in holster? Ah was able to peak open holster it turns back on to AOD, close it and after a few seconds if no light leaks in too much it turns off. So my AOD is off most of using day in my holster. Wonder how that effects things will have to see what it does sitting out off charger. Looking at battery use it does say while it is charged that AOD over night (10 PM to 7AM approximately) uses 5% of battery.

if you put in a holster, upside down or even in your pocket the AOD will shut off , that is why your battery will not get consumed at the same rate than people that leave the phone on their desk facing up.

Yep after I wrote I tested it and its off (never looked before or even thought about it LOL). So this makes me wonder if main culprit is A0D? Been in holster 80 percent of time since I got up 3.5 hours ago. Looked still reads 100%. I should leave it out and see what my percent drain is on my ProMax

That sounds like a runaway process using excess power. Which 16 version are you using? When was the last time you rebooted your phone?

I don't think is just AOD. Many people with previous generations iphones including the 13 series are experiencing the same draining issue, IOS 16 for me is causing all these issues. I even exprienced this with the 13 pro max I had, after i installed IOS 16 in the 13 pro max the battery took a big hit

running the beta 16.1 now before it was the 16.0.2 no difference between the 2 . I power cycle the phone at least once a week

Hmmm, ok I wondered. I saw no hit for the week I had it on my 13 ProMax either while I waited fo my 14 ProMax.

I saw some interesting things on 9to5mac, one was a comment about battery drain maybe caused by third party apps not yet updated to work efficiently on 16.. I use mainly apple apps, and a few third party like facebook and messenger. I do my Instagram mostly on my safari browser rather than app 90 percent of time but have not used it much in past week and half since 14 ProMax arrived.

Another thing on this thread (below FYI) was the exposure notification app that health departments can use to notify and check exposure mine is off forgot it was even there LOL but several have said this is a big drain on their phones. Not a concern of mine as I don‘t use I think its off by default from apple but not sure. I have mostly moved on from pandemic worries personally (and vaccinated and boosted as a 72 year old ;-) )

Anyway look at this link there are tons of comments on battery issues on new and old phones for some and none for others (my experience and i cannot explain to you why for sure)

I am not having this problem but I have seen it mentioned how do you find a runaway process will it show in battery usage info or is it unseen in background. I always kill my apps periodically on screen so they are not running in background in anyway. And when iOS gets weird with errors then time for a reboot of phone. I seem to avoid most problems at least in my experience.
