Calm down. iOS 12 is probably their best base launch of the OS in years. It’s not like anyone could have tested it on a iPhone XS/Max. Little things happen.

"...The advantage is a simpler and more resilient plug with a general cable designed to support a serial protocol plus power. The cable is terminated by intelligent modules controlling the cable impedance and actual protocol. The modules on the cable end are specific purpose such as serial, USB, audio, or other multi protocol. The module on the iPhone side is programmable via a firmware subsystem that can be updated with the OS. Since the modules are proprietary..."

This is the technological difference between the Lightning and USB cables (other than the obvious: the first being proprietary and the second an industry standard)
  1. Lightning has intelligence built at the cable ends. USB does not. This relocates interface hardware to the cable, away from the iPhone.
  2. The programmable module at iPhone-facing side implements protocol transcoding as well as power delivery negotiation and auto-configuration.
  3. iPhone firmware is used for module programming, thus the interface is [somewhat] future-proof.
Apple should make this explanation public.

i suspect most users' iphones turn on before they're able to plug in the device due to the raise to wake. not terribly a big issue.

Haven’t experienced it on my Xs Max, but have experienced it on my iPad Pro from last year... interestingly, when try to charge with USB-C to Lightning only. Haven’t had it with USB-A to Lightning.

Smh... and I payed extra for the 256gb. And I thought I was crazy when my battery had less of a charge then it should of had with the iPad charger.

Maybe... I should have bought the Note 9 but I’m sure the patch next week will fix everything

Guys relax...

It’s the most natural thing in the world for new software & hardware to have a few minor issues. No matter how much testing you do, you’re always gonna miss a few things. Of course Apple could not be an exception to that rule.

With all due respect being able to charge your phone is basically in the top 3 features of a phone. This is embarrassing that it could be missed. I'm sure if software can fix it it will be fixed quickly but this isn't some obscure bug.

Between this and the weird smoothing of the front camera, this just seems like they half-assed things.

And connection issues with wifi and cellular.

But farewelwilliams, you forget:
Auto-backup onto iCloud only takes place, when iPhone/iPad is:
  1. screen-locked
  2. connected to WiFi
  3. powered
Hence, this bug, when present, will then negate auto-backup, every time (Why? Because, as reported, the device is unable to power-on unless the screen is unlocked.)

Regardless where you lie on the Apple-fest side, you have to acknowledge that this reported behavior is far from premium.

if you do not like his videos than do not watch them
I don’t. Stopped watching his stuff a loooong time ago. Didn’t watch this one either.

Seems Apple users really are the whiniest bunch of people.
Nah, it’s you actually. I’m not the one who wrote multiple paragraphs complaining about someone making an opinion on a video.

Well, guess what, we have 4 Mac's in our house (MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, 2 iMacs), and ZERO USB-C ports. So what would I do with your proposed cable?????

A couple of suggestions!
Keep the cable for when you upgrade your computers.
Or give the cable to somebody you know who does have a USB-C mac.

I do think it's early on in the transition and while I think it would be nice if the iphones came with a Lightning to USB-C cable I can understand why Apple haven't done it yet. BUT in 5 years time I'd say the majority of Mac users will be on a machine with USB-C. By then I'm sure iphones will come with a USB-C cable.

I'll be upgrading my computers next year so I guess I'll have to fork over the 20 bucks... or you can send me yours!

-------------------

Do the new phones still vibrate and turn on for a moment when you plug them to indicate that charging has started??? My 6S+ does that. It's actually quite useful.

Not defending Apple on this but Lewis has to be the most obnoxious tech pretender on YouTube. His facts are rarely close to being accurate. He represents the ultimate evolution of click bait. The fact that he has so many subscribers amplifies the uninformed ultra short attention span of most humans today. His channel promotes the grimey underbelly of miss information regardless of the product involved. :apple:
Yup. Agree completely. Apple needs to make things right, but I can’t stand YouTube personalities like Unbox Therapy. He’s the Logan Paul of tech videos.

my new iPhone XS max also has the issue... My version is the one that seems to charge when the phone wakes up... I had first assumed it was cause I might have been using a 3rd party cable or the larger iPad charging brick but nope - seems to be with the included XS Max Apple charger and cable too...

On the plus side, I bet Apple will call this a feature and make it part of their "green" initiative... At the next keynote Phil Shiller will walk on stage and tell the audience that collectively the new iPhone XS max has used less electricity than any other iPhone ever released!

Be lucky you don't have an Android phone. You'd have to visit XDA to find out a fix. Apple will probably patch this next week.

Name one Android flagship phone that has this 'bug'. Just one.
And it doesn't have to cost 1000-1500$, it can be even Xiaomi Pocaphone, a 'flagship' phone that cost about 300$.

Like many on this forum, I love(d) apple products.
But this kind of fanboyism is simplu ludricus.

I don't plant to purchase Xs or Xs Max, but if I've purchased one (cheapest one in my country is around 1500 euros), I would go nuts if it had this problem.

So please, grow up and stop being such a fanboy. If apple does something wrong, it's ok to criticize them.

These kind of fails seduce the Apple consumer so much they will likely buy another one. Brilliant marketing as usual from the fruit.

If a person has not charged the phone in over 24 hours, they have bigger problems than "autobackups". Regardless, you misunderstood my point.

Because they are emotionally attached to Apple.
The most accurate post ever on these forums. Never seen a company with so many people emotionally attached to them in my life. Its like Apple is a religion they follow. Its ok to point out an issue with a product that costs over 1000 bucks people!!! Apple have been making a habit of releasing half baked products lately because they can get away with it.

I've had a XS Max since original release day and haven't experienced the issue. I just plug in to a 5W wall charger when I go to bed and it's charged in the morning. :shrugs shoulders: No doubt it is happening, but who knows how many people are effected by it.

Someone please invite this guy to the next Apple event so he can shut up.

Unbox Therapy's cringy thumbnails are eye cancer. Dude's so desperate to repeat the views for bendgate.

Will be patched very soon I'm sure. This dude won't shut up! And as usual, the fandroids will flood to the comments to bitch about a phone they don't even have.

Definitely seems like a software issue. UnboxTherapy is an abrasive channel though.

But is he wrong?

I’m no fan of his channel. I often find his anti-Apple bias to be quite annoying, and his fan base is even worse, but come on... you gotta call a spade a spade. The issue is so widespread that even MacRumors is reporting it.

A number of iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max owners in the Apple Support Communities and MacRumors Forums report that the devices fail to start charging when a Lightning cable is plugged in while the screen is turned off.

iphone-xs-lightning.jpg

As with many crowdsourced issues, experiences vary. In most cases, the iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max begins charging once the user wakes the device by tapping or raising the screen. However, some users report having to both wake the iPhone and disconnect and reconnect the Lightning cable to get a charge.

In rarer cases, the iPhone stops responding entirely at some point after a Lightning cable is plugged in while the screen is turned off.

Lewis Hilsenteger demonstrated the issue on his popular YouTube channel Unbox Therapy today by plugging a Lightning cable into one iPhone X, four iPhone XS, and four iPhone XS Max units. While the iPhone X began to charge, it appears two of the iPhone XS units and three of the iPhone XS Max units did not.

Unbox Therapy's video uses the hashtag #ChargeGate

Affected customers have documented the issue in at least a dozen discussion threads across the web, including the Apple Support Communities, MacRumors Forums, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and other forums and platforms. It's unclear how widespread the issue is at this time, but not everyone is affected.

Some users have speculated the issue could be related to USB Restricted Mode, introduced in iOS 11.4.1, which prevents an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from communicating with USB accessories via the Lightning connector if one hour or longer has passed since the device was last unlocked.

However, while USB Restricted Mode is enabled by default in iOS 12, Hilsenteger and others say disabling the feature does not help. Apple also has a support document that ensures "your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch charges as usual when it's connected to a USB power adapter" with the feature toggled on.

In the YouTube comments on the Unbox Therapy video, some users claim to be experiencing the same issue on older iPhones and iPads, so there is a decent chance this is a software issue that could be addressed in a future iOS 12 update. In the meantime, there does not appear to be a workaround.

If you are affected by this issue, we recommend contacting Apple Support. Apple frequently passes on device information and diagnostics to its engineering teams to address potential bugs like these, so all feedback helps.

Apple did not respond to multiple requests for comment, but we'll update this article if we receive any information.

[doublepost=1538270144][/doublepost]I had this happen to my X last year and could only charge it on my wireless charger. It was on the beta version so I just waited it out and it sorted itself after a later update. So it’s not limited to the xs, I’m positive there are xs’w with the same problem out there. Just glad I’m not one of them

For sure it’s an issue and a bug, but it’s not a “serious problem” as mr. click bait Apple won’t invite me to their events or send me demo products says...
How is a phone not charging properly not considered a “serious problem” to you? You do know you can’t use a phone if it’s not charged, right...?

This problem is being reported by quite a few people. People don’t to be apologists this time. It’s okay to acknowledge a fault by Apple.

He is doing a service to Apple users, just think of the publicity, this issue will be brought to Apples attention quicker and the fix will come out quick smart.

Yes, not being able to charge the phone is just a teeny weeny problem. If I have understood it, some people have reported that even when it says it charging, a little later it stops charging, so they are in a position that they never quite know if the device is charging.
