Oddly enough, I had this exact problem last night and I DIDN'T upgrade to X.11.4 yet. When I went to my account, it asked for my login, so I typed in my usual U_N@mac.com and P/W and it kept failing. I ended up changing my U/N to U_N@ME.com and it finally logged in and worked fine. My .Mac address has always worked fine up until now.

pardon me, you fixed it?

Specifically, you changed your macbook username, or changed your icloud username?

It's times like these that Mac users tend to forget when they are busy bashing Windows and PC's...

Well, we can still claim we have better privacy here in the apple world. Windows data mining is very unfortunate, and Gates indirectly said he's not against giving the government access.

brought an iMac yesterday at Apple Store. I can't sign in to iCloud or iTunes, never mind iMessage. Not sure this is a related issue. I will try again tomorrow. If it doesn't work, i will call tech support.

I couldn't get into iCloud earlier, but that was probably an unrelated issue...

So Windows has never had a bug do anything like this?

My apology Pinky. Should have read your message. I think we are experiencing the same issue.

Read the posts - I've already provided a link to the system status along with others.

I feel like this happens to a random and small group of people with every major OS update from Apple - just this time the small group seems to be a bit larger. I was in one of those smaller groups before. I believe it's related to how Apple is trying to lock iMessage down to approved devices. They claim it's for better security and to prevent abuse - but Google Hangouts works on every and any platform and doesn't seem to have any notable security or spam problems.

Devil's Advocate: Google transmits and stores Hangouts on their servers, encrypted, but retaining the ability to unencrypt them for law enforcement.

Counterpoint: This is a matter of policy and not the technology; Google could choose to implement end to end encryption for additional privacy from both Google and governments, resulting in a messaging platform as secure and abuse-free as iMessage but without the broken DRM.

As a developer it's always curious to me what kind of changes have been made to an OS to cause this kind of difficulty in a new release, what changed since the previous version.
Yeah, and as a user,....why the changes that make USB audio input devices not work and why the changes that make LAN RAID hard drives access hopeless? 10.11.4 is pathetic while 10.10.5 is rock solid....so guys why would anybody "upgrade" to an inferior system?

It's possible that it's not related, but the timing was suspect. I used my standard username "xxxxxx@mac.com" and it would not log in; however, when I change my username to "xxxxxx@me.com" it logged me in. I sure can't explain it as I've always used the @Mac.com account rather than the @me.com, but it accepted it. I'm really not sure why I even tried it aside from knowing that it is one of the messages account addresses. As you're probably familiar, for those who have old @Mac addresses/usernames, they've automatically updated e-mail addresses to the later @me and current @icloud suffixes. I've no idea why this works for me, but I just verified and it is logged in using @me.com. These are the current accounts using Messages. Apparently, it only wants to accept my @me.com addreess as a sign-in now, though my mail, itunes, etc., all still use my @mac.com.

I just checked I am using .me.com as the login here and all just works for me

maybe apple has stopped the use of .mac.com addresses for these two apps nowdays

Glad to know its not just me. Just finished a Raid0 install on my macbook, had to get a fresh install. I thought I did something wrong. No more sweat on my brow, hopefully they fix this sooner rather than later.

....Seems I can't sign into Facetime either.

Fortunately I Haven't experienced this problem with both my Macs being painfully updated via the App Store. However this is p!ss poor considering the number of releases to developers and public beta testers. Hopefully Apple jump not only address this as a priority, but also show some transparency and accept that it's a problem.

As others have stated, this could just be server side issues. On a number occasions I've had issues signining into iMessage / iCloud unrelated to software updates

Not sure if anyone have the same feeling as myself sometimes...

It feels like using a PC now.

Further.. look at all the workaround and user-fixes in the comment section.. then refresh your memory back then when "It just works".

Using a Mac now requires more computer skills.

And that's insane.. when Apple was the one who tried (and led) in making computer usage extremely easy... now it is getting more difficult every release (if not everyday) now and then with bugs and malwares.

Sigh.

"Since the old man died Honda went to garbage. Sad."

Now just substitute ‘Honda’ for ‘Apple’.

I ran into this iMessage/FaceTime activation problems on my mom's iPad running iOS 8.x Couldn't get it to sign in so I just left it at that since my mom never use iMessage/Facetime anyway. I should probably update her iPad to the latest version and see if that would make any difference.
