BlueTooth has been Apple's Achilles heel for years. Sometimes I wonder if Apple should just replace all of its WiFi/BlueTooth engineers.

Absolutely. My iMac 2020 bluetooth device experience is way less than robust. Both with Apple hardware such as AirPods Max … something else. Apple doesn’t seam to be able to fix it.

I used to think it was a problem with … Intel tech … I guess not now.

actually i am glad to see this - some of us were having similar problems on the prior version of monterey on new M1 macbooks. maybe apple will now find and fix the bug since it has apparently gotten worse now.

Is the issue also present in 12.3 beta 1?
I have M1 iMac and M1 Max MBP running 12.3b1 but haven't tested against this observations. The first thought involves the fact that sleep has Wake up for network access on (default - energy saver) - that involves network traffic, iMessages/iCloud updates for applications. If you don't want any activity period when device is asleep you turn off both wifi/bluetooth. Universal control is using Bluetooth. Perhaps the assumption with this is that most leave a device powered, even a laptop when possible then simply putting it to sleep instead of turning it off, unaware that it wakes up for certain wifi/bluetooth communications all the time. Interested to see whats different now, concerning this threads discussion. :)

If their devices are running hot, then they are actually ON, not in sleep or hibernation. Somewhat common for people who click SHUT DOWN and then just close their lid before the laptop actually shuts down, leaving stuck apps and a system that isn't actually shutting down.
I know what you mean, but NO, I have turned those machine into sleep or hibernation mode myself and left them there untouched, often without closing the screen or touching anything after the sleep or hibernate button. The sleep light would come on and blink, or all the lights would turn off when hiberbating.

If they need to be on to run hot as you say, which is reasonable, this would mean that they turn back on after putting into sleep or hibernation mode. That's how broken Windows can be. Not saying Mac is always better, but that's the case with some Windows machine.

Prior to 12.2, my macs straight up didn't sleep. iMac 100% of the time, MBP about 25% of the time.

Insanity!
Yeah my iMac also woke up (without the display turning on) every 20 seconds or so. Really annoying!
I fixed it by turning my Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad off (With the switch on their backs).

Folks with an MacBook obviously can’t do this, but it fixed the issue on my iMac (For now)

Monterey is such an unbelievably huge hunk of garbage. I keep waiting for a major release that fixes all of the bugs I have with it (on my $4k laptop no less) and it just keeps getting worse. But at least we have a host of idiotic new features that Apple can advertise to the short attention span crowd. Glad I have a notification center I can't turn off while the stability of my incredibly expensive premium flagship computer is just ruined
Don't forget the annoying orange dot. Now THATS innovation

Apple released macOS Monterey 12.2 earlier this week, and some Mac users who have installed the software update are experiencing excessive battery drain during sleep mode, seemingly due to Bluetooth accessories frequently waking the computers.

The issue has been reported by users across the MacRumors Forums, Reddit, and Twitter over the last several days, but it is unclear how widespread it is.

Affected users say their Mac's battery life drops from 100% to 0% while in sleep mode overnight since updating to macOS 12.2. A few users tried to identify a cause in Terminal and found that Bluetooth accessories are frequently causing a "DarkWake from Deep Idle" that results in the Mac repeatedly waking from sleep, which drains the battery. The issue appears to be affecting both Intel-based Macs and M1-based Macs.

Users report that the issue ceases when Bluetooth is disabled or when all Bluetooth accessories are disconnected from the Mac, but this is not an ideal solution.

Apple seeded the first beta of macOS 12.3 earlier this week, but it is not immediately clear if that version fixes the issue. We have reached out to Apple for comment on the matter and will provide an update if we hear back.

Strangely enough I haven't experienced this (yet), I've left my M1 Air in sleep mode overnight multiple times now and it hasn't happened. Guess I'll have to keep a look out for this bug.

Monterey removed aptX/AAC support in favor of another codec which is more energy efficient but lower sound quality especially in third party headsets. Previously in Catalina and BigSur you could use Xcode's Bluetooth Explorer app to force the use of aptX but with Monterey it's no longer possible, they actually made Bluetooth Explorer app incompatible with Monterey and no longer bundled with the latest XCode additional tools.

There are some Bluetooth issues in general with 12.2 that were not present in 12.1, especially when using non-Apple branded earbuds or true 3rd party Bluetooth mice. Logitech mice with their adapter are not an issue.

“Behaving like Windows”. What a child. Owned Windows PCs my entire life. Never had this issue.

Maybe, it’s “Behaving like a Mac!”

Definitely a fair point, based on your own experience. I might add, though, that I’ve seen very similar battery drain behavior with my Surface Pro 4. It got so bad that I had to take it back. Microsoft never fully addressed the issue for several years, even though they had a battery replacement program in place (which only lasted for five years, I believe).

Not seeing this at all and I have a BT mouse and keyboard. So, while I'm sure this exists, let's not pretend every MacBook does this.

Right. We have the orange dot, but (a) I can't use my Mac with 1 external display without it kernel panicking occasionally, (b) 12.2 made it so that I can't even use this monitor with the right scaled resolution because they inexplicably made it low DPI so I have to use a 3rd party app to use the right resolution as it was in 12.1, (c) 12.2 made it so that the fn button on my keyboard which pulled up emoji menu in 12.1 stopped doing so solely because it doesn't have the globe printed on it meaning I need to buy a $150 keyboard to lessen my emoji shortcut from 3 buttons to 1 as there's no way to map it, and (d) now on top of everything there are phantom battery drain issues.

Well done Apple, really great OS you have here. Maybe for 12.3 you can use one of those online services to mail real animal poop to your users, it would still demonstrate to your users how much animosity you have towards them but be a huge improvement over the software you've been releasing recently, so basically a win-win

Thing is I had (or still have) this issue with my 2019 16" but running CATALINA. I usually found it in my bag closed but super hot because it insisted on waking up and running even so.

I usually also found a cryptic "mystery device" in my bluetooth list. Just a text string (some identifier kinda thing, not an actual device name) in the bluetooth device list that just popped up and went whenever it wanted.

This started happening soon after I got my Apple Watch s7 so I thought maybe it's related. Even though I've never tried to pair them.

I disabled the "allow BT devices to wake up the system" setting since it's still there in Catalina and my peripherals used when docked aren't bluetooth.
