It doesn’t seem like MacOS is advancing. It seems like every year they’re breaking things that used to work then spend the remainder of the year trying to fix them. Then the next version of MacOS comes out and the merry-go-round starts spinning again.
Also, I've yet to see a new feature that I really needed/found useful/wanted.

Part of software development does involve pushing the envelope with new features that customers may find useful, and then addressing any bugs or issues that might result that they couldn’t fix during the beta phase.

I would agree that Apple often seems to be on a merry-go-round with OS development, though. Many people on this forum and elsewhere have suggested that Apple should lengthen the time between OS releases, rather than sticking with this year-by-year schedule that inevitably causes collateral damage.

Wow. My ears hurt from reading this forum. Glad I’m on Mojave. o_O
I'm still on Mojave on my 2019 iMac 5K ... but I'm going to have to upgrade because some apps aren't supporting new versions on Mojave. I'm apprehensive about upgrading to Monterey. My M1 MPB is running Monteery with no issues so far, but it's not as complex setup as the iMac.

When I don’t use it I just close the lid. Not aware of this particular issue yet until now. Maybe I’ll check the log once I am back.
That option is no longer available in Monterey.
Oh boy. Apple never advertises these feature removals aren’t they? Are they putting more and more faith into their own belief?

This is what is going on with Apple. The only difference is it's the "Software Team"

Yep, I've been saying this for ages. The entire software management team needed firing years ago. The only possibility I can think of why it hasn't happened long ago, is clearly someone must have pictures of Timmy with that goat.

I'm still on Mojave, as it seems to be the newest macOS that's pretty decent. I will surely buy one of the new 16" M1 MBP's soon enough, but being forced to have Monterey on it is not rushing my upgrade, that's for sure. I'll be happy to wait until it seems to have less of these types of stories, and try and time it before the next OS release, and the next raft of disastrous new bugs. This is my daily, all day long, workhorse machine. I simply can't afford it to be running like a trash can due to some stupid collection of horrendous bugs that shouldn't even have made it out of the dev team into the test team's hands, let alone to production.

Do any of the top management in Apple even use Macs? Timmy himself has said that he doesn't understand why anyone would need more than an iPad. But even so, it's not like iPadOS and iOS run like a dream.

Timmy was also taking showers with his series 0 apple watch to encourage people to break their watches and buy new ones

The m1 macbook’s drain battery from bluetooth devices, but actually waking a macbook from sleep with bluetooth devices still takes like 20 seconds while in clamshell mode

I been having this problem since upgrading to 12. I even turned off my BT devices and BT on the 16 2019 MBP and it still drains when supposed sleeping. Also the MacBook gets quite warm.

I now shut it down when not in use which is annoying because I need to put in my pass code in when walking up but I am not woken by a toasty macbook down to 1% battery.

“Behaving like Windows”. What a child. Owned Windows PCs my entire life. Never had this issue.

Maybe, it’s “Behaving like a Mac!”

Cue down votes from fanboys.
I have 2 Windows laptop, 1 in the past and currently using Asus ROG laptop. Both drains its battery during sleep. Even when the lid is closed, sometimes the computer will run to the extend of spinning its fan that I will ended up with dead laptop in the morning. Sometimes it will happen in a bag while I commute to class.

So I had to shutdown the laptop, while my Macbook don't have this problem during 6 years of using. This is from my experience.

Sadly happening with my MacBook Pro as well.

Apple should really just focus on a stabilisation release, no new features and quick. Bluetooth has been a dogs dinner for far too long.

Apple released macOS Monterey 12.2 earlier this week, and some Mac users who have installed the software update are experiencing excessive battery drain during sleep mode, seemingly due to Bluetooth accessories frequently waking the computers.

macOS-Monterey-on-MBP-Feature.jpg

The issue has been reported by users across the MacRumors Forums, Reddit, and Twitter over the last several days, but it is unclear how widespread it is.

Affected users say their Mac's battery life drops from 100% to 0% while in sleep mode overnight since updating to macOS 12.2. A few users tried to identify a cause in Terminal and found that Bluetooth accessories are frequently causing a "DarkWake from Deep Idle" that results in the Mac repeatedly waking from sleep, which drains the battery. The issue appears to be affecting both Intel-based Macs and M1-based Macs.

Users report that the issue ceases when Bluetooth is disabled or when all Bluetooth accessories are disconnected from the Mac, but this is not an ideal solution.

Apple seeded the first beta of macOS 12.3 earlier this week, but it is not immediately clear if that version fixes the issue. We have reached out to Apple for comment on the matter and will provide an update if we hear back.

Has anyone done a P-RAM zap? Normally fixes issues.

Got a laugh out of the "running like a trash can" bit... I know it's not actually a funny situation...

About your comment that "Timmy himself has said that he doesn't understand why anyone would need more than an iPad," where did you see or hear him say that? I can't imagine that he would even be able to properly sort through his e-mails on an iPad, without using Mail filters and rules to sort through and categorize the huge volume of stuff he must receive. He must also use Excel or Numbers quite a bit to analyze and sort through spreadsheets he gets from his teams, not to mention presentations that he would view in PowerPoint or Keynote, which I suppose he could do on an iPad albeit not as comfortably as on macOS.

Actually, I imagine that Tim spends most of his day either sorting through e-mails, in meetings inside and outside the company, or traveling.

Tim's been with Apple since Jobs was there and before the iPad, so it would be a surprise to me if he spent the majority of his day just working on an iPad.

As I understand it, resetting the PRAM (now called NVRAM) generally resets only the following settings:
  • sound volume
  • display resolution
  • startup-disk selection
  • time zone
  • recent kernel panic information

You might mean reset the SMC.

He said it years ago, I can't exactly remember the quote, but I was shocked when I read it. I don't use an iPad, but my understanding is that all the software and functionality you've talked about is possible on one.

Regardless, I'm a software dev, and I can assure you I would be embarrassed if I passed on code with bugs like this to the test team, and the test team would be looking at me with disdain, as their job is mostly to find the unusual boundary cases that slip through dev. And if my test team failed to find the kind of bugs that make it through to production at Apple, they would have been fired long ago. Apple's standard quality of code wouldn't even make it out of our dev team. There's something weird and rotten going on in the software division at Apple. The hardware division has been killing it. The new M1 MBP hardware is top shelf. Why is the software so consistently trash? It's bizarre.

Yeah, I would certainly agree that Apple needs to work on their software stability. What can we do, eh. Apple is suffering from the same ills that afflict nearly all big corporations.

About the iPad thing, like I said, Tim would have a fearsome time in the Mail app on the iPad without using rules. iPad does not and has never supported custom Mail rules, unfortunately, which he would absolutely need to categorize and weed through the thousands of e-mails he must get from departments and customers all over the world. I don't think he'd waste his time using Mail very much on an iPad for that. (Apple might have a server-side solution that automatically marks and delivers e-mails for this purpose, but it seems more likely to me that they actually use Mail rules and perhaps an AppleScript solution.)

We do see him using both an iPad and an iMac in this YouTube video (see the 2:05 mark):

Well dang I wish I would've read this thread about 10 minutes sooner! I just installed 12.2 update on my 2019 15"MBP and while it was installing I was catching up on MR threads. And to think I was considering updating all the Macbooks in the household this weekend to 12.2. Haha, glad that didn't happen!

And naturally I've already witnessed the sleep/darkwake/sleep/darkwake/sleep/... nonsense. The only BT device I have is an Apple keyboard that I use with the MBP while it's tethered to my external monitor via an eGPU. I have some devices hanging off a USB hub as well including an external 4TB disk and a mouse with LED lighting. When the MBP is sleeping the mouse lighting is off; when it wakes, those lights are back on. With this new 12.2 sleep/wake/sleep insanity, this mouse is now like a strobe light. Well OK not that bad! It's cycling between on and off every 15 seconds or so.

The external disk is currently powered off and I imagine if it were on it would be spinning up with each wake and down with each sleep. That's surely unnecessary wear-and-tear and noise.

Looking at pmset I see that sleep is perpetually prevented by bluetoothd and dasd

How does stuff like this slip through the beta cycles? ¯\(ツ)/¯
