I'm usually one of the first to single out Apple on defects they should be able to catch and eliminate in the testing phase, this is an inherent problem with LCDs. The thinner they get, the easier problems like this will arise. All my LCDs do this short of one Dell ultrasharp 24". This should only b noticeable in low light and with a black screen, if it's unusually prominent go get it looked at by a mac genius. This isn't a design defect, it a manufacturing one

This seems to happen at every Apple launch.

I don't know if it is the lack of good QA or the fact that they are trying to build them so fast that corners get cut in the QA department. Either way Apple is good about replacing defective products.

My iPhone 4Gig has it now, oh, but it's 3 and 1/2 years old now...

:D

You should have exchanged it, why on earth would you accept a light leak as "normal"? I had a light leak on my iPhone 4, called AppleCare and they FedEx'd me a brand new one that was perfect.

If you accept a light leak on an iPhone or iPad, you have only yourself to blame. It is not, under any circumstances, normal. The fact that it's occurring to lots of people does not make it acceptable.

My 27" iMac does this. My 37" HDTV does this. My 20" G5 iMac did it. In fact, every backlit LCD screen I've ever had has done it, to varying degrees. I just thought it was a common thing with backlit screens. It's only apparent to me when an image is dark along the edges, and that occurs very rarely. The only screens I've owned that seemed to be immune have been my two iPhones.

Backlight bleeding as excessive in the picture is not common in high-quality products. A review will always rate bleeding as a negative flaw.

My Dell 24" panel (manufactured in Czech Republic, btw) doesn't have it, and neither does my Philips TV. Oh, and my iPod touch seems to be fine as well.

Their making these in China so it's no surprise they're having QC issues. Factor in the choice of cheap materials to keep the price down while still allowing for massive profits and you'll have these issues popping up. I'm not a fan of the ipad2's materials. They used first class hardware and wrappe it up in shet held together with glue.

I'm impressed by all you casual, relaxed people who hardly bat an eyelid at the thought of getting a replacement. I'm quite tolerant and long on patience, but taking something in for replacement, especially something I'll be using every day, doesn't seem worth it to me. It would be like replacing a car every week because the dash lights flicker. Even if the dealer had a new car washed and keys inside, full tank of gas and engine warmed up every time, I still wouldn't put up with it.

So you would rather accept a defective product than put up with the "inconvenience" of replacing it? Have you heard of AppleCare? They will overnight one to you if you complain loud enough, and that's one lousy phone call. To each his own I guess.

This is happening to mine. Apple will replace them when they get some in stock. Just going to have to live with it for now.

Quit whinging about minor issues and enjoy your beautiful new iPads. I hope Apple doesn't offer replacements of these so-called faulty units. If customer A isn't happy then customer B will gladly take the iPad off their hands. Customer A can go play with a Xoom instead that's all they deserve.

You need to take a break from all the Kool Aid you've been drinking. It's starting to show.

No no, not at all what I meant. I'm saying I'd take it back and get a refund.
Edit: Refund rather than back and forth with numerous defective product replacements, which sends an even stronger message to get it right the first time.

Sure just enjoy the iPad. Apple never promised a pixel perfect display. That's the trouble when a bunch of tech blogs start posting this garbage we end up with another antenna gate situation. It frustrates the life out of me. I love Apple and they don't deserve this.

I've seen some photos people have posted but I believe most of them to be photoshopped by Fandroids. It sickens me, it really does.

Apple doesn't deserve to be criticized for a product flaw? If you can see light leaking on your black display in normal room lighting to take a digital photograph of it... THAT'S NOT NORMAL!

"Apple never promised a pixel perfect display"? Are you kidding? You clearly must be high on something right now, because a pixel perfect display is what everyone expects from any display they buy. The fact that you decide to accept an IMPERFECT display is your problem - don't put your lack of self respect on other people in this forum.

The last paragraph of your post tells me everything I need to know about your lack of mental capacity.

liar, that's too long an answer.

sent from my iPad

:D ;)

He would say something more along the lines:

Unfortunately all electronic devices with screens tend to leak light.

sent from my medical leave iPad 3 prototype

:D ;)

Yep... imagine the PR nightmare the day they have a groggy Steve on medical treatments get up there and accidentally say something like "this is not an iPod / iPad isolated incident... All Apple products have these kinds of issues... Ooops... um..."

You are not holding it right.

LOL....

You, sir, have just made my week....

Really? That line is so cliche at this point. At least in the Macrumors Forums it's completely overused. Every time I read it I groan. (I'm referring to the "You're holding it wrong" line)

Totally agree. That line has been flogged to death. Although it does serve to give you an idea of the sort of person who, after months of hearing it, still slap their thighs and wipe their eyes and exclaim that "was so funny it made my week!!!1!!!"
It actually makes the "safari seems snappier" line sound like some sort of Wildean utterance.

how can you say it's nothing, if you don't have one?

Sure just enjoy the iPad. Apple never promised a pixel perfect display.

wow. well I dunno about other peoples, but mine had 3 spots about the size of nickels on the bottom of the display and it's not just a minor non-issue.. it is a defect and absolutely horrible looking.. but as if that was not bad enough, the top right side has another about the size of a dime..

if you saw it, I don't think you would trivialize it so much saying, "I love apple, just enjoy it" .. sure a cracked windshied isn't going to stop your BMW from running, but if you just bought your car, you sure wouldn't want people to tell you.. "I love bmw, it's a small 1cm crack.. just enjoy it.. they never promised that your car would be perfect"..

your logic makes no sense man... like I said, I am returning/exchanging mine tomorrow.. nothing more to be said other than, "mine is defective".

Interesting.

Played around with one at Best Buy today, noticed no such troubles.

I'll wait 'till I get mine to say for sure though.

I personally don't care if mine gets the problem. It'll just go away like last time. (The tint, that is.)

This is why I love my AAPL shares. Incredible, you won't find fanaticism at this level for any other brand.

I thought apple were supposed to be the "premium" brand, how can they let items like this leave their shops, or even factory?
Is there not some sort of quality control?
Or are they just banging out as many iPads as they can trying to sell them and then deal with te problems later?

LOL, you're right. Blind faith. And they wonder why some people say Apple fans are like a cult, or followers of an Apple religion.

Sometimes I'm glad I can't take my bulky Mac Pro to a public place, like an iDevice. I'd be embarrassed.

Wait, I thought there was no back lighting on LED's as they emit their own light....

BTW: Nobody expected the Spanish Inquisition... ;)

LED LCDs are still backlit by LEDs. Plasmas emit their own light. Which is why they achieve much better contrast ratios as they can shut off the pixel to make it a deep black. No light source behind it to "bleed" through.

Here's an exercise: go to any LCD device in your house. Turn on something that's as deep black a possible. Turn the bright ess all the way up. Now, turn the house lights off. You'll notice almost every device see this. The extent may vary greatly, but unless you can see it under normal operating conditions and IT SERIOUSLY BOTHERS YOU, it's nothing to go exchanging it over. Your replacement may have the same issue, or worse. Only in extreme cases will it actually affect the quality if the user experience, an under those circumstances, there's a warranty that Apple provides that should give you a replacement.
I wouldn't go rushing it back to the store till supplies level out, or you may be without your must-have-the-first-day device for quite some time. But seriously, not every defect is something to get your panties in a bunch over. It's apple sure, but it's still made by the lowest bidder in china just like everything else.

Actually, it started happening 6 months ago, after having and using it for 3 years (and well out of warranty).

iPad users are getting it right out of the box...

I was actually commenting on the fact that there's usually some sort of "write off" to justify the bad QC.

I'm seeing on the Internet people's reactions and many iPad 2 owners seem to not really care and are more than happy with it.

just not good at making them right the first time?

Returned My iPad

I just returned my iPad 2 back to Best Buy. I went in to the store complaining about the poor screen quality and the customer service rep. really did not know what to tell me. She said the best thing to do would be to call AppleCare. I called Apple and they said to return the iPad. I did end up returning it and I put myself on a waiting list for a new one. Before I leave the store the next time I am going to check the screen out to make sure. To spend $829 on something and have yellow blotches all around the edges just wasn't worth it for me.
