Some owners of the new Studio Display are facing issues when attempting to update Apple's newest monitor to its latest firmware, causing some customers to be told by Apple Support to bring in their display for repair at an Apple Store or authorized repair center.

A growing thread on the Apple Support forum (1, 2) includes owners of the Studio Display reporting that as they try to update the display, they're being presented with an error message that reads "Apple Studio Display firmware update could not be completed. Try again in an hour. If the problem persists, contact an authorized Apple service provider." According to users on the thread, reconnecting the display to another Mac and/or restarting the monitor does not address the issue.

Users on the MacRumors Forums are also reporting similar problems, with some being told by Apple Support to bring in their display for repair. Apple's Studio Display does run iOS, and users can update it through System Preferences on macOS.

Following reviews of poor webcam quality, Apple has promised a new update in the future that addresses poor camera quality. That same update could include a patch for the issue being experienced by users when trying to update their Studio Display.

I just updated my Studio Display firmware to 15.4 with no issue whatsoever. only took about 10 minutes to download and install. This article is a bit of fuss over nothing. Most of the people commenting don't even own a Studio Display. Whilst I was initially reluctant to purchase a studio display given the price, I have to say I am extremely happy with the display now that I have it. If you were already using the LG 5K display, then maybe it is not worth upgrading to the Studio Display, but coming from a couple of Dell 4K displays (high end ones as well), I have to say the upgrade to 5K along with the build quality was money well spent as far as I am concerned.

I can confirm that this latest firmware update (15.4) for the Studio Display DOES NOT address the camera quality issue at all.

My $400 dell 165 Hz 27 inch 1440p monitor with gsync and AMD freesync with a height adjustable stand and various displayport and hdmi inputs has NEVER had this problem. $1600 for what??? You gotta be kidding me.
Sorry, but you cannot compare a $400 dell monitor that is not even 4K with the 5K Studio Display. Not even in the same ballpark. I had no issues updating the firmware today on my Studio Display.

Better to get a cheaper monitor. It's not even worth it anymore.
Well that is subjective. The Studio Display is not for everyone at its price point, but for an app developer like myself that is starting at a screen for 18 hours per day, seven days per week, it was absolutely worth it.

I gotta admit, I really hate the… design philosophy of this screen. It's starting to look like an over-engineered mess.

I've got one coming in two weeks, and have been keeping a close eye on some other threads where people are discussing options for hooking up the display to everything else in the household… obviously many of us would be better served by a damned Dell 5k, but the market just doesn't give a fig.
I was reluctant to purchase at first, but I picked one up in store on Saturday and compared to the $1000 Dell 4K 27" monitor it replaced, I love it. Have no regrets about the price whatsoever, especially when the only alternative is that hideous looking LG ultra fine.

Things have been going downhill since 2013. I’m glad Apple is working on their own silicon and moving back into the power user space, but the situation with weird/bad design choices and endless bugs has been steadily worsening since 2013 (iOS 7 being a critical change for the worst).

I don’t think there’s much difference between 2021 and 2022. We aren’t even half way through the year yet.
Downhill since 2013? What planet are you living on? Are you trying to tell me that an iPhone 6 or whatever came out in 2013 is better than the iPhone 13 series? Are you trying to say that an Intel Macbook Pro from 2013 that used to burn your balls if you tried to do anything more than web browsing is better than the M1 series Macbook Pro? Endless bugs? Sure, there was bugs back in 2013 and their are bugs in 2022, but I think you are really reaching with that statement.

Monitors get updates reasonably often. I have an LG ultrawide and Samsung Odyssey monitor that both get regular firmware updates. You copy them to a flash drive, stick them in a USB port, and you tell the monitor to update. It was quite important for the Odyssey since it shipped with a bug that prevented 240Hz refresh on Nvidia cards. Considering that was the monitor’s biggest selling point, not allowing monitor firmware updates would have killed the whole reason for the monitor.

Everything electronic can get firmware updates. Have you ever updated the firmware on your TV? Your DVD player? Why should a monitor be exempt?
Exactly, even my LG fridge gets firmware updates.

if the firmware thinks the Studio Display is a Pro Display XDR does the stand vanish?

It triggers a pop-up for an IMP (In-Monitor Purchase) where you can pay £999 via Pay for the stand to be retained.

I have to say - I do love the Studio Display, though! It's the exact display I've wanted  to make for years ?

This seems to be an anomaly. Apple normally waits until everything is perfect before they ship a product. I can't imagine that they didn't know about the camera problem.
I can't agree with this. There have been many, many cases of Apple shipping products that aren't perfect or that have design flaws.

But in the case of the Studio Display, the webcam doesn't necessarily have a design problem. The issue is that they've simply taken a component that was used in mobile devices, put it in the Studio Display enclosure and led everyone to believe that the image quality would miraculously improve. They even described it as the best camera yet, which is absolutely nonsense.

The opposite has actually happened - the larger screen has simply the relative small nature of the sensor. It's the equivalent of shooting a film in 16mm and expecting it to look good at an IMAX.

The point is at a much cheaper price point the Dell comes standard with several inputs, including hdmi and displayport, runs at 165 Hz, has nvidia gsync and amd freesync premium, supports variable refresh rate in macOS, has a metal height adjustable stand, can swivel and rotate, has excellent color accuracy and displays crisp sharp text. And it doesn’t have any issues with firmware updates. For $400.

The studio display looks gorgeous but it has a lot of issues with it for the price it costs. Also the apple 5k display by default is scaled by the OS to render the OS in 1440p mode.

If I set my chair height so that my arms have the right angle using my keyboard, the non-height adjustable Studio Display is too low by 8". The hight adjustable one, at the maximum height, is too low by 4".

I am taller than the average person, but hardly a giant and my choices are:

1) Get a VESA mount.
2) Put books or something under the stand to raise it up higher.
3) Risk spinal damage from sitting for long hours with bad posture.

I'm sure as hell not going choose option 3. And option 2 isn't very appealing either (anyone who's happy with books under a display is likely to be happy with a cheaper one than this).

So if I was to buy one of these displays I'd be getting a VESA mount as a requirement, not as a "subjective" decision.

I also sit near a window - which makes working long hours at a desk more tolerable. Unfortunately it means the nano texture coating is also a requirement. I currently use an iMac and the glossy finish makes it almost unusable at times. Thankfully I have a cheap external display attached to my iMac.
For you, height adjustability and anti-reflective coatings are important features. I'm 5'6" or so, so the stand is less important to me which is why I said it is of subjective importance.

Personally I think it should have come with a height adjustable stand.

I don't really understand why this monitor runs iOS but I'm sure there is a good reason for it.

My biggest issue with this monitor is that it doesn't have ProMotion. It seems like that would be the one feature that would make it a homerun product. Without it its just like any other monitor on the market with the Apple price tag.

Probably because iOS has ready-made features that they use for the camera. No need to spend time and money on developing something new.

If you are using a newish Mac, why on earth would you need hdmi or display port? Also, I am sorry but a non 4k display is not even close to the sharpness of a 5k display. Variable refresh rate means crap really. I have Promotion on my iphone and my Macbook Pro, and to be honest, I am really not noticing a difference on the studio display stuck at 60hz. Yes if you sit there and compare, you can notice, but if you are just using the Studio Display, you don't even notice it.

I saw the price on this... I just... Unless it does my dishes can not see at this time in Apple's.. well how do we say... too many things... this reminds me of the days of the Newton/Printers/ Etc.. Too many products and not enough quality control. If this was my display I shelled out $1599 and it is giving me some error and its not user error I'd be very a little upset... This is wait for release number four when the price is $400 maybe, and the multitude of bugs are fixed. But hey you do you...

I don't like the direction Apple is going for in 2022 :/
Everything was much better in 2021... I also feel this year's iPhones will be the biggest disappointment ever excluding the camera.
and don't forget the emoji...
