Hey, I just had to update the firmware in my car. Updating a desktop display should be no big deal.

I had to do that to my wife's mini-van a few weeks ago. It was one of those "I can't believe this is my life" moments. Sitting there in a mini-van in suburbia, updating firmware so my kids can watch Frozen for the 99th time better or something.

So you ignored where I said "except in regards to its stand,".

Ignoring price (which is subjective) and the stand, demonstrate how the Studio Display is inferior to the LG 5K. At worst you can say that its as good as the LG5K but overpriced in your opinion.
The stands is kind of important, including VESA. Especially when it stands for minimum 400$ difference you need to get the same features back.

1299$ LG 5K monitor

1599$ 1999$ to get exact same base features.

Your original statement declared this OPINION to be a fact:

Your opinion is an opinion. It is not, and can never be A FACT.
It’s not an opinion when it’s a factual statement. It’s a bad investment as a monitor.

This is compared to the original display replaced that we can compare it to.

We have hindsight 20/20.

Same way I can say it’s objectively and factualy. Investing in blackberry stock in 2016 instead of apple stock is objectively terrible.

One went bankrupt, the other one didn’t

I have this. Bought my display the first day it was available, but hadn’t opened it until yesterday. The inability to update the display also led to the update for iOS not going through, until I unclicked the display update.
Are you connecting your studio display to an iOS device?

The stand is subjectively important; for example, I have no need for a VESA mount. Regardless, I already said that the stand is the only part of the SD that is inferior to the LG 5K.

I don't like the direction Apple is going for in 2022 :/
Everything was much better in 2021... I also feel this year's iPhones will be the biggest disappointment ever excluding the camera.
Things have been going downhill since 2013. I’m glad Apple is working on their own silicon and moving back into the power user space, but the situation with weird/bad design choices and endless bugs has been steadily worsening since 2013 (iOS 7 being a critical change for the worst).

I don’t think there’s much difference between 2021 and 2022. We aren’t even half way through the year yet.

Fact: Studio display is a better “investment“ because it will hold its resale value more than its competitors.

Some owners of the new Studio Display are facing issues when attempting to update Apple's newest monitor to its latest firmware, causing some customers to be told by Apple Support to bring in their display for repair at an Apple Store or authorized repair center.

studio-display-update-issues.jpeg

A growing thread on the Apple Support forum (1, 2) includes owners of the Studio Display reporting that as they try to update the display, they're being presented with an error message that reads "Apple Studio Display firmware update could not be completed. Try again in an hour. If the problem persists, contact an authorized Apple service provider." According to users on the thread, reconnecting the display to another Mac and/or restarting the monitor does not address the issue.

Users on the MacRumors Forums are also reporting similar problems, with some being told by Apple Support to bring in their display for repair. Apple's Studio Display does run iOS, and users can update it through System Preferences on macOS.

Following reviews of poor webcam quality, Apple has promised a new update in the future that addresses poor camera quality. That same update could include a patch for the issue being experienced by users when trying to update their Studio Display.

Jumping right in here.... Received my Mac Studio with Studio Display 5 days ago. Received alert for Apple Display software firmware update 15.4 and got the same error message that firmware couldn't be completed.
Called Apple tech, spend 3h on the phone with them.. They had me do all kinds of things, at one point my screen didn't even come on anymore. Eventually they said they would need to talk to an Apple engineer and get back to me next week. I wasn't even aware about the poor webcam quality, which I just checked... no words... it's horrible.

In two minutes I found two other display vendors who also release firmware updates for they displays.

That other companies do it too doesn’t mean it’s fine that this stuff should be so complicated and should be left to the “fix it later” mentality of the tech industry.

Did you read it?
1599$ Studio display stand is only adjustable in 1 dimension. Tilt up or down
No height adjustment or vertical adjustment

1599$(+400$) studio display stand allows an extra up and down adjustment
No vertical adjustment

1599$ VESA is not standard but must be chosen at purchase and excludes as stand
No stand

Cable is not removable

Both have equally good speakers, and both have terrible cameras.

Obviously this is not True. If you need a monitor with more than 1.000$ it’s job related and an investment.

the studio display is objectively a downgrade for the money you pay and features you get compared to the LG UltraFine 5K

They promoted it as the replacement for their display they discontinued for people to buy. So it’s not incorrect

I never said the display is useless. I said true tone is useless for work as it distorts the colors, it’s neat as a consumer function.

Such as? The list compared studio display,XDR, LG ultra fine 4K and 5K displays.

Unless your display is made of playdo

The only potential superior thing is it’s made of metal. And I’m saving 700$,
You need to pay 400$ to have a basic stand.

They have the exact same resolution and color accuracy
I'm sorry but if you think LG ultrafine is upgrade from studio display then there is something wrong with you or you are just a troll

So many people who can't afford the monitor are full of glee that there is a temporary glitch. They will never own the display but will follow with bated breath waiting for any issues and then jump to the comments to post a "told you so" response.

It’s NOT a factual statement. It’s an OPINION. 100% Opinion.

Objectively implies there is ZERO dispute and that something is provable and undeniable.

You cannot prove your opinion. It’s impossible because price alone means nothing, nor does features. It’s all about what works for the end-user.

Especially when you’re using it here.

If you you continue to redefine words to meet your own desire, you’ll never get anywhere.

We do NOT have hindsight because the Studio only just came out.

And YOU are now mixing up the definition of Investment. You started off with how, as a tool, it’s an investment in you business, and now you’re going down the ‘investment as a value’.

Which is it? Pick one and stick with it.

If someone finds the Mac Studio display to do what they need then who are YOU to say they are wrong?

If someone finds the idea that they can plug this into a Mac Mini and a keyboard and have a fully functional computer with WebCam and speakers, then who are YOU to tell them that they have made a bad decision. As such it is utterly impossible to declare your statement as a fact. Period. End of.

If you’re going to continue thinking your opinion is now a fact then there’s no point continuining this discussion.

It’s objectively true that the word objective has a fixed definition.

I‘ve noticed it’s subjectively used by many people who don’t know the difference between Objective and Subjective.

Is it objective or subjective? Objective and subjective are adjectives that refer to unbiased observations and biased evaluations, respectively. They each also have a grammatical sense, where they refer to the function and placement of nouns and pronouns in sentences.

  • Something that is objective is not influenced by feelings or personal biases.
  • Something that is subjective is up for personal interpretation and subject to personal feelings.
Since both subjective and feelings contain the letter S, you can use this shared feature as a mnemonic to help you remember which word is which.

Here we have a great example of “I compare products purely by advertised specs”.

By all accounts, the Ultrafine has poor build quality, reliability issues, and generally not the kind of premium feel a four-figure display should offer.

Imagine spending that much on an admittedly beautiful display, only to have to send it to the apple store for repair...
Big OOF.

Having a monitor that requires constant software updates is one of the craziest things that ever happened to technology.

Although, from a commercial perspective this is an excellent opportunity for locking people into a constant hardware upgrade loop once software updates are no longer supported.
The firmware is for features like Center Stage and Spatial Audio.

All Apple needed to do is focus on a good monitor. But the expense of sticking in an entire iPad engine in the display means cost cutting in other areas.

I haven’t seen any reporting that there’s something wrong with the monitor itself.

What do you want this years phone to do besides have updated camera? Now that ProMotion is there, what else is there?

Can we please remember how many horrific designs entered the market under Steve Jobs' reign at apple? I know this may sound like heresy to some, but even St. Jobs had a very much mixed track record.
Yes, but he also abhorred bad press about Apple. That got him riled up in uncanny ways. The slightest whisper of negative news and he was all over like flies on poop... and not in the good way. Products went through his hands before release, too, which caught much of the stupid crap early.

That's why we care about the vacuum he left behind. Same for Scott Forstall. That dude cared DEEPLY about iOS (it was his baby, after all). Without Scott and Steve, software has taken a nosedive. Craig can't wrangle both macOS and iOS, and so they both have suffered.

The vaccum of Steve+ Jony Ive has had a terribly negative impact ion hardware as well. Steve would have given Jony "that look" at the first iPhone 6 prototype with the camera bump and smashed it. Tim just accepted it and let it pass. Tim is business, not hardware/products/design.

So we all miss Steve. He was the real glue of the team.

So I might been lucky to have long delivery time on my order ?

In a month when I hopefully got mine. Apple might have sent out 2 or 3 more upgrades. The first issues fixed?
