Oh, I got your point loud and clear. You think as something gets older it should drop in price dramatically?

You're going to be one very confused and left out consumer with that mindset.

I paid £499 for my iPhone 4 from the Apple Store in Glasgow, SIM free. Yes, it's a lot of money for "a phone", but if I was looking to buy an iPhone today and had £499 (well, now £510 after the VAT increase), I wouldn't hesitate in spending it on the iPhone 4.

iPhone consumers, in general I find, are some of the most annoying people imaginable. I've been a Mac user for 10 years (not long compared to some), and the Mac remains my true "Apple love", however I am addicted to my iPhone. However, the attitude of being "owed" something by Apple when it comes to the iPhone and it's pricing is ridiculous.

I don't understand that mindset. Every other piece of technology (phones, computers) has their price drop the longer they stay on the market.

Ex.

The droid incredible was 199 with a contract last April. Now, it's 8-9 months old and you can get it for 149. Same thing happened with the original droid. The point is, every company except apple, lowers the price of their products as they age. So with them, it makes sense to wait it out and buy mid cycle. With apple, they maintain the same price point throughout the life of the product. So you either buy it as soon as it is released or wait til the next one. This goes for the macs as well.

Apple owes nobody anything. They can do buissness however they want. But as a consumer there is a way to maximize the value of your money and purchase.

I have to agree. Some people just need to have the latest gear, but the people who post the tedious, "Should I buy now or wait for iPhone 5" really get on my tits.

The new iPhone is six months away (end of July), which is half of the typical iPhone lifecycle, so it's still a fair amount of time. These kind of people are never going to be satisfied, it'll always be a case of "should I wait".

The iPhone 4 is the latest model, it's a massive step up from even the 3GS and is blazingly fast and comes loaded with a shedload of RAM. It's not going to die off this year, it's still going to be capable of running the next two (at least) iterations of iOS and will run any app you can through at it for the next couple of years.

The thing I don't get, is that these people will eventually end up missing out on one version of the iPhone anyway, due to the nature of 2 year contracts and a 1 year iPhone hardware lifecycle.

If you want an iPhone and have the money sitting, I say people should go and buy it. This tedious habit of people getting to January and humming and hawing over waiting SIX months, only to ask the same question six months later only with, "Should I sell my iPhone 5 now and wait for iPhone 6", is somewhat ridiculous and I personally couldn't be arsed with the hassle.

I completely agree! Words don't really explain it, but it just seems unreasonable to only use your brand new, present day top of the line iPhone for only 6 months when it will continue to be the best iPhone for the next 6 months.

You know, you can't really keep up with technology. People just have to accept that. It will just drive them crazy.

I guess people have their own opinions, but no way in hell am I going through the hassle of not having my current generation iPhone for more than a quarter of its lifetime (2 year contract) just because I want something that doesn't exist yet.

Yeah but when you need a phone, and it has to be an iPhone, and you need it now, then you know what your options are. There are no questions. Its either you need the iPhone now, or you don't. Thats the difference. Because people say "I need to buy an iPhone asap!!!! ..... but should I wait?"

I "needed" an iPhone last December. I was out of contract with verizon but I waited with my dumb phone until iphone 4. it can be done. The people you refer to are the 16 yr old types that have no self control.

I'm on a 12 month contract with a subsidised iPhone. I'll be able to sell it for more than I paid for it given current selling rates, which don't look like dropping anytime soon. Otherwise I'll have to look for a new contract. Makes sense to upgrade when the iPhone 5G comes out - particularly if it ditches that thin and fragile rear glass panel.

I'd also prefer a more rounded shape. This thin flat rectangle isn't particularly ergonomic.

Probably not. I'm pretty satisfied with the iPhone 4 (antenna aside, but I have a nice case on it, anyway). I love the glass design. It gets a lot of ****, but it's a gorgeous phone.

It depends on the specs. But I'll most likely stay with the i4.

I've found that iPhones don't decrease in value quickly. You could wait until the iPhone 5 is released to sell your iPhone 4 and still make the cost of early upgrading your phone and perhaps have some money left over.

Clearly you don't have an iPhone 3G.

How the hell can I answer this question when I know nothing about the iPhone 5? What the heck is up w/ these posts?

Att says I'm eligible to upgrade 6/19/11 and I bought the iP4 when it first came out... I'll be getting the new iPhone when it comes out and sell my iP4.

When the iP5 came out I sold my 3GS for $400 I'm sure I can sell my iP4 for that price or more.

I have no idea how you guys do it. Sell the iPhone 6 months before a new one, then buy the new one and use for 6 months, repeat.

It just seems like so much of a hassle, etc. I'd rather just have my iPhone for those six months while I wait.

My wife and I get a huge thrill out of all the hype and suspense...I guess you could say the iPhone launch hoopla is our drug of choice. I kinda get into all the fun of it and wouldn't trade it for anything. Theres a lot of worse things we could do I guess...harmless fun.

when my wifes 3G is up, i'll think about it. Most likely I'll give her my 4 and I'll get a new windows phone for the simple reason that I already own Visual Studio and can create apps for it. I won't be tied to apples BS.

But time will tell. I would need to play with both first and make an informed decision.

Not me. I plan on keeping my iPhone for a couple of years. I don't always need to have the latest and greatest.

Based off of current press releases it looks like the next iPhone will merely have some quirky app that previous iPhones can't use, along with an LTE chip. Of which unless it is in my area, I will keep my phone.

ok, so here's my case.

I'm still a VERY happy user of the 1st gen. iPhone  running on iOS 3.1.3
AND I'm not subscribed to any data plan. (they're REALLY expensive here, and they're sloooow)

This summer I'm traveling to the USA for 4 months (July to October) and I'm planning to get the iPhone 5. then, I'll sell the ol' classic one. How much do you think I could get for it? it's still shockingly in a really good state.

So I guess I'll feel a bit of a difference jumping:
from iPhone 1 to iPhone 5
from iOS 3.1.3 to iOS 5.0
from having no data plan at all to having a really fast connection

I'll be one happy puppy :D I've waited long enough, now I deserve a treat

Some ppl keep an older iPhone like the 3G or 3GS to use in between the sale and purchase, I have a spare 3GS I keep just in case one of the 4 iPhones we have breaks.

I will be. I'll buy the iPhone 5 when it comes out, possibly switching to Verizon, and selling my iPhone 4 to recoup the costs.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I will do again what I've done thee times already - sell my current gen iPhone just before release of the next gen. If form holds, I will more than cover the cost if the new device as I have each time before.

Getting $200 dollar deposit back from AT&T and will sell my current iPhone 4 for $400-500 dollars. iPhone 5 here I come!

If the iPhone 5, or whatever it's called, has a proper antenna, will make clear phone calls, I will buy it immediately & dump my iP4. This is the worst iPhone I've owned. I know Apple is able to do better.

If however the next iPhone is a moderately revised 4, it's the end of the line as far as me buying iPhones. I've had far too much fun & usefulness from Android to accept anything less.

Sounds to me should do that now. Are you attached to a contract?
