By the way, does anyone know why Apple rolled out Space Gray as an MBP option at the same time it ditched Space Gray as an iPhone option? Seems kind of odd.

(I have a new space gray MBP and "matched" it with a black iPhone 7.)
yeah but they are always changing, I've heard aluminum/silver will be gone too..

Source? I don't think aluminum silver is going anywhere for years to come
and sources for all of these other comments? lol.. point being, apples going in cycles... laptops were black, white, alum, now will turn again to different colors. Silver is nice, classic - but apple is simply 'spicing' it up. They clearly will offer other color choices in the next roll out. But I am close to someone who works for apple (corp) and my 'guess' is that will be the long range plan. Otherwise, the design is just the same and stale.

Sure, Apple likes to change things up, but it's still odd to discontinue a color on one product at the same time the color is not only introduced on another product, but introduced on another product with a very long life expectancy.

With tic-toc cycles growing apart and battery technology not much improving, you can only change the design up to a certain point. As many analysts already point out, future products will rely more on software optimization than major design changes.

who knows honestly, we all know apples is extraordinarily mysterious.

Right. Just wondering if anyone has seen an explanation anywhere. I can't be the only one who likes to have matched products, but that desire went out the window this time. (Well, at least officially. My black iPhone 7 hasn't arrived yet, but eyeballing space gray vs. black on Apple's site, they look to be very, very similar colors.)

Same here, they all have to match!
Discontinuation of SG iPhone was the only reason I purchased my MBP and iPhone 7+ silver.
Now left with a SG iPP 12.9", can't wait for April lol

Ive had space grey for 3 weeks and returned for silver why well the space grey is way to dark it looks dirty and the touch bar and keyboard dont stand out where as silver they stand out, i wanted to like space grey but i just couldn't, its to dark and looks like rusty silver

That's why they make 2 models. I love the space grey and completely disagree with all of what you said lol.

Guess I'm not the only one with a 12" rMB space grey that has a worn looking usb-c port:

exactly this - but here is the thing. Space grey doesn't work with everything well as it is too dark. The silver offsets a black iPhone for example really well but next to the space grey not so much.
I opted for silver in the end for 2 reasons -

1. looks sharper & doesn't change colour all the time
2. compliments my other apple products better [SG iPad, black iPhone]

My opinion of course.......

also I must admit in some light the space grey does look amazing - so what ever you want really :)

edit - the other thing that put me off was the space grey 15" I saw in the Apple Store which had scratches on the sharp edge of the screen and was all silver under. Stood out like nothing else and I saw it instantly. I hope all of you with SG don't have this as it would really drive me mad seeing it every day. Won't get this as bad with the silver....... hopefully not anyway.

I agree with you, I returned the space grey for the silver. I really wanted to like the space grey but it just seemed too dark in some lighting. It reminded me so much of an HP or other windows device.

I loved the SG and what I really liked about it was the darker color against the keyboard. The silver is nice but I think the SG looks better around the keyboard area and trackpad especially at night or low light.

I agree the SG looks great...I was also really concerned about the wear and tear. I've seen some mb from 2015 on eBay for sale with all kinds of scratches and dings on it. My OCD would drive me crazy if my new computer got scratches and dings on it where the color came off. I really don't think you can go wrong either way as long as you take good care of it.

Jeff Benjamin's SG usb-c port is worn in this video, and I'm sure he takes good care of his stuff. and it hasn't been out that long,

the usb-c ports will definitely wear, unless you dont charge your device ever (which you can't not do) or keep it plugged into a wall literally 24/7 without ever using peripherals

lol

SAME

I went with the space gray, just because I think it looks better than the silver one. My previous MBP was silver, and while it was also not bad to look at the darker variant just appeals more to my sense of aesthetics. It doesn't hurt that it just happens to go with the decor of my apartment.

I have yet to see any scuff marks or visible wear on the machine, and it has been in and out of backpacks and suitcases quite a few times. Obviously I handle the laptop with care, but then again it is a tool, not a family heirloom.

I like my silver 15. I would love to have everything match like a Scan Design commercial but its just not possible to keep that up... instead, I have wanted to have a MBP forever and silver is what I always thought of.

What do you guys think would you go for ? the Space Gray Colour or the Silver rMBP ? which looks chic ? I am confused !! I have got suggestions Space Gray Looks elegant but I feel Silver looks more classy and timeless even 5 years down the line it won't look bad. Don't know so much about Space Gray. What do you guys suggest ?

Considering that the macbooks in space grey are sort of affordable and has released two years ago, and the new macbook pros in space grey are relatively new but mostly preferred over the silver models, I'd say if you are buying the space grey ones to stand out, your macbook is not going to stand out in 4 to 5 years when space grey has gone so trendy. But then again, in that time you might be looking to upgrade your half decade old laptop. So even though I know some people say it all comes down to preference, the answer really is that. Preference, haha. Space grey shows oils much more just because it is darker. Why do you think white paper, white boards, a white screen, they hardly show oils (which your hand shows a lot of). White is clean and "timeless" it's like a blank canvas where you do all your paintings. That's why the macbook pro I am ordering is going to be silver or "white" because silver is closer to white. Doesn't show the white scratches as easy as grey and doesn't show smudge as much. But I have to admit.... Space grey looks clean and blends in with the black bezels, touchbar, and keys. Especially when you are in a dark room, space grey is just like someone took parts off a satellite and made a laptop out of it. Space Grey is not a bright, blank silver color, but it's a professional color that's clean when smudges are not on it. Either way, why be choosy about the color if you contemplate on putting a skin on it. Or even worse - a hardshell case that defeats the whole purpose of apple trying to slim things down. Don't get a color because you want to be different. Get a color you're going to love for years until you can upgrade. Either way, you won't be disappointed with any of these new Macbooks because they're just so slim and clean.
