This article is confusing. If iOS 13 changes to SiriKit allow Siri to play music and other audio from 3rd party apps wouldn’t that automatically include Spotify?

Which thennnnn makes this article moot beyond said^ information? lol. The title is really all we need.

Oh no, the EU competition commission has teeth and DOES bite hard!!!.... it won’t leave any stone unturned and I think that’s worrying Apple.. a lot... Apple can’t buy them off either, but they’ll probably run crying to the US President again..

It is unfair competition, although some of our American friends disagree.

Being a Spotify subscriber, I would absolutely love this. Although I'll try to be optimistic this actually comes to fruition.

Spotify is destroying Apple Music in paid subscribers. So no doubt Apple will remain as a**holish about this as possible for as long as possible.

It's confusing for sure. I think the biggest gripe here is that if you said "Hey Siri play Coldplay" it would open Apple Music. For Spotify you'd have to say "Hey Siri play Coldplay on Spotify" Spotify want's the user to have the option to set a default music player so you don't have to use the add on "on Spotify" I agree with Spotify on this one. Giving the user a choice of what music player, browser, podcaster, or whatever is default would be a win for everyone but Apple sees it as a loss.
If I asked Siri to play Coldplay I hope the phone shocks some sense back into me.

Apple isn’t limiting features. Siri started out locked down to Apple only. Over the years Apple has increased functionality and allowed Siri to be used with more and more 3rd party Apps.

Apple also did this with multitasking, TouchID and NFC (initially Apple only and locked down, then expanded later on). This is Apples MO.

Now if Siri initially worked with everything, and then Apple intentionally cut off Spotify (for example), then I’d agree Apple is “limiting” features.

Ok so it chooses which 3rd party apps can work with Siri now seems like a measure to reduce competition which seems like a no no to me. Clearly this is a tactic to reduce iOs locked peopled from using Spotify which feels pretty anti competition to me anyway.

Then switch to Android, Apple isn’t about a choice but making iOS simple for everyone to use. Apple will never let users default to other apps that isn’t their own
So basically if we do not want to do things the Apple way we would leave? Instead of ways to honestly make iOS better.

iOS is good but their are a lot of short comings in it that in some ways Android does better. One of them is the ability to set default apps for everything. On Android I can set default maps to use (waze, google or others) or default email, sms client ect)
What is wrong with letting us set our default music player or default pod casting app. It would make life a lot easier.
iOS does a lot of things better than Android and Android does a lot of things better than iOS. Why can we as a user not be allowed to want the best features of the other main OS in the one we use.
This case wanting to change the default music app is one of them.

The Apple way is not always the best way. Some times it is removing good choices.

A couple of things I don't have right now are Homepod and Carplay. If this is a step to open up Homepod to other services, I would give it a try. Otherwise, I'll stick with other options there. This would be nice for using Siri handsfree in Carplay.

Isn't it obvious Spotify is campaigning against Apple....even though it gets preferential treatment compared to other Apple Developers.

They do? They obviously don't with Siri as other 3rd party apps are allowed to use Siri. What preferential treatment does Spotify get? Genuinely asking as I don't know.

This makes no sense.

"Apple isn't limiting features, they just didn't let anybody else use the fingerprint scanner, voice assistant and NFC on their phones for a while.. "

That’s some good news for Spotify users like me :)

why I like Spotify? Well, $4.99 for 3 things I use these days Hulu, Spotify, Show Time. Happy camper

I think we need a dislike button here on MacRumors for people that absolutely make no sense and judge by what you listen to your music with.

It annoys me that when I am playing music via Spotify (or other service for that matter) and say a call comes in, then Apple Music takes over. In car play its even more aggressive. I want a default music player that I can set.

Hahaha so Spotify logs an official complaint to the EU competition commission, and all of sudden Apple is trying to majorly suck up to them...

Hmm an extremely clear sign of a guilty conscience from Apple I think....

Too bad Apples actions in this are completely contradictory to your made-up fantasy about Apple only doing this to appease the EU.

Apple has been regularly expanding Siri adding new developer tools/frameworks over the years. This is just another in a long line of these additions. But go ahead and pretend it has to do with the world's biggest tech whiner (Daniel Ek of Spotify) trying to get the EU to step in.

Why is permission required? If Siri was “smart” enough, couldn’t Siri simply accept a command, open up the Spotify app, and find the requested music and play it? There’s no copyright issue that I can think of.

That has nothing do with being able to set your own default apps. Being able to set a default isn't mutually tied to an OS being easy to use. "Then switch to Android" is an argument I'm really getting tired of seeing around this community.

You can easily design prompts/options/what have you that allow you set those things up. It has absolutely nothing to do with ease of use. Apple doesn't allow you to set default apps because they don't want that to be easy to use. That purposely bad design, not good design.

Oh come on, it took this long to get SiriKit for audio because Apple didn’t want to give it to Spotify. They couldn’t just exclude Spotify so everyone suffered. Now with anti-trust breathing down their neck they open it up.

Really need Spotify to support offline playback on the Apple Watch, but don't think Apple is preventing that with Pandora support already there. Just Spotify being lazy.

There was no API to allow Spotify to build the functionality. Then the initial Sirikit API restricted audio apps.

I don't use Apple Music nor do I use Spotify. However, I will admit that, should one have a subscription to Spotify and NOT Apple Music, the requirement to specify "... on SPOTIFY" is superfluous and not how a "normal" conversation would proceed. That is, "Hey Siri, play [X]" shouldn't come back with "You do not have an active subscription with Apple Music. Would you like me to sign you up for a 3-month free trial?"

No, Apple doesn't do that at all. What Apple has been doing is adding Siri functions in "groups". They're not "choosing" which Apps specifically can work or not with Siri.

This has been going on since iOS 10 with each new version of iOS adding even more Siri functionality for third party Apps. iOS 13 adds functions specifically for music, radio, podcasts and other media related items. That's 4 years and 4 versions of iOS with expanded Siri functionality.

Oh come on, it took this long to get SiriKit for audio because Apple didn’t want to give it to Spotify. They couldn’t just exclude Spotify so everyone suffered. Now with anti-trust breathing down their neck they open it up.

Sure. Whatever you say. I'll stick with Apple's track record of adding Siri features every year for the past 4 years instead of believing in conspiracies. Further, the EU investigation didn't even start until just before WWDC 2019. Are you going to claim that Apple added in these frameworks at the last minute just because of Spotify? That's beyond ridiculous.

I can actually set the default browser for my Macbook to Google Chrome. Apple's one of the wealthiest companies in the world, if they wanted to, they should be able to figure out default browser for iOS, as well as default maps and music playback.

I love saying simple commands on my Google Home Mini "Shuffle Today's Top Hits" or "Play Sam Smith" since Google lets me set Spotify as the default, instead of YouTube Music. Amazon also allows Alexa to set the default music instead of forcing Amazon Music.
