Because anyone with a half a brain knows that what Apple give you for $99 is an incredible deal. Companies use to charge thousands of dollars for half of what Apple gives you access to, but they subsidize this by charging a commission on paid apps.
Unless you have to lay open your financials to justify your monetization which you claim fair and prove the point (which Apple wasn‘t able to do in front of the DMA), we already know that your theory does not hold water.

No it’s called business after all
That’s just the way the big ball bounces

Since Apple does not offer Spotify subscriptions I don’t see how they can be guilty of misdirecting customers.

It remains to be seen if DMA has any impact on the App Store. Personally, I believe the alt-app store thing will be a failure. First, alternative stores don’t seem to bring much profit to Android, and second, people don't like change. These alternative stores are going to have to convince people to change their buying habits. I get the hobbyist what's to tinker but for these stores to be successful they're going to have to make money.

Alternative marketplaces with the CTF are of course anti-competitive. But since they now greenlit the sideloading, most will create a true and unsanctioned alternative marketplace, outside the reach of Apple.

That will have the same success as it does on the desktop, which also has its strongest revenue in pure downloadable appls and marketplaces.

"Used to" being the operative word. Most development kits, including the complete documented API for most modern operating systems is given away for free. Because most OS developers not named "1990s IBM" have long since understood that an OS is worthless without developers writing software for it.

The only real exception in the modern world is Microsoft's price for Visual Studio Pro and Enterprise, but in those cases, you're paying for an entire collaborative development environment, not just the IDE and APIs.

And let's not forget how much you gain out of VSC for free. That tool is amazing and I have barely used 20% of its feature set.

Yep. I've moved from developing in C# for Dynamics GP to developing in AL for Dynamics 365 Business Central. The former had to be done in VS, the latter is done in VS Code. Code is incredibly powerful for what it does.

It's really funny how anti-DMA people say
  • DMA is the worst thing for the Apple and the whole ecosystem, it's going to make Android from the iOS
  • alt app stores will not be really used

At the same time. Choose one. Either it's a big thing and it may change the ecosystem or it won't be used and you can safely ignore it as it won't change the app distribution at all. You can't say both. Or you can, but it does not make much sense.

I don't disagree, I use it everyday. But VS is way more powerful and understand most don't need it.

Both these things can be true. I can only go by what I see and read online, but from what I understand all stores aren't that profitable on android either?

It's called cope and I suppose it doesn't have to make any sense.

The good thing is, EU does not care about profitability but rather for more competitive market and for the freedom of choice for the customer - even if its for a minority.

More competition is always better. It drives features up and prices down.

So I agree this whole alt stores probably won't affect majority of customers. But with that said - it's even more baffling to me how loud you - and other anti-DMA guys - are. It's like anti-LGBT movements. Why people, who're not affected by this thing, are so loud? Just ignore the whole thing, continue using your blessed Apple's app store and let us others have an option of choice. Option to choose apps uncensored by Apple's app store's guidelines.

In face of such a choice most would realise that switching to android for a music app is not worth it. That’s why Spotify is f@@@@@.
Thank you. Spotify came out in 2006. A year before the iPhone. They were able to become what they are because of the investment that not only Apple made, but Google and Samsung have made over the years to create portable devices that people want.

Spotify is that broccoli you get when you order Chinese… a garnish. You can eat it if you like or feed it to the hogs.

Personally, I think it's insulting to compare this to something like LGBT struggles. You're not being prosecuted and belittled because you don't have alternate app stores on your iPhone or can install some random app.

And likewise, Apple, Google, and Samsung were able to offer compelling devices because the likes of Meta, Google, Spotify, Microsoft, and countless others chose to create apps to run on those small devices.

It's almost like the word "ecosystem" actually means something.

What? You completely missed the point.

If you hate LGBT movement and you're not one of the affected - then it's just dumb.

If you hate the DMA giving more freedom for those who requires it and you're not one of the afected - then it's just dumb too.

And yes Apple's censorship can harm actual freedom of speech:

HKmap

In October 2019, Apple removed the HKmap.live app from its App Store. HKMap is used to track the locations of protests and police in Hong Kong. Apple stated that the app "allowed users to evade law enforcement".[51]

Navalny

In 2021, Apple and Google removed the Navalny app from the App Store and Google Play Store respectively. The app was pulled the day of Russia's parliamentary elections which cause the app's creator, Alex Navalny, and his supporters to claim that the two companies are taking part in political suppression.[53][54][55] Apple sent a letter to Navalny's affiliates stating that the app had content that is illegal in Russia.[54]

So it is quite an important topic too.

Apples $99 is just a protection fee to avoid reviewing too many apps and overcrowding the app store. It is in their best interest to offer all the necessary tools for free in order to attract as many developers as possible as they push their platform and make it interesting for buyers. One might argue that Apple won't be where it is today without Spotifys help and you would still buy individual music tracks on iTunes.

Maybe make a real survey on devs then. How many are happy to pay 15% for the glorious service that Apple provides. That same service that bullies devs that Apple doesn‘t like, like Spotify and Epic
Make your own survey, buddy.

I’m just telling you that this independent developer thinks the App Store is a good deal for his business.

I’m sorry that bothers you 🤷🏻‍♂️

I sorry but being against government overstretch through unnecessary regulations has absolutely nothing to do with the struggles that the LGBTQIA+ community deal with. Maybe you should understand why people are not for DMA. I strongly view this as the EU trying to tell companies how to run their businesses which I'm against. Ironically, I'm actually for strong regulations when it makes sense for example when it comes to the environment, clean air and clean water, etc. I also believe there's a place in regulations to prevent things like junk fees that credit card companies try to charge and predatory lenders these things that actually hurt people. Not having access to an alt App Store on your iPhone doesn't hurt you.

If your argument is correct about people wanting high quality music then why isn’t tidal not number 1
Because other services such as Amazon and Apple itself offer the same quality at a lower price point (until now that is; Tidal is adjusting its pricing in April). I feel that you have a very simplistic understanding of market forces.
