I want it to allow me to set ALL podcasts to play in the proper order, rather than having to set each one, and to also remember the setting properly.
I agree a setting for all would make sense, but the current solution is to set it per show which only take a few seconds. I don't think it's that bigger deal, but I see your point.

I would listen to podcasts on my iPhone or my Mac, but I more or less stopped when Apple broke up iTunes into three different apps. It was even better when the iOS App Store could be accessed that way as well.
Couldn’t agree more. Whoever at Apple thought it was a good idea to break iTunes up into Music / Podcasts / TV / App Store is a nong. Probably the same person who decided to move the iPhone power button from the top to opposite the volume buttons grrrr.

Podcasts don't really matter. And Spotify still doesn't make money. If anyone can eat Spotifys lunch it will be Amazon. I'm not sure this is any kind of issue. I think it would have been wise fo Apple to have stepped into Podcasting more directly early on, but it's such small potatoes.

Amazon (in general, maybe excluding their Audible.app), Podcasts.app have such **** UX when compared to Spotify, Overcast.app that even if Amazon, Apple purchased exclusive content, it wouldn’t make the critical mass switch IMO.

Podcasts.app still has a great UI though.

I wish Apple's podcast had a switch that enabled "catch up" mode. When turned on, the player will always start with the oldest available episode. It would be so much easier than the way it works now where you have to fiddle with a couple of settings and there's no real feedback. Just make it one of those green switch things. Catch Up Mode.

Apple has had five years to eat Spotifys lunch, in that time Spotify had added more subscribers than Apple has.
Apple is in the podcast directory and the podcast player market. They are not in the podcast hosting or producing markets, the market(s) that Spotify has invested into over the last couple of years (though Spotify of course is also in the player market).

Hope they do a better job of competing with Spotify in those markets than they have in music

I use Spotify to listen to podcasts, however I find it pretty terrible to find new podcasts on Spotify.

Ive never found a podcast app that does everything really well to be honest.
This is what amazes me about people listening to Spotify for podcasts. I know the feature exists but damned if I know where to find it. And I use Spotify everyday!

Sure, but note that the numbers in this article only relate to the player market, not the directory market. Apple's marketshare in the directory market is noticeably larger because there is a good number of third-party players that use Apple's directory.

In the player market, there is also the fact that the Apple Podcasts player only exist on iOS while Spotify exists both on iOS and Android. While in raw revenue (or subscriber) numbers, with music the sum of iOS and Android certainly matters the most, looking how Spotify and Apple Music do on each of the two platforms is also a relevant metric.

The only app I have ever hated more than the Apple Podcast App (on both MacOS and iOS) was the old PocketMac we once had to use to sync our Mac with our Blackberry. I listen to a ton of podcasts (12-15 hours a day) and I can't image any of those signing on exclusively with Apple or Spotify, thankfully.

Well honestly, if a third party app uses the iTunes directory, such as Overcast, you can't really count them as an Apple customer they have consciously chosen to use a different app.

Also Apple makes nothing from this it's just an API that third party devs can use to search the iTunes directory.

I will say that Apple has the subscribers that matter - namely the paying ones.

This sounds a lot like the whole “google play store has more users, but lower revenue” paradigm all over again.

I use Pocket Casts, switched a year or so ago, when looking for a better option. I was annoyed the countless times I had downloaded something on Apple Podcasts, would get on a plane with airplane mode on, and nothing would play.

And I signed up for the lifetime membership when they offered it, sooo I'm golden now.

Spotify's "efforts"?

I think you mean Spotify's millions of dollars in subscriber revenue have been paying off. They've been buying up exclusive rights to podcasts left, right, and centre, funded by investors and subscribers.

This puts me in a bit of a moral quandary, because many of the podcasts I already love have moved over to being Spotify exclusives, and I refuse to subscribe to Spotify until they start compensating music creators equitably.

Essentially, Spotify has been treating music as a disposable commodity to drive subscription revenue, which they have then spent on acquiring podcasts.

And Spotify also doesn't really make any money from podcasts played through their player (except for the ones it produces if those contain ads or sponsoring). The question is how many people switch from Apple Music to Spotify (the only way Spotify really makes money from podcasts) just because they find either the Spotify podcast experience so much better than any other podcast player available that it leads them to switch their music streaming service OR they want to listen to one of the few Spotify exclusive podcasts. The latter might actually be relevant but it is also revenue that comes at a cost (the cost of producing and hosting those podcasts).

Considering how little control they have over hardware, operating systems, their size and location, Spotify is so good it’s surreal.

I went back to the Apple Podcasts app and Apple Music. Then I saw the Spotify privacy label and was even more convinced I made the right decision. I don't know how Spotify justifies charging the same as Apple Music but collecting SO MUCH data on their users.

Because most people want the best product not one that its inferior by some way but collects less data.

A large amount of iOS users are using instagram/Tik Tok/Youtube/Facebook anyway

I’ve found the Apple Poscasts user interface totally abysmal and unintuitive ever since the old skeuomorphic version was replaced 7 or 8 years ago. I have to dig so deep just to get a chronological list of episodes. At times it’s had major bugs that persisted for years too. I still use the app every day but it’s incredibly frustrating at times.. especially when it once was so intuitive and simple
