Really? I had to listen to a spotify exclusive podcast for the first time the other day, as it was relevant to something we're working on.Spotify app continues to provide a much better experience overall
Problem 1 is user error. Problem 2 is iOS bug. I use Spotify for at least 10 hours a day and have never encountered this but have encountered iOS being trash and cutting off audio for an app until app restartReally? I had to listen to a spotify exclusive podcast for the first time the other day, as it was relevant to something we're working on.
It first went wrong when the link shared to me was to the wrong episode... human error maybe but a confusing interface is the real cause and it wasn't a good experience (I listened to the wrong episode). I also had problems getting it to play, having to try multiple times.
And when we listened later in the car, twice it didn't send audio over bluetooth and had to be fixed my force quitting spotify. Never had that problem with Apple or Overcast.
The experience was so bad I didn't subscribe even though it was free and I loved the content.
I was/am a huge Joe Rogan fan, but I haven't listened to any of his Spotify output as I can't be bothered with yet another app.
Being able to listen to entire 2-3 hour shows on YouTube was perfect. What I missed on YouTube I caught up with on Apple Podcasts.
Podcasts were meant to be available to all. Exclusivity/greed has ruined it, like it ruins everything else.
Yeah, I could just download Spotify. I guess I would need to become a Premium member to get an ad-free experience. I like Joe, but not at £9.99 a month or whatever Spotify charges.
No, they don’t. And it’s not close.I will say that Apple has the subscribers that matter - namely the paying ones.
This sounds a lot like the whole “google play store has more users, but lower revenue” paradigm all over again.
If only that were truePodcasts are an uninteresting dead end!
You mis spelled shoutcastShame---Apple was the OG distribution system (and perhaps still are for all I know).
Leave it to you to make excuses for Apple's failing. It doesn't "a lot like the whole “google play store has more users, but lower revenue” paradigm all over again" nonsense. It sounds exactly like what it is - Spotify is FAR and ahead of Apple in the podcast market. Apple had YEARS, repeat YEARS ahead of everyone in the podcast segment and they completely sh** the bed and let it languish and dissolve.I will say that Apple has the subscribers that matter - namely the paying ones.

It does play them is Sequential Order just have to select it as an option. The default option is the most popular one which is to get the latest episode. Per podcast, you can change these settings as well, downloads all (great for a series) or just download latest (good for news-based podcast). This does not surprise me in the least. Has anyone at Apple actually attempted to use Apple's Podcast app? It's absolutely terrible. I mean, it's not even intuitively obvious how to play episodes (reliably) in proper chronological sequence! That's really important for those podcasts with intense, literary, plots to follow. You know, like My Dad Wrote a Porno*. Try figuring out what's going on in that if you get them out of order! Heck, try figuring out what's going on in that in any given sentence for that matter, even if you're listening to it correctly! But really, Apple's Podcast app is hands-down the worst Podcast app I've ever seen, so it's not surprising that people are using other ones. Think Different! Overcast is pretty nice. Or Spotify.
* Not MY dad. Do not listen to while driving. Do not listen to while wishing to appear sane. Do not listen to while mowing lawn. Do not listen to during sex. Do not listen to without installing sense of humor first. Do not listen to with conservatives. Do not listen to if you work in the pots and pans industry.
Overcast might be going down if the lawsuit with Epic and the individual State bills pass. Overcast (and a few other podcast apps) rely on Apple's podcast feed which Apple doesn't officially offer it as a service but as they start to tighten up services it might be one that gets locked up. (See Google Map 2018)I want it to allow me to set ALL podcasts to play in the proper order, rather than having to set each one, and to also remember the setting properly. (My key word is that was 'reliably' - which I probably could have expanded on, and now have!) That said, Overcast also does not allow this, but at least the rest of the app is much nicer, with that particular setting easier to find and tweak, with nice big easy to see buttons rather than tiny little ones. Fundamentally a lot of these issues come down to Apple's current lack of focus on making good, visible, usable UIs. Download Overcast and find that setting; it's obvious and easy - it's right there in your face as soon as you choose a podcast and download the first episode - three big visible buttons "Unplayed | All | Settings". Just as it should be. Apple's Podcast app? Nope, gotta dig for it, and even then I've experienced a lot of cases where it doesn't seem to "stick." Overcast's seems to work properly.
So, so important if you're listening to My Dad Wrote a Porno, after all! (hint, hint)
Spotify has got 155 million premium subscribers. Last we heard Apple Music had 70 million. So not really
Kinda like iTunes -> Apple MusicPodcasts started out great. Then, like everything, through a combination of bloat and neglect, the podcast experience has become yet another sewer.
Nothing gold can stay, I guess.
And Spotify also doesn't really make any money from podcasts played through their player (except for the ones it produces if those contain ads or sponsoring). The question is how many people switch from Apple Music to Spotify (the only way Spotify really makes money from podcasts) just because they find either the Spotify podcast experience so much better than any other podcast player available that it leads them to switch their music streaming service OR they want to listen to one of the few Spotify exclusive podcasts. The latter might actually be relevant but it is also revenue that comes at a cost (the cost of producing and hosting those podcasts).

That app was like peak overdone skeuomorphism, but also I loved it. It was so clearly a labor of love how the controls would come up from behind the artwork and look like a tape player. So clever, but also… completely nuts.I’ve found the Apple Poscasts user interface totally abysmal and unintuitive ever since the old skeuomorphic version was replaced 7 or 8 years ago. I have to dig so deep just to get a chronological list of episodes. At times it’s had major bugs that persisted for years too. I still use the app every day but it’s incredibly frustrating at times.. especially when it once was so intuitive and simple
