Oh that's true! I hope the iPhone is also released for T-mobile (who cares if they merge as long as they get it before that). Then we might see some carrier wars. Return of unlimited plans or at least lower prices. Competition is good for the consumer

Tmobile is getting the Phone, AT&T wants to lock in Tmobiles subscribers to new 2 year contracts now so they will be AT&T customers after the merger, Tmobile wants it to happen so if the merger doesnt happen, they have a bunch of subscribers with new 2 year contracts on Apples newest phone.

Adding Sprint to the lineup of iPhone carriers is good news for customers in the United States.

Now, if only Apple would break Softbank's stranglehold here in Japan and begin offering the iPhone on DoCoMo and AU. One can dream...

You do all realize that Sprint's data speeds are nearly identical to EDGE speeds which are 2G speeds. Almost impossible to hit 1Mbps on Sprint. When I had the Evo 3D I averaged around 40Kbps-800Kbps. Rarely did I ever hit 1Mbps. Now if the next gen iPhone supports their WiMax that would be great. I got 12Mbps down on WiMax.

I don't know where you're getting that from. I've had Sprint in the Bay area and data speeds were better than VZW's. (3G).

what would be really awesome is if the rumors about a dual-chip iphone are true... Imagine buying a full price out of contract iphone and being able to choose between CDMA and GSM carriers. Now that would be schweeet
Why? They don't give any discounts for refusing a subsidy anyways. Unlocked phones are good to avoid roaming charges if you often travel internationally.

Well here in Chicago, I averaged those speeds via the Speedtest app.

I'd rather be on a GSM network. CDMA is old technology.

OK, you people who own other "dual-mode" phones...

Is it possible to own ONE phone and switch between GSM (like AT&T) to CDMA (Verizon) at will if one pays for it somehow?

Like having a pay-as-you go plan for Verizon, but own the phone through AT&T.
That way when AT&T fails you, switch to Verizon and use their minutes?

I was with sprint for 10 years and liked them a lot. Given a choice I would prefer Sprint. (Dallas)

However if ATT lets us upgrade before the 2 year mark I'm pretty sure I will take the shiney thing. If they make us wait the full 2 years... later ;)

Sprint coverage is horrible around me, and I live in the DC area.

Also, I'm not a fan of unlimited plans anyways (explanation)

I live very near you and had MUCH better service for the 5 years I had sprint than the past year while on ATT. Crazy how different it can be within just a few miles.

I'd rather pay $400 (or less) for a unlocked iPhone X and then pay Virgin Mobile $35 a month for 24 months - total $1240!
Unless you somehow remain one of the very few people able to do this trick, I am fairly certain that $35 plan will not be available for iPhone owners for very long. Without a contract, you'll never know when they might increase it. Otherwise, yeah, that is an easy math, a no brainer option, unless you are concerned about coverage.

As soon as this happens, you can kiss goodbye to Sprint being the best deal in wireless. Data caps will follow shortly afterward, just like they have everywhere the iPhone goes.

Sigh. Let's hope T-Mobile holds out.

You can get an unlimited data plan for as little as $70 a month with sprint, and it's the only TRUE unlimited plan left in America.

Sprint coverage here in Omaha is way better than AT&T and Verizon. Sprint is the only company i can get a signal inside my home at all.

We already have the family unlimited data plan. Can't wait to get an iPhone 5 on Sprint and tether to the iPad and MBA with unlimited data.

It would be great if the iPhone came to Sprint. I would seriously consider switching to Sprint because of their Simply Everything Plan.

Not if T-Mobile gets bought by AT&T.

Rumor is that if T-Mobile does get the iPhone 5, the plans for that phone specifically will be the same as AT&T's plans, as T-Mobile users will end up on AT&T anyways...

If that's the case - I've always had good luck with Sprint, and the lower pricing will be a great help.

IMO, the iPhone coming to T-Mobile depends in large part on two factors-

- AT&Ts plan for the spectrum it will get from the T-Mobile acquisiton. If it is to be scrapped immediately, those phones would be worthless. If they plan on using any of it for the forseeable future, especially for HSPA+, then I would imagine Apple would throw those frequencies on it.

- If Qualcomm has a chip that is up to Apple's quality standards that can support multiple bands. T-Mobile, along with other international carriers carrying those bands, would create a few million units of iPhone sales without having to do much work.

And I'm sure there are other considerations but these are the two large issues I forsee.

iPhone 5 launch October 7

My brother works at an AT&T store and they were told October 7th as the launch for the iPhone 5

All they really need to do is put in the cheaper parts used in the iPod touch.

The Touch is too thin (the backside camer will turn into crap). The Touch also has a "Retina" Display.

Apple could tweek the Touch so it is a "hollowed out" iPhone. (similar to iPad Wifi vs. iPad Wifi + celluar modem ). I don't they are going to drop their anorexic tendencies though.

Regular LCD in place of things like the IPS display,

Apple will want to make it more affordable by using quality parts that cost less. Not throwing quality "under the bus" to get to lower costs. The 3GS screen is older so it should cost less. If there was a AMOLED of the same resolution (480x320) but better contrast/brightness and lower/same cost then they would take it. If there is nothing "better" ( contrast/brightest) and equal/lower cost to 3GS screen they would just take it to reduce costs.

smaller camera, etc.

"smaller" -- less megapixels (than the 4G's 5Mpixs but greater than 2.9Mpxis) .. sure. "smaller" -- thinner ... no. Apple can't repeal the laws of physics. Too thin means crappier pictures. Frankly, the Touch is grossly flawed in this respect.

They can easily sell that for $300.

$300 is about $50-$80 too high for the bulk of the world-wide pre-paid market.

Also, there are much more modern Android prepaid phones than the 3GS available now, like the Motorola Triumph, so they'll definitely have to bring something iPhone 4 caliber to prepaid.

Sure. They can bring the iPhone 4 to prepaid next year when the component costs have shrunk further.
