Does anyone rent a house/apartment? You can simply claim your iPhone on your renter's insurance. Which is like 100 bucks a year and usually covers up to like 15+ thousand a year.

With usually a large deductible (relative to the price of the phone)

I called my credit card co (master card). They told me accidents are not covered - theft is if I file a police report with in 48 hours or if it or if I get in a fight and it is damage that way - again a police report has to be filed with in 48 hours. so the credit card way is out. word to the wise use amex to buy your iphone. from what i hear amex covers accidental damage.

I went down and set up a personal insurance policy with my state farm agent on my macbook, iphone and nikon d80.
My agent said state farm was talking about not covering iphones.
However I would be grandfathered in it I got in now.
I am in Cali and they are still covered out here.

so that is all i know at the moment.

Just wanted to thank everyone who contributed to this thread, especially the OP. I "SquareTraded" my 16GB 3G for $699 at a total cost of $87.50 for three years, and I returned my AppleCare (it was unopened). This is much cheaper than any insurance AT&T would have offered anyway so I'm thrilled with the purchase. I wish they insured you for loss as well but I guess beggars can't be choosers, right?

Also, for anyone who wants to use the FIFTYOFF coupon, here's how you can do it. If you've purchased any kind of cheap gadget within the last 30 days (something less than $10 is perfect), just purchase a SquareTrade warranty for it. It will only cost you like 99 cents (you can even use one of the 30% off codes posted here and elsewhere to bring the cost down to 69 cents). Once you purchase that first warranty, you'll get a screen with the FIFTYOFF coupon and you can immediately go and purchase a warranty for your 3G. You'll get 50% off the entire warranty including the ADH!

I went ahead and bought this with the Accidental Damage Handling for about $122.49 (coverage for 3 years, can be cancelled and prorated at any time). MAKE SURE YOU PUT IN THE REAL NO COMMITMENT PRICING PEOPLE. at&t has announced this pricing as follows...

8GB - $599
16GB - $699

This is the actual retail cost, not the the $399 and $499 prices I'm seeing quoted. Those are "early upgrade" prices and as of yet, at&t has not made "no commitment" priced iPhones available. If you received your phone at anything less than $599, you got a discount and will not be eligible for that again for a little while.

$499 is the price that Apple charges you for if you replace your 16 gig iphone under warranty and don't send your broken phone back, so I think the $699 price you are saying is the price they would charge to buy it off the street with no contract, but if you are already under contract it would be $499 to replace it.

Id return that warranty ASAP. Unless you have a receipt saying you paid $699 they will NOT reimburse you that amount. Call and ask, all At&t receipts say the 16GB iPhone cost $300 with $200 savings, therefore ST will ONLY reimburse $500 max when push comes to shove.

I'm not returning anything until I'm 100% sure how much it would cost to replace my 16GB 3G without renewing my contract. I'm waiting for an advance replacement from Apple right now and they told me that if they don't receive my defective 3G back within 1 week, I'll be charged $499. That may mean that $499 is sufficient but I'm keeping my warranty as is until I'm 100% sure. The price is so good anyway, I'm not really that concerned.

I just purchased an 8GB Iphone 3G. I'm interested in purchasing accidental insurance through square trade.

My receipt from the Apple Store shows a $199 charge. Can purchase accidental insurance for the $399 replacement value?

Jeff

This screen capture of an email from Square Trade shows that they are pricing the iPhone 3G at $399 for the 8GB and $499 for the 16GB.

In that image^ it says a deductible applies for the accidental damage, does anybody know what that deductible is?

$50. Pretty much run of the mill for any other cell phone insurance plan that covers accidents.

This Squaretrade warranty sounds really good. Anyone know if they cover outside of the US, ie UK residents? I tried googling Squaretrade.co.uk but it just came up with some price comparison website.

State Farms cover iPhone 3G under personal article coverage at about $30/year. It even cover mysterious disappearance.

Yup!!! I just got a personal articles policy through State Farm for my new iPhone! $0 Deductible too! My agent is a genius! =)

I think what you're referring to is a PAF (or personal articles floater). It's a seperate policy that you add onto your personal lines package (however some companies like Chubb will allow you to add it onto your actual homeowner's portion). For anyone that's interested - it's major advatange is that you're not subject to your deductible (whether it be $250 or $10,000) and the covered "causes of loss" are greater than that on your homeowner's policy. Typically you itemize (independently list) each item and apply a stated amount for each - preferably you should insure it on an "agreed value" basis which ensures the company will pay no more than what it's insured for.

And State FARM (not Farms) isn't the only company that allows you to schedule computer equipment, you can do so with just about ANY standard lines company - I have a bunch of clients that have added their iphone to their PAFs - and I'd stay away from State Farm...and don't even ask me about Allstate or Geico.

FYI - If you're a business owner and use your iPhone for work you can also add it onto your BOP (business owner's policy) - again, schedule it and there's no deductible.

When I spoke on the phone to a ST rep they informed me that even if you purchase a warranty for the phone at $499 (for the 16GB lets say) and 2 years down the road you can now replace one for $299 or wutever...they will ONLY reimburse you the amount needed to place the phone at the time of replacement. Aka, not $499. Just another FYI...

All very true, but (depending on what state you live in) just make a claim against this insurance and watch your homewners rates go up up up. I have been with my company for 37 years without a single claim. I made a $600 claim on a floater policy for a camera lens and my insurance rate on my full policy went up enough to almost cover the full cost of my claim over the next 5 years. That is the one good reason for a policy from a company other then your homeowners company.

Why would you recommend staying away from State Farm?

If two years down the road the $299 iPhone will have 64GB, a user facing camera and a removeable battery, I'll take it for a replacement.

I believe the iPhone will hover around $299 to $499 for years to come, and just like computers, you will just get more features and better hardware with each new generation at the same price point.

From what I understand on their site, you pay a 3 year warranty fee for defect and such. For coverage like dropping it in the sink/toilet/cement floor/landing on it from a fall and such, you need to purchase in addition the Accidental Damage Handling coverage. Did I get that right? So thats about 125 bucks for 3 years and your phone will be covered no matter what happens to it.

Correct. Use a 50% off coupon like I did, and it drops to 62 bucks. Coverage starts a month from when you buy the warranty. Also, there is a deductible for the Accidental Damage claims (50 bucks I think)

Ooops I guess I blew it, I didn't read far enough into the threads to use it. Oh well, its still a better deal at 125 for 3 years with Accidental Damage covered vs Apple. :)
