I like the idea of titanium and sapphire too but out of principle I’m not paying 800 quid for a watch i’ll be replacing in 3 years time. They aren’t that nice and the aluminium watches have been durable enough for my usage over the past 6 years. I’d rather put that sort of money towards a mechanical that will still be relevant in a couple of decades time and will go up in value as some of mine already have.
Exactly this! I’d gladly go all out titanium but knowing Apple sunsetting 3 year old watches that are perfectly fine and not along OS upgrades just defeats the whole purpose of it.

Sticking with my S4 for now as a workouts-only device, while I enjoy my mechanical watch all other times and will always get a aluminium base Watch so I can use all the ‘tech’ inside and chuck it away when Apple turns it into a brick.

I always found the Space Gray a consistent color too. Maybe I’m just a simpleton. But I want the option for the S8.

As far as Nike goes, I don’t like the fact they now print the big “NIKE” logo on their bands. It used to be the only straight black, plain band I could get with the Apple quality.
Are you talking about the Velcro strap? because I don’t see the NIKE on the hole punch strap.

Correct. Sorry, didn’t specify. 😬

Big print didn’t used to be there.

And I still can’t believe Apple doesn’t offer a black and white version of their own. Same with silicon cases on pro phone models.

Ah okay thanks.

And yeah, it’s really irksome they took away the silver and space grey options for aluminum.

If all of this will be confirmed when the S8 will be presented, for the first time, I will stick to my current watch (AW6) for 3 years instead of 2 years which is my regular upgrade cycle.

I would love to see something really new, refreshing and intriguing.

‘Midnight’ is a disgraceful mistake.

I have a collection of black, white, grey and khaki straps - all of which look like trash next to navy or that faded-gold-plastic finish.

Space grey was always the consistent shade for those of us with conservative tastes.

I won’t upgrade until space grey Nike edition is an option again.

I agree. I also just want space grey or if that isn't an option just make black an option, but not this midnight thing where it's kinda black and kinda blue. Seems like some kind of identity crisis color.

Frankly I think Apple left some money on the table when they removed space grey from the aluminum lineup last year.

I say this not only because I wanted one, but also anecdotally I heard others skipped AW7 for this very reason. They didn’t want to spend $ on a SS model just to get a neutral grey.

Sadly I think the only remaining option is to go with an SE.

For watch, I was on a 3 year cycle. I have an AW5 and was hoping for more fitness sensors to upgrade. If this is true, there are no reasons to upgrade from a series 5, 6 or 7. What a bummer.

Disappointing. Sounds like this year is going to be even more uninspiring than last year’s update. I want to upgrade but there’s just no reason when the improvements are this anaemic.

I like this. I don't necessarily understand it for watches, but I get where you're coming from on a less 50 grand scale. This is how I feel about an IBM Model F keyboard vs, say, an Apple wireless keyboard. There's just no comparison.
I have to say I enjoyed reading this as well as about the watches from DD88. You both had me googling just to see the products you were talking about :) It's always nice to get such an unique view to what people value and where they see (and appreciate) the work of others.

I was looking forward to get my first Apple watch when the 8 comes out. I was planning to get the Titanium because in the past I’ve had some skin irritation from watch straps. It’s not a full on nickel allergy, as I’m fine with belt buckles buttons etc, but definitely something that didn’t didn’t happen when I switched to titanium/silicon mechanical watches and straps.
Huh, that's my situation exactly. I didn't jump on the last lineup for my first Apple watch, but set my eyes on the 8. In the meantime I got a Garmin Venu2 from which I quickly developed some sort of skin irritation, not quite an allergy but something akin to it. I'm hoping (possibly foolishly so) that it'd be better with the Apple watch since I'm most likely not going to wear it while sleeping. I've never had an issue with regular watches, so I'm almost certain it had something to do with wearing the Garmin watch almost 24/7.

What’s the point of making yearly updates to these devices when you can barely squeeze out any new feature? Do people really upgrade their watches every year?
Obviously some do but remember every year those that bought years ago will be sick of their slower and maybe damaged device (like me). Half a screen is getting tedious.

What if the new watches were like:
  • 41mm Aluminum - Apple Watch 8
  • 45mm Aluminum - Apple Watch 8 Max
  • 41mm SS/Titanium - Apple Watch 8 Pro
  • 45mm SS/Titanium - Apple Watch 8 Pro Max
🤯 🤯 🤯

Please don't be true.

Bummer, was hoping to find a reason to ditch my SS graphite series 7 and go back to silver SS
It seems odd that they won’t offer the flagship model in SS. I’m sure I’m not the only one that isn’t interested in titanium but is interested in having the most features.

If the SS watch gets a lame upgrade and titanium gets a sweet upgrade, I’ll wait yet another year to buy. I was planning on upgrading to S7 but I had already decided not to get the S6 when it came out, and when the S7 was announced to basically be the S6.1, I decided to hold off for the S8. If the S8 ends up being S6.2 I guess I’ll hold off for the S9 =/

Welp, guess I’m holding onto my Series 5 for another year. Was ready to throw down for titanium in the new form factor. Hard pass on paying an even higher premium for the new form in a material I don’t want, or settling for a gimmick edition to get titanium. Disappointing.
Isn’t the “extreme” edition the new form factor that is getting titanium?

We’ll have to wait to see what’s actually announced but I feel like I’m in the opposite boat as you. I want the new form factor in SS and am disappointed that the new form factor will only be available in titanium.

If SS gets a dinky upgrade and titanium gets a good upgrade, I’ll hold off for another year. I’m only interested in upgrading if there’s a noticeable bump in performance, battery life, or features, and I’m only interested in SS (or something that looks like silver SS).

Solar seems so obvious to many battery challenges and yet surprisingly not on any Apple products.
Where would you put the solar panel? Have a solar armband attached to the watch? Have tiny panels on the side of the watch? I don’t think that would be big enough to provide any noticeable battery life improvement.

Totally, I wonder about that a lot. If multiple traditional watch companies have had solar charging and motion-charging for years, maybe decades, why can’t Apple or anyone take advantage of that technology… is beyond my layman’s understanding obviously …:) but I’m hopeful for it someday.

Same design .. No new health features .. Sounds like an Apple Watch 7S to me. My guess is that all the marketing and hype will go into the 'ruggedized' version of the watch. Maybe, just maybe the ruggedized version will be the only watch to get the Apple Watch 8 designation.

I'm still on Series 1 lol. Guess I would upgrade to market place series 7 when 8 comes out.

Solar wouldn’t provide even remotely enough energy to power an Apple Watch. There’s a reason that Garmin only uses solar for their MIP display watches and not the Epix 2 with an OLED display.

It wouldn’t be worth the trade offs in my opinion.

That’s why the new Apple Watch Extreme™ will have a MIP display. :p

Is it inconceivable? Probably.
And frankly I think it would be a cool return to something more utilitarian and less flashy.

I imagine the new bigger model might not allow the prior generations of watch bands to fit the wider frame ( a silly mm) to generate new band sales.

My natural colored stainless steel Milanese 45mm watch band is coming up on two years old after the first one failed after three years because the magnet catch came apart. So if my existing 45mm band ends up being usable on the super duper top model, I might consider it. But if there is parity of feature sets, then another aluminum colored 45mm S8 model works for me.
