As good as the Apple Watch is, it can’t compete against the luxury watch sector as ‘functionality’ is not the appealing factor. People into those types of watches own them because they enjoy the aesthetics and craftsmanship. It’s a buzz that can’t really be explained unless you are passionate about it. I’m guilty of wearing my Apple Watch far too much and need to start my rotation again. I can go a day or two without an extra device showing me notifications every now and then.
Exactly this, I wouldn’t feel much wearing an Apple Watch but give me a JLC, Audemars or Vacheron and it’s like I’ve conquered the world ! 😂

What’s the point of making yearly updates to these devices when you can barely squeeze out any new feature? Do people really upgrade their watches every year?
Because this is the mindset of a lot of people (me)

I like the idea of Titanium and sapphire glass. But I'm really thinking that a more regularly replaced aluminium one makes more sense for me.

My current one (SE) is 18 months old and no scratches. If that's the norm for aluminium then I'm thinking I'll stick with that.

Maybe I've just been exceptionally lucky to date.

I like the idea of titanium and sapphire too but out of principle I’m not paying 800 quid for a watch i’ll be replacing in 3 years time. They aren’t that nice and the aluminium watches have been durable enough for my usage over the past 6 years. I’d rather put that sort of money towards a mechanical that will still be relevant in a couple of decades time and will go up in value as some of mine already have.

The design of the S7 is nice, I don’t have any issue with apple keeping it like that. But I am disappointed about the rumored colors and materials, as I am a big fan of the gold SS and black titanium. And no proper gold aluminium Watch. Bummer
I’m more bummed about the no new sensors leak. Unless you need to update, why would I ?

Same chip, same exterior, no new sensors. So same exact thing with a new name. Lol Apple ain’t even trying.
And yet, there’ll be people on here upgrading from a 7 saying how it’s changed their life, and how all previous models are obsolete(!).

I think we need to see the actual watch first. The old models were fine but its been an ongoing upgrade path. Waterproof, heart monitor, always on display, etc etc.

Oh definitely, I judge the product after the presentation, but the superlatives for (understandably) incremental updates is pretty laughable.

Weird, it’s still not a good enough upgrade to make me want to jump from my S4. I still love everything about this thing. The battery life only lasts about 12-14 hours now and it’s been beat to absolute crap but if I’m forced to replace it, I’m leaning towards a used SE at this point.

Bringing their watch line into the same situation as the iphone with 3+ years with the same design...

I just bought a refurbished 6 with the 3 year warranty on Amazon, saved $150 over the 7
the 6 will be a nice upgrade from the 3!

I don't think Tim Cook gives a damn about the cost of the building.

We have a lot of proof that Apple's productivity has been declining. Everything is delayed. Obvious and embarrassing bugs everywhere. Tim Cook wants workers back ASAP.
Those problems aren't unique to Apple can get as many engineers in office, but if the problems are related to manufacturing and sourcing wafers and chips, the engineers in California can't magic up parts.

My S7 silver colored Aluminum has no scratches and I got it for the new medical features. I want to continue with the stainless steel Milenese band. I got three years out of the first one until the magnet failed. So have almost two years on the current band.

I will look at the s8 in the silver color aluminum. There needs to be some medical feature improvement or added to entice me to upgrade.

If the new top tier model is much wider, then all the existing bands may be obsoleted. That would be a bummer......

I went from the S4 to S6 and I thought that was a worthwhile upgrade for me. The always on display was the main selling feature. I can just glace at my watch to tell the time without making some purposeful movement to see it.

I still use my S4 for work and doing something that I know could damage it. The glass is badly pitted due to me wearing it while sandblasting but other than how it looks while it's off that doesn't hurt anything.

I could get the S8 but unless it has a big feature I don't think I will. My S6 is awesome!

They need to ditch all these stupid colors. I just want silver black, white or gray. It’s something ya wear daily. It needs to be neutral. I didn’t buy a 7 cus there was no gray aluminum.
But that's the whole idea:

-Omit all the most attractive, expensive looking color options, materials and specs from the cheaper models and make all of that a premium that's reserved for the Pro models.

Like I've been saying, 2022 is the point on the AW timeline where flagship gets split in two, like we saw from iPhones in 2017 with iPhone X and iPhone 8.

All the rumors point in this direction and it's very obvious.

So the Series 8 will basically be the S7, perhaps with a body temperature sensor added. S8 chip will be a rebranded S6/S7 chip and if you like the blue or green color, you better get a Series 7 while they’re still available. The rugged model will be the one that looks a little different, but at a much higher cost.
AW Rugged/Pro will be to AW what iPhones Pro are to standard iPhones

AW Pro will have S8's SoC and same AW experience at large. But Pro will have better displays, more premium looking color options, more attractive materials, faster storage type, better battery-life, more health sensors and slightly better versions of the ones that are already in the standard S7/S8.

Pro will definitely also feature exclusive watch faces.

I'm still on my Series 4 and I don't feel like I'm missing out on a whole lot of things. Smaller bezel/bigger display in the same format is nice, as is Always On, but not enough.

For me to actually contemplate upgrading I'd need:

  • More significant improvements: blood glucose would seriously make me ponder for instance, as there is a lot of diabetes in my family
  • A refreshed SoC: not because my watch feels sluggish at all, but with every passing year, the underlying architecture of the chip gets older and older, and eventually, they'll switch to a smaller process... I'd rather get a new watch when that happens for longevity's sake
  • A Space Grey aluminium option: Always liked the darker option as there is less contrast between the screen and the casing (personal taste), and Midnight is too blue for my liking (wouldn't look good with some of my bands IMO). The M2 MacBook Air has Silver AND Starlight, and Space Grey AND Midnight, so I don't see why they couldn't keep the two most neutral colours available. If the upgrade was significant enough, I could consider a Space Black Stainless Steel, I guess, since I don't mind keeping my watch for a long time.
  • Bands would need to stay compatible: I have too many bands...
A new design would definitely sway me even more, but not paramount. I guess we'll see what the S9 will bring...

Solar seems so obvious to many battery challenges and yet surprisingly not on any Apple products.
Solar wouldn’t provide even remotely enough energy to power an Apple Watch. There’s a reason that Garmin only uses solar for their MIP display watches and not the Epix 2 with an OLED display.

It wouldn’t be worth the trade offs in my opinion.
