Two years? I got almost 3 out of my original Apple Watch and I'll be getting a full 4 out of my S4. It's starting to feel a little slow, but honestly the battery degradation is the only reason that I see to replace it. Not worth investing over $100 to replace the battery in a four-year-old watch that Apple will probably cut off watchOS support for next year.

I've always gotten the stainless steel models because it was the least expensive way to get the sapphire glass, which is well worth it. Just about everyone I know who bought aluminum scratched their display within months, often weeks. I've banged the glass of my watch against door frames, metal door knobs, and a variety of table corners without a single scratch. Well worth the premium price to keep the watch in good working condition for 3-4x as long as the aluminum models.
My aluminum S4 looks like the days I got in 2018. All depends on how you take care of things

I've got a lil dosh in the couch cushions, and like to upgrade my devices periodically. Will be replacing iPhone X to 14 (for camera). 2yo Mac Air for new one (more RAM - my fault).. But, like my 7yo iMac - my Series 3 watch is still going strong.. I 'want' to upgrade, but don't see any new features.. My series 3 still has the health sensors, HR, step tracking, messaging and all the other goodies.. I love it - and have been waiting for the release of the series 8 - but alas - nothing really compelling here to justify the spend.. (sigh) A shame really.

Or how active you are and what activities you do. It isn't like they are going to market the AW 8 Extreme (or whatever they call it) to people who just don't take care of stuff! ;)

Edit: On second thought maybe they would! A commercial just showing people accidentally bumping into stuff to an even more absurd amount than one of the previous commercials.

The AWS7 is a great design. It is a subtle change from the previous design but it's definitely better. It's just disappointing to see they are cutting down on the number of colors. The green is a great color and they should have kept it.

I think it will get better battery and one or two new features. I'm sure the new chip will make it more efficient. But it seems the big change will be the extreme version. I think that will sell out within hours of its release. It's a brand new Apple product! Of course it'll sell out. Apple will hype this thing massively and we won't care about the price and owners of a AWS4/5/6 will be extremely tempted to upgrade to that version even though many probably won't need it. Apple gonna git ya!

That’s money I save then….would have upgraded if it was the square design….no reason to change otherwise for me

A mechanical watch will always lose to a smartwatch, there is no doubt in that however it’s more about emotions. People who don’t understand watches will never know the feeling of trying on a JLC or dare I say a Patek Philippe. I went to a local jewellers pre covid and they managed to get me a Nautilus to try on, no idea how as it’s one of the most sought after timepieces now. At the time I think it was worth 50 grand and some sell for over 100 now. It’s stupid STUPID money for a watch but you wear it and you know it’s something that’s so special and you even consider doing stupid things just to get the money to own one. You know its something that’s taken thousands of hours of craftmanship and built by people who just love what they do. Wearing an Apple Watch that’s been mass produced in China with zero emotion makes me kinda sad, even though a lot of people love them if they work well , and understandably so.
I like this. I don't necessarily understand it for watches, but I get where you're coming from on a less 50 grand scale. This is how I feel about an IBM Model F keyboard vs, say, an Apple wireless keyboard. There's just no comparison. The reproduction keyboards were a passion project by one guy. He meticulously researched every aspect of the original for years (which were themselves well researched and designed by Big Blue), sought out manufacturing, tested, tweaked... and years and years later, we have awesome replicas of keyboards IBM stopped manufacturing decades ago, with all the same quality (better, in some cases, thanks to advances in materials). A lot of passion went into the creation of these keyboards and when he's done, no more will ever be made, which is a shame.

And yeah, I'm considering doing stupid things to buy both sizes and cases in every color. I have a problem. :(

What’s the point of making yearly updates to these devices when you can barely squeeze out any new feature? Do people really upgrade their watches every year?

Because not every customer is on the same purchasing schedule.

Without regular iteration and improvement, how do you move the product forwards so it has enticing new capabilities, or even just nice to have -ness, for whenever whoever wants to buy it?

Having switched over to the Apple world for computing and phones over the past two years, I was looking forward to get my first Apple watch when the 8 comes out. I was planning to get the Titanium because in the past I’ve had some skin irritation from watch straps. It’s not a full on nickel allergy, as I’m fine with belt buckles buttons etc, but definitely something that didn’t didn’t happen when I switched to titanium/silicon mechanical watches and straps.
I don’t like the sound of this larger rugged version as I have small wrists and was anyway thinking of the smaller model, and don’t need ‘pro’ features. If there won’t be a small/normal size titanium then I’m confused as what to do. The 7 titanium seems to be sold out in the UK, so either I get an expensive 8 too large titanium, or just go for aluminium and hope that Apple materials don’t irritate my skin.

‘Midnight’ is a disgraceful mistake.

I have a collection of black, white, grey and khaki straps - all of which look like trash next to navy or that faded-gold-plastic finish.

Space grey was always the consistent shade for those of us with conservative tastes.

I won’t upgrade until space grey Nike edition is an option again.
I always found the Space Gray a consistent color too. Maybe I’m just a simpleton. But I want the option for the S8.

As far as Nike goes, I don’t like the fact they now print the big “NIKE” logo on their bands. It used to be the only straight black, plain band I could get with the Apple quality.

Will be disappointing if it comes out with fewer colour options.
That will definitely be the case.

Apple's gotta push as many buttons as possible to get you to get an AW Pro, or at the very least an AW 8 in the steel finish(assuming Apple will still sell those post AW Pro launch).

Then you're never going to upgrade.

Or, you can do as Apple wants you to and get an AW Pro. Those will come in all the attractive colors and materials.

So that people who have not upgraded for a while can get the latest technology. My wife is upgrading from the S3 and is looking forward to the S8.

As a long time fan who owned the first iPhone, watch, iPod, G4 PowerMacs and more, in starting to get bored of their new releases.

Hope they innovate something truly new soon.

The standard 41mm and 45mm models of the Apple Watch Series 8 will feature the same design as the Apple Watch Series 7, according to Twitter user @ShrimpApplePro, who was first to reveal that iPhone 14 Pro models would feature a new pill-and-hole display.

Titanium will not be an option for the standard Apple Watch Series 8 models either, according to @ShrimpApplePro, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that a new higher-end "extreme sports" version of the Apple Watch Series 8 will have a titanium case, so there would still be a titanium option within the overall Series 8 lineup. The "extreme" model is also expected to have a slightly larger display compared to standard Series 8 models.

@ShrimpApplePro said their source is not aware of any new sensors on the standard Apple Watch Series 8, which will supposedly enter mass production this month.

The leaker said color options for the standard Apple Watch Series 8 will include Midnight, Starlight, Silver, and (PRODUCT)RED for aluminum models and Silver and Graphite for stainless steel models. This would be fewer colors than offered for Series 7 models, which also came in finishes like Blue, Green, Space Black, and Gold.

Apple Watch Series 8 models are expected to be announced in September alongside the iPhone 14 series. watchOS 9 should be released in September as well.

My Series 4 is going to not remain when this comes out. I held on the 7, but I can’t anymore

Same. I got a really good deal on the 4SS when the 5 came out and have not had a reason to upgrade especially with the pandemic. I was tempted with the 7 but held off. Now I will wait and see what the 8 brings or get a really good deal again on a 7SS. Probably get the 8 though.
