personally I feel like the passbook app is useless.... especially since you still need the native app. Fandango, Starbucks, or any other app that passbook can access already do the features passbook adds. Maybe if I didn't also need the app it would be cool.

If you follow the link I posted above...

You'll see that you don't even need a native app to give access to Passbook tickets. You just send out a link which loads the relevant voucher/ticket into Passbook.

Hey,
I've not seen anyone talking about this anywhere yet...
Just found this 30% discount voucher for Odeon UK with an "add to passbook" button.

http://www.odeon.co.uk/film30/

The button works when you access the site from your iPhone – it adds the ticket to Passbook. Only trouble is there doesn't seem to be any Barcode on the passbook ticket, unlike the PDF which you are supposed to print out to get scanned... doesn't seem to be fully working yet??

Cool! Too bad my local Odeon turned into an Empire Cinema! :(

I will :)
Forgot this is the Internet :D

Either way, my point is that if these new features are not implemented world wide they will not have much traction.

US is the primary market but other ones are growing really fast... as China for example and will surpass US soon for smart phones.

My point and only point is that IT PISSES ME OFF I CAN'T USE MY PASSBOOK TO BUY STARBUCKS!!!!

Fix it Starbucks
! :D

I agree with this :D

Love it so far. I use the Mobile Coupons for Target so far. Going to try it Starbucks today. Still waiting for CVS, Walmart, Dunkin Donuts, American Eagle Outfitters & Game Stop. I'm sure they'll come aboard eventually. :)

For loyalty cards, I'm still using CardStar.

awesome, passbook is a great feature for ios 6, makes me want to switch back from android

True, but at the same time, it's not been *weeks*, it's been 11 working days since iOS 6 came out. I'm pretty sure the App Store Review team have had thousands of app submitted for updates for iOS 6, iPhone 5 and so on. It might be a failure on Apple's part to cope with the amount of published apps, but it's not really their problem to make companies use it.

They demoed it and presented their vision twice on stage. Whoever did not see the potential in that (company-wise) is probably really stupid. It might take a bit of time to get it sorted.

And also, the reason there's no iPhone 5 support is because of the way they treat newly published apps. If one adds a splash screen image for iPhone 5, the minimum OS required has to be iOS 6. Hence the companies/developers that don't have iPhone 5 support yet are trying not to lock down their iOS 5 customers.

Just because it's optimised for iPhone 5 doesn't make it iPhone 5 only.

It's a cool feature but for someone like me that's using iOS 6, isn't it totally redundant? Why add my Starbucks card to Passbook, when I have the Starbucks app? Am I supposed to use Passbook instead and dump the Starbucks app all together?

I downloaded the starbucks app, put money on a card in the app. Now How do i get it to show in passbook? When i open passbook, it still shows the default screen.

Canada here. I updated my starbucks apps this morning and didnt get the passbook support?

The point is not having to manage multiple apps. Its one location where yours cards live. Its like a wallet.

I'm not exactly sure what some of you don't seem to understand. Yes, the Starbucks app has the same ability to scan your card and pass through your iPhone.

The benefit of using Passbook is that you don't need to go through the multitude of applications to find Starbucks, or Target, or American Airlines, or whatever, to view your card. You simply open passbook and all of your cards are right there.

The difference is like this:

Option 1: You have four credit cards, one in each pocket of your jeans.
Option 2: You have a wallet for all of your credit cards.

Which one is easier, more organized, and more convenient?

Yes, right now, it's simply a system to aggregate all your digital passes/cards/voucher/etc., in a single UI, but it does provide UI consistency, and some functional hooks (like lock screen notifications).

Since a "pass" is just a content type, you can push them in from any source, so like a few folks mentioned, you could send a pass from an email, URL, etc.

I think ultimately, we'll see something more like the newsstand app, where passbook compliant apps reside "inside" of Passbook itself, and the API will have payment systems integrated (so you'll be able to charge against a single transaction ID, like your Apple ID).

FYI, I wrote up a little review of the passbook process (with screen shots), here in the iOS6 section, Passbook thread (starting on post #369):

Say what you will about Starbucks but this is cool technology. Glad to see a huge company is taking advantage of it.

Used it this morning. Worked like a champ. Popped up on my lock screen when I got to one of my usual stores. Passbook also worked on my last American Airlines flight. So far, so good on Passbook.
