Starbucks Adds Passbook Support to Its iPhone App

personally I feel like the passbook app is useless.... especially since you still need the native app. Fandango, Starbucks, or any other app that passbook can access already do the features passbook adds. Maybe if I didn't also need the app it would be cool.

You need the app to create the pass. Once it is there you can delete it if you want (the app.)

How often does it ping the gps. I have a feeling the battery life will be hit! Is there a way to deactivate the location pinger?

Well the cool thing about passbook would be the location awareness .. so when you are in the vicinity of a Starbucks, it automatically adds the Starbucks Pass to the homescreen and lets you open it with a single swipe. So there is no need to unlock the phone and search for the app and the code anymore.
However .. I am not sure I am willing to have my phone constantly check my position, seems a like a sure way to drain the battery to me (privacy issues aside).

it doesn't ping gps

the satelites and towers are always transmitting their locations and the phone just does some math to figure out where it is in relation to the tower/satellite

most of the apps already do this though. For example, I have been using the fandango app for months and it already has this built in. A notification will come on the lock screen that you just slide to and the ticket is there.

Starbucks App NOT Passbook Integrated!

....well not here in UK anyway! How did they manage that? The update for ios6 appeared in the UK AppStore yesterday, but there's no mention of Passbook anyway and it's not in the folder (Some of the reviews left by users are pretty frank to say the least!).

Not the end of the world obviously but really would have been nice to have tried out a bit of the new functionality and rather strange given the US ios6 update DOES work in Passbook, and given the fact that it was advertised by Apple as being in Passbook.

Perhaps cut and paste doesn't work on the UK/US Starbucks App Developer's Mac?

It doesn't automatically go into Passbook. When in the app, and you select the card, a pop up message should appear asking if you want to include in passbook.

Keep in mind that I am in the US and this is how it worked for me.

The venue has to support Passbook as well. That's why only about four MLB teams support it. You have to have the right scanners. Starbucks upgraded theirs when they started allowing payments via phone a year or so ago. I think it's sorta based on QR technology instead of just plain bar codes.

That explains why it isn' showing up. Thanks for clarifying. WHere did you find that out? It sounds like you know some rules about Passbook I've yet to find in my measured searches for more information about Passbook and its intricacies.

As I said, the US App is Passbook integrated so it will come up in the list.
Doesn't work with the UK version.

Go to the card you want to add to Passbook and click on the Manage button. You should have an option within the list to add the card to Passbook.

If that isn't there, then yes, you are right, it's not fixed in the UK. I'm in the US and I got the popup the poster above you mentions, but I actually had to add it by using the manage button.

I had my passbook in a folder with my apps that use it and the Starbucks passbook would not load (when I clicked send to passbook it did not generate the card). I needed to move the passbook back out of the folder and it loaded in fine. I hope that helps someone.

Passbook is useless to me until I can scan my own coupons, store cards, etc. and have them replicated for the app. I feel like we were led to believe it would do that anyway.

To make it perfect.... NFC? :D

Yeah the whole scanning thing is retarded. I use google wallet at so many places as it works with the existing mastercard paypass, amex expresspay, visa paywave infastructure which most modern credit card machines support. You'd be surprised how many places take these.

Even better. I was wondering about that. But kind of scary. If I lose my phone someone could use my Starbucks card (which has autoload on it) without my passcode. I suppose my potential liability would be limited if I acted fast to disable the autoload and/or wipe my phone.

Just dont loose your iPhone. Besides, if you do, something tells me that you will probably be more upset about loosing your $300 phone compared to your $10 starbucks card.

I guess I don't quite get Passbook. I have the Starbucks app, updated it, launched it, and added my Starbucks card to Passbook, and even added my "favorite" stores to the app, so it know, but when I launch Passbook, I don't see my Starbucks card, balance info, etc. Nothing. Do I have to be in a Starbucks for it to show up in the Passbook app like a cool little wallet card, or has it just not updated yet?

I'll see your confusion and raise you one latte. I did everything you described AND went to the Starbucks I had added to favorites. Nothing from passbook. Nada.

Why go to iOS6 or iPhone 5 then?

Updated to support Passbook and iOS 6, but not iPhone 5?

I can't believe all of the people that have upgraded their iOS either on an older iPhone or bought the new iPhone. I'm holding out because of native trainsit directions personally. If Apple doesn't include transit directions I will never upgrade my iOS, even if that means going to Android. And from what I hear transit directions is only the beginning of a long list of things that are wrong with the new iOS. If we keep supporting Apple and their broken products, they will continue to make broken products.

I don't have that option in settings. I got the popup asking me if I wanted to add my card to Passbook but after I tapped yes I also don't see anything in Passbook. I gotta say, Passbook is very disappointing compared to how they demo'd it at WWDC. I thought we would be able to scan our store cards and all the necessary info would automatically be imported. Oh we'll, I just hope it gets better.

Couldn't agree more. I thought Passbook would be a standard, not a place to aggregate the products of other apps. Thought by contracting with Apple to enable this service, a company would allow Passbook itself to scan/enter its coupons. Not require a separate app.

I'm sure someone will make an app that does that soon.
