Sigh. Yet "one more thing" I disagree with Apple on.

That thing is an absolute disgrace to the memory of Steve Jobs and I'd be pissed if I had to walk past it on my way in to work. There is simply no excuse for them picking that over all the effin' art in the world.

Steve's Apple really did die with him. I swear this feels like "The Departed".

Someone is inside sabotaging the company from within, while pretending to be the good guy.

One of the objectives of great art is to provoke conversation. By that metric, this work has succeeded wildly based on the comments.
I'm pretty sure that isn't supposed to include conversation provoked because the artwork is so uncompromisingly ugly and disrespectful to the person it's supposed to honour that everyone who sees it hates it.

Apple's whole image is on slick, stylish designs; slapping something that runs contrary to that down as a memorial hurts that image.

I'd argue that the Mac Pro is a much better memorial, as it makes hard compromises but is undoubtedly a slick and surprisingly functional design. This statue is the opposite; if someone put something like that up in memorial to me then I'd do everything in my power to haunt them for the rest of their life.

The head is actually well done and a fitting tribute to him.

You need to have a very wild imagination to see any resemblance to Steve. That head could look like any of millions of people if you were told who it is. The mind is fairly good at creating something from nothing or seeing that which is not there.

It appears that someone at Apple has been sold a pile of junk, being convinced by a bunch of moronic snobs that it has value.

Steve Jobs as Pez dispenser?

This kind of post war "brutalist" artwork never quite caught on in the States for good reason, it is ugly as hell. To Apple execs, why?

I'm going to reserve my opinion about the statue for now (it's quite the contrary from most of the posts here), but here's a video with a more detailed view of the maquette.

Unfortunately, the story doesn't make that pile of junk look any more attractive. The hype is no more than a tool used to convince rich people to fork over their cash.

The readers of MacRumors are not exactly the most open-minded set when it comes to accepting things that don't fit their narrow expectations. Note the number of people who think it should have looked like an Apple product!

I am pretty sure reactions will be pretty much the same outside MacRumors.

If you look at the symbolism, it's about conquering imperfections.

Steve Jobs is above the imperfections (0, 1, letters) so it is tribute to him and his achievements.

dios mio what kind of "Dali" bs is that jajaja

also kinda reminds me of George Bushes had on a stick on Game of Thrones

How is it disrespectful? And in terms of Apple's image, I think you're confusing art with industrial design. I think you miss the point here.

The style of this statue (art) is a great style to depict the horrors of war, holocaust, or affects of drug abuse… not how you would depict one of the great minds of the 21st century.

Hate it… I hope Apple does not accept this commission.

Yup… I'm missing the point for sure! :)

this is what we want, plain and simple

no useless hyperbole or veiled cyrillic metaphors for his cancer

a simple bust, of a great man

This should be the statue they make.

Nuff said.

Actually he wouldn't. It doesn't follow Apple's simplistic design. He'd never want that. Should have let Ive design something.

hah - you know he was never into himself so i would say no statue would be better than a statue.

Mmm... PEZ.

The overwhelming majority says otherwise. This isn't art. This piece doesn't invoke any positive feelings of the man or his legacy... nor does it symbolize Apple's design ethic (much less Steve's). It looks cold and void of emotion. How this unimaginative piece of garbage got chosen from 10,000 entries is beyond me. I can't even imagine having to walk by this thing every day. It's horrifying, to be quite honest... and it's going to be 15 feet tall. You can't sit there with a straight face and tell me there aren't about a million other statues that could've been made that would've been far more appropriate and pleasing to the eye and a respectful nod to Steve than this thing. I still can't believe this isn't a joke. This statue literally looks like Monster Steve.

haha - you know we all see things differently. I know for a fact there would be more aesthetically pleasing statues than this piece but since when is apple about appealing to the masses?

in fact this is very apple like.

Weird thing about art is that it depends on taste. I like and understand art enough and consider this bust a POS artistically. Why don't you enlightening us w/ your knowledge on why it's beautiful from an art perspective? I bet you are a sucker for those new Gehry works of 'art' too.

i admit - it's not the most beautiful piece but neither was steve job's life.

gehry has amazing architectural designs in his buildings.

why don't you like them?

I wonder who amongst the executives made the comment about liking imperfections in a statue to an icon that was all about achieving perfection.

I think those imperfections are symbolic. Although the body is made of imperfections his head is put at the top above the imperfections which means he is and thinks above them. He then translates his higher thinking into beautiful apple products.... well, at least when he was still alive. Just an idea, art is interpretable.
