The post above yours is proof, that people actually expected to be free.
And Valve is clear about it, too, but some people don't seem to be reading it carefully:

"So you only have a few days to decide if your free copy of Portal is worth the price we're currently charging"
Point taken. However, this is just about the best advertisement Valve could do. I would never have downloaded Steam had it not been for this promotion. I do not game, but I have nothing to lose by trying Portal for free.
It also doesn't hurt that I finished my last final yesterday.![]()
Free Portal is worth it.
I might be able to pick up Civilization IV since I have the Windows copy already.
Erm, no.Try doing that in Windows, once you're in full screen, you have to quit the game to do anything else there!![]()
Got it. Downloading Portal now.
Only I problem I've found so far:
A. Their server is getting hammered
B. Expose glitch
So...the LAST reason to remotely think about keeping a PC at home is GONE now.
I am not a heavy gamer but must congratulate Valve for keeping its word; you guys will now see how profitable it is to cater to the loyal Mac community, especially at a moment when Apple DOMINATES every corner of the market.
MS IS DEAD. AND SO IS GOOGLE.

C. Spaces glitch

2 million during the day time hours is pretty normal on Steam.http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

Apple's limited hardware choices have made the platform useless for me when it comes to gaming. I don't see a reason to continue expending my money on a futile effort.So...the LAST reason to remotely think about keeping a PC at home is GONE now.

Can't we have a thread without some BS from you?
Nah, yours is FAST, i have 20mb broadband (thats fast in the UK lol)and mines only going at 600kb/s
Im getting an error when i try to launch steam saying
" Steam could not create directory /users/name/Library/Application Support/Steam"
Then right after that error another saying
"Steam requires (above directory) be created on a case insensitive filesystem, with read-write access"
2 million during the day time hours is pretty normal on Steam.
Please identify the BS, please. You mean my trademark statement or you just can't agree with facts?
Very excited about Steam finally being available for Mac.
Now people won't have to ridicule Mac users anymore for not having any games![]()
Downloading my free copy of Portal at the moment, taking a rather long amount of time, not reaching my max. download speed by a long shot. < Figures alot of Mac users are eager to download this stuff right now
Also downloading the Torchlight demo, if you haven't noticed yet, it's 50% off for the full game, but I'd like to try the demo first, before I buy anything.
So what's the dealio? Do I have to keep the Steam app open in order to play their games? Or can I launch Portal as a normal Mac app without passing by Steam?
ONLY 5 HOURS TO LOAD!
....wtf... and I have speedy DSL. Must be a lot of users clogging up their servers or something.
You MUST login to steam to access the games. You can create shortcuts to the games, but they will open steam if it isnt open already.
Thanks; not exactly ideal, but fair enough if the service is good...and it seems like it is.
