Oh holy frikken Jesus, after having numerous poor quality calls today despite "5 bars" of signal I now call the girlfriend up only to find out I can't hear her - the reason? My ear touched the "mute" button - I've heard people saying the proximity sensor is crap and now I experience it for myself... That seals it, phone goes back next week - HTC Desire it is. My 3G did everything I wanted it to, this phone has unfortunately been crap as a phone though great with the "toys", Steve got his priorities wrong.

I'm with you buddy, proximity sensor, reception issues, I'm gonna hold out for the Droid X on Verizon.

I have had the original, 3G, and iPhone 4.

If you see the videos, you will see one of them demonstrates that when held the same way as the 4, data slows down to a crawl. What is being experienced on the 4 has been experienced on the previous versions of the older iPhones. Yes, the external design makes the signal strength be more sensitive like anandtech's report stated, but this is not a unique issue with the 4.

what does any of that have to do with the iP4 dropping calls when previous versions didn't?

I need to get a life? How? I bring evidence to the table and you dismiss it. It seems like you just want to bash Apple and no one is going to get in your way.

You bring evidence to the table that has nothing to do with the problem - when have I complained about data rates, or even signal strength in itself? This is about dropped calls, basic cell phone functionality. Why are you deliberately trying to obfuscate the conversation with irrelevancies?

Boy, what asses and fools are WE, lowly beings that we are, to expect that an iPhone might actually function as a phone! So sorry for all of our non-issues, Steve...we won't bother you again, we promise...are you there, Steve? Hello? Oh, damn...was holding the phone in my left hand.

And wanking with your right....

If that's your only beef, I'd hold off on returning it. THAT is a simple firmware fix.

Nah, in about a dozen phone calls I've had one drop and about 5 or 6 mention that I sound "very crackly" - am just holding phone naturally in right hand, not usually on the black band but either side with last two fingers... The "mute" is the icing on the cake as I'm just embarrassed by it now, my friends keep asking if they should text rather than call! :D

Exactly. If everyone bitching and moaning about the phone would just return it, I'm SURE Apple and Jobs would do something to fix any issue there might be, as that would directly impact the company's profits.

If everybody bitching and moaning would just return it, the wait might be shorter for all those purchasers on backorder. And since demand is so much higher than the current production rate, Apple's profits will be pretty much stay the same.

Chaz, try to remember, you're dealing with children here.
Actually, in that screen-shot steve's hand is not totally bridging the phone from front to back and if that were an iP4 there would not be a complete bridging of the antennae so your whole endeavour was a complete waste of time.

Jobs' stance on this issue is completely unacceptable. While I do feel that some people may be taking this issue a bit too far, there is definitely a problem with the new iPhones which needs to be addressed. My husband and I both bought new iPhones. Mine has some signal loss, but it is completely usable, and I am very happy with it. My husband's phone, on the other hand, can barely keep a signal when he holds it and that's with a case on the phone!!! He can't use the thing half of the time cause it so f'd up, and Apple doesn't think this is a problem!?!?!?!?!?!

In the end, since my husband got no help from Apple, he returned his phone and has a 3Gs. Now, we're both pissed off cause he wants a new phone, all the other AT&T phones suck, and I don't want to go to Verizon. Thanks Apple!!!

"Not worth it. It's just a phone."

Steve is such a thoughtless d-bag. What about those of us who earn a living with our phone. I'll be sure to let my clients know that when our calls get dropped.

Sent from my POS iPhone 4

And why are you attempting to use a phone that isn't working for you to handle clients? Is that the best business decision for you? Was the iPhone 4 the only phone available when you went to purchase your phone, and your older one also broken? If I was a traveling salesman, and just bought a nice, shiny Lexus that broke down every 10 miles and made me consistently late to meetings with clients and cost me those sales, AND I knew before purchasing the Lexus that most of that model had the problem, would if be a very smart "business decision" to have purchased that car for business use?

And that only proves that people are a bunch of koolaid drinking sheep.

It's "just a phone" but it won't even function as a phone. I think anyone who spent $200 on a phone that doesn't work has every right to be pissed.

First thing is first. It does function as a phone and rather well for me. The only place I lose signal is hampstead where EVERYONE loses signal. No dropped calls for me. Maybe I am lucky, maybe I hold my phone differently...god knows. I have 3 other friends with the Iphone who again don't have any issues with theirs.
I rely on my phone for business and have found it very reliable. Battery life is superb, camera is amazing (I have a son and take constant pictures/videos), 32gb of storage, invoice applications, Screen is amazing and above all I can make and receive calls perfectly well.

You are a big fan of android which is a lovely OS. I haven't seen a phone that I wanted YET, but if I did I would consider it. Saying that I believe the android phone that ANAND did his test on suffered the same problem? Wasn't as bad I admit, but still suffered it. Are you going around slaughtering that phone or do you have that phone?

By your standards am I a fanboy? I purchased my first mac computer 4 years ago after being a pc man for years......the thought of changing OS scared the hell out of me, but now I will only purchase a MAC.
I was on blackberry before Iphone and one day I may be an android user. Who knows? Tell me which smartphone out there gives me everything that my Iphone does right now? AND MINE DOES MAKE CALLS FINE before you use that argument.

Ps. I am tired of hearing how flash is coming to Android next month.....I've been hearing that for a year now .

A few thoughts:

1. Someone should take away Steve Jobs ability to email.
2. People saying its new they have to figure it out. They probably had a working prototype for 6 month to a year and the creation of the big rubber bumper leads me to believe they knew this was a problem.
3 for the just return it crowd, att charges you for that. I forget the amount I think its like $30.Which hurts when the reason your returning it is the phone doesn't work.
4. The problem apple will have is not here this is the choir. Its the regular people who were thinking of getting one, Steve comments are going to be a big turn off to them.
5. About being honored to have Steve write him back. Actually if it wasn't for the customer, Steve would be working in a surf shop by the beach. So its Steve who should be grateful. When I worked for Mercedes Benz they drilled into our heads without the customer we are nothing. They were right and Apple forgot that.

So you're disparaging a group that you are clearly part of?

No, I'm not disparaging any group or personal choice. I'm just saving myself the $499 AT&T phone upgrade price and unnecessary STRESS with the controversial Iphone 4. My 3Gs works beautifully. Happy to wait until Iphone 5. It's called delayed gratification. ;)

Makes me wonder, did the fanboys show up on the Toyota websites to defend their defective products too?

Funny seeing both sides of the fence really getting worked up.

Well actually, it's just funny to see the people who are telling people to just relax get worked up. I like hearing folks telling people to "calm down" in a not-so-calm manner.

*Cue Alanis Morisette's "Ironic" chorus*

...only in weak signal areas. In strong signal areas (well above -90 dBm), you can hold it any way you want, as they did in the photos.

Or do you expect a company to demo a cell phone somewhere where there is lousy coverage?

When held like that in a low signal area, does that constitute calling it "gripping it like a fu*kin retard"?

I'm curious whether people who can not reproduce the problem have used the phone in locations served by different towers and separated by some miles.

I live in northern Maryland (around Union Bridge), and at home I have 4 to 5 bars of signal (although now I know that doesn't mean much). At home, I can not hold the phone in my left or right hand w/o encountering the problem; I always disconnect when I hold it in my left hand. I don't have a case yet (its on order) but if I put a thick towel in my hand and hold the phone, in my left hand, I might lose a bar of signal, but I never disconnect.

Last weekend I went into DC (about 65 miles to the south) and traveled around the city a bit. In certain locations I had 5 bars of signal and could not recreate the problem, no matter what I did. However, 5 or 6 blocks away, I would experience the problem, and would disconnect.

Beats me. I think that those of you that have not experienced the problem very well might, when you travel some distance. Would be curious to know if your feelings about the product change if that happens.

I would like to keep this phone for a number of reasons (I like the OS better than DROID; I like many of the apps; I like syncing through Mobile Me; I like supporting the innovation at Apple). But I am angry at the way Apple is handling this, and I do feel deceived by the advertising.

On a related issue, anyone have a blue tooth headset to recommend with the iPhone 4.

I'm guessing that he's developing an Apple-branded wi-fi/3G hotspot. Because it's obvious he's not going to admit the phone's design is flawed. So you're expected to buy a crappy phone and then fork out $200 on a hotspot plus $29 for a bumper.

Not if it's defective. At least the two corporate stores in my area won't charge you this fee if it's proven defective and repeatable. And this problem certainly is repeatable to the handsets affected. At least mine is when not using it inside a case. I can reproduce it at will.
