I must have missed that - do you have a link?

When I talked to the Apple Expert last Friday they said they knew about the problem and were working on it - that's as official an  statement as I have.
It's better than an email, but until someone goes on the record or there is something at Apple's official website, it's not official in any meaningful way.

Steve Jobs Responds to Email on iPhone Antenna Problem

THESE AREN'T THE DROIDS YOU'RE LOOKING FOR.

Steve

This is what it comes down to. A few people are having issues that actually affect them. Then the videos come out. Now people grab the iPhone in ways they wouldn't of normally and yell about it losing signal strength. Remember the days of the iPhone was perfect and it was AT&T... now there is something else to blame.

Jobs knows as well as some of us clear-headed members that it does exist, however, the overreaction is ridiculous. It's like the Toyota debacle, it affected some cars but not all, however, people severely reacted over the issue. Luckily, out of safety Toyota recalled many vehicles to make sure that people didn't die. The iPhone isn't going to kill you and if you go back to Apple, they are replacing the iPhone for you. I guarantee if those few videos didn't come out it wouldn't of been a big deal and half of us wouldn't of even known about it. I know for the first 24 hours I had it (pre-ordered so barely anyone had it) I noticed no issues. Now I can replicate it by squeezing the fire out of it but on a day-to-day basis it would never happen.

Y'all should be thankful Apple is even trying; after half the posts on this forum about this crap I wouldn't even email you guys back if I was SJ, let alone be respectful.

i've never seen so many ignorant apple fanboys. wow, seriously? This is no 'minor' deal, when your phone call/or web surfing stops because you're holding the phone a certain way is a big effing deal. I don't have this issue with my iPhone 3G.

I did. The iPhone 3G's connection will also stop working if you are in an area with a signal only 9 dBm above the minimum, and grab it too tightly. In one office building, my iPhone 3G only worked if I held it upside-down over my head with two finger. Verizon BB's worked much better there.

I know of a few people who returned their 2G and 3G's (and GSM Nokia's) because the AT&T coverage was just too weak at their home or office.

It's the same with the i4. No major deal. You have bad coverage for that particular combination. Try a different carrier or cell phone. Maybe switch to Verizon?

They might be implying that an e-mail from the CEO - from his corporate account - is an official statement. Which I'm inclined to agree with.
Except that it cannot be verified. Steve hasn't gone on the record with anybody to corroborate that nor has that filtered down to Apple's website or it's retail outlets. If it was anything official, we would be hearing about it from formal channels and not some one-on one email from Steve Jobs.

Believe me, if was anything official, someone from Apple would have verified this by now.

At the end of the day, people are going on at the people who don't use the phone the way Jobs did in the keynote and trying to belittle those who hold it differently

Still trying to figure out why you would hold yours the way you do - did you start out on a flip phone? If the phone was folded in half you would be holding it about where the center of gravity would be - did your phone holding habits start with a flip phone? Would explain some of why you hold it so far off the center of gravity.

Why does everyone hold it from the bottom where you are gripping 20% of the phone....

try moving the hand up..Its alot more natural.

....no problems really with my phone.

If you'd read my posts before commenting you'd see that I have no signal issues in a full 3G area, and was showing how I comfortably hold my phone while having an optimal signal.

The mobile phone I had longest was a Motorola Razr V3, so you may be onto something.

But he has said there is 'no problem' to some, 'we're working on it' to others, and 'stay tuned'.

An official statement would be on the Apple website - everything else is hearsay.

That's interesting. Everyone that I know that thought they had a phone without the issue found their phone to have the issue when they touched the problem area in signal areas where I get the problem. And, on the other hand, where I go to where they initially used their phones and thought they had no problem my phone does not appear to drop its signal.

So you are saying that in places with bad cellular signals people get bad reception.

Gotcha.

Oh yea, but usually people take their phone back because they didn't think it was going to be as good as they thought. But in this case you got a million phones that have the same issue. Take it back or wait for them to fix this?

1.7 million+ phones with this potential issue. BUT, I'll bet that the majority of those customers have more than -85 dBm of signal where they make calls, or use a nice case, or bought a bumper, or have read cell phone instruction manuals and thus don't grab their cell phones around the bottom.

Given that some analysts think that Apple could have sold up to 2.5 million units the first weekend, that means it would take around 800,000 returns before the supply exceeded the demand.

And Apple's is getting all this extended free publicity for the i4, where everybody is spelling Apels iName kerrecktlee.

Bonus.

See that explains a lot - I've always had 'candy bar' phones.

I would like to observe that if that is indeed the what formed your phone holding habits then the might just be the natural tendency is to hold a phone at its center of gravity in the beginning and all of us tend to carry however we 'got in the habit' forward.

We should all be able to hold our phones the way that make us comfortable - if this one needs a bumper then it should come with one for those that want it. This could all be solved by 'black or white bumpers free' to those that want them and save the pretty colored ones for upgrades if they still want an additional profit center.

But not admitting error? I'll stick with the duct tape until its clear  is going to do nothing, return it and use my upgrade credit to pick up the 'stealth fix' in a few months. The 3GS really does nicely with iOS 4 and as has been said if we don't return it Steve won't learn a thing by his approach to this problem.

My phone is getting worse and worse. The 3G signal isn't good at all. I'm so frustrated. I have a case on it too. All day i haven't been able to access 3G quickly. It's worse than Edge speeds. I'm home now and i've used 3G in my house when my Wi-Fi has been out and it worked fine. There have been times i've been home and was using 3G on accident and was shocked how fast in was in my home. NOW NOTHING WILL LOAD. I'M FURIOUS. Sorry...but there is something different with this phone for sure. I'm going to call AT&T now.

EDIT: OK So i called AT&T. I feel much better. I think reading so much negative stuff got me pissed. They said there have been tower problems in my area all day. She said in about an hour it should all be resolved. :)

Yeah ok..lol...keep waiting on that one...lol

A touch hypocritical when every single "hater" on here is proclaiming that the way Jobs holds the phone in the keynote, which incidentally cuts off the signal, is the way everyone holds their phone.

At the end of the day, people are going on at the people who don't use the phone the way Jobs did in the keynote and trying to belittle those who hold it differently ... "Princess" comment ring a bell? It's hypocrisy.

At the end of the day, people come here to bitch about Apple now. They don't sign up here to discuss new products, they come here to run down Apple products at any opportunity regardless of how warranted it is.

I'm by no means a fanboy. I love Apple products, I enjoy Apple products, and I've been buying Apple products for a decade now from all their markets (Mac, iPod, and now iPhone).

Honestly though, it's getting tiresome on here now. Some people just want to argue, want to moan, want to bitch, want to complain, and seem to "live" for their daily dose of "Apple Fanboy Battering".

I support Glasgow Rangers, but I wouldn't go to a Glasgow Celtic forum and post. I see no point in coming on a Apple/Mac forum if you're main objective is to bitch about Apple and their products.

Please explain your theory on the difference between complaint/bitch.....

While some take this as a hint that a fix is coming in the near future, I think it's simply an Apple in-joke. They mean "stay tuned" as in "don't detune the antenna by touching it". The "fix" will simply be a pamphlet entitled "Stay tuned" with instructions on how to hold the phone.

Or it could mean i hopefully can hold them off until their return date has passed...hmmmmm

Don't know about standing under a cell tower but I was in my car parked in the driveway with 5 full bars and when I held it in my left hand it would go down to one bar, then searching, then no service. I could replicate it over and over. I was holding it normally. I know how to hold a ****ing phone. The videos are right on the money.

No need to start name calling because it will get you banned but if that works for you then good. Don't get pissy at people because their iPhone works okay?

Because it's real hard to feel bad for someone who calling people names. If your iPhone is not working then take it back or wait for a fix.

But don't insult me or others because i'm not going to apologize that mine works. And i feel bad for you and others that you let your life become consumed with a electronic device. Life is too short and iPhones will come and go but life will only go.

+1

Makes me feel better about keeping my 3GS and unlimited data plan. :D

I agree ;) I noticed last month I used 398GB (every month before was under 300 never over) highest month overall. Seems since my ios4 upgrade I been using more data.

Well the phones are all faulty, some are blind to it (the radiant light of Saint Jobs in their eyes) but at the end of the day all will have signal issues if they're not lucky with the area coverage lottery - in addition the proximity sensor doesn't work and you will mute the phone with your ear if you're not careful. Oh, and the "vibrate" mode is ineffective to say the least, I don't feel it in my pocket or hear it on a table.

Many WILL be returning the phone but we're waiting on an update from Apple - they've got about a week for most of us.

If you're smug enough to think your phone is perfect so the rest of us must be idiots then good for you.

See, that's the thing. I've never once denied there's an issue ... I've simply stated that it doesn't affect me personally due to the nature of how I hold my handset.

That doesn't mean I think it shouldn't be fixed, but in normal use I don't go out of my way to "avoid" the black line on the bottom left, and it's perfect ... for me. I'm not arrogant enough to think, "Well I'm fine, screw everyone else".

As for having a Mac in 1984, that's neither here nor there. My first Mac was a G4 iMac, this isn't a competition to see who got into Apple first and is therefore more entitled to bitch and complain.

Complaining about a product people are disappointed with is natural. But there are a hell of a lot of people on here who probably don't even own Apple products, have never used Apple products, yet come on here to get involved because they "hate" the company based on hearsay and opinions of others.

Which has nothing to do with me and to me the fanboy support of Apple over a defective product is more irritating - we've had the non-Apple user haters forever - this is about Apple screwing over previously loyal Apple supporters.

Still trying to figure out why you would hold yours the way you do - did you start out on a flip phone?

Interesting that you mention the point about mechanical shape. They center of the keypad on the iPhone is much higher that the center of the keypad on my Samsung flip phone, Nokia bar shaped thing, or Palm Treo. My favorite Favorites are even higher.

So maybe I'm holding the iPhone even higher than with those previous phones, nearer the center of the keypad, so that key pokes don't cause it to rock.

Apple HAS commented officially. You and others aren't satisfied with the response. More satisfying comments may or may not be forthcoming."

I too am interested in their public response -- I know we got the leaked Apple Customer Support doc, but I don't recall anything official. If they did and I'm mistaken, please forward a link - I think another member has already requested this.

I can handle my reception issues at home for another week to see if anything changes -- I would much prefer to do this then, return the phone, revert back to my old phone, find that Apple does address it with a fix, then have to go through the purchasing again... That seems like an awful lot of work.

I'm really not as upset as some, and me being upset is more because people that don't have the issue act like we're overreacting and Apple hasn't come out with an official response -- but maybe I'm wrong about that - and please point me to it if they have responded.
