How is what Google is doing undermining Apple? Because they are trying to make a better product and rely on their services vs Apple's? I don't understand your thinking here. What is illegal? Apple seems scared itself to ask Google not to implement multitouch in the native Nexus One apps. I'm sure Google wants to get along with Apple, but Mr. Stevo never seems to get that and tries to smash the competition (nothing wrong with that). I think you have your companies flip-flopped.

Why buy an iPad this summer if their is a new iPhone coming out? All the hardcore fans prob already switched to 3GS and those contracts are not up, so are we going to have to choose between new iPhone or iPad? Either way we will get 4.0!

I've switched to the "new" iPhone each year, and I'm still eligible for upgrade on 6/30/2010.

Guess I pay my bill.

Flash buddy and crashes Mac? Blu-Ray not widespread?

"Dear Steve

As an avid Mac user and owner, please get your head out of your ass on the Flash and BlueRay situation. 10's of millions of people use them at the moment, so support the fecking software! If HTML5 wins long term, good, but it is not that way today."

I hope Apple's success is not going to turn to total arrogance, it will be the death of them if so....

I love the honesty that he displayed and I agree 100% about browser crashes caused by Flash. Every single time Safari or Firefox crashes its because of Flash (On my machine). I hate flash so much and cannot wait for HTML5 to take over for online video which is where I view Flash 99% of the time.

Why stop at Flash.

Adobe is lazy and that is why flash sucks.

Why stop here, being a graphic designer, all Abobe products have been bloatware for years. Stop adding features Adobe and just make software that works. If I could go back to Illustrator 8 I would, but vendors don't support it anymore.

Right on, Steve.

But wasn't Steve originally quoted as saying Google's policy of "Do no evil" is "bull****" ??

This news on Neowin has him saying that at the same meeting.

http://www.neowin.net/news/steve-jo...m_campaign=Feed:+neowin-all+(Neowin.net+News)

Google can't kill the iPhone because it isn't Apple. Completely different attitudue and philosopohy about tech in Cupertino. And it's the right one to have. Google is just a federated company. And it shows.

As for Adobe:

Don't think they're lazy? Jiuat have a look at thelat couple of versions of their Creative Suite. That slow bloatware is getting worse with the passage of time. And what happened to a proper OS X interface? Adobe *is* lazy. Period.

With so many of the interactive learning tools based on Flash, I ask where is the HTML 5 tools that will jump in tot fill the gap?

Exactly. Flash is used now because it's easy to develop multimedia content for the most browsers.

To change that, there must be an easy and widespread alternative method, and that calls for an HTML5 authoring tool that works on Macs, PCs and Linux computers.

Otherwise, there will no doubt be competing ads showing other new tablets with Flash ability vs the iPad's lack of it ("Can your tablet do that?").

Errr, you do realize that Apple is hardly making any money from the iTunes music/video store. Apple makes their money from iPods. As for unlocking iPhone/iPad, you probably meant jailbreaking as the iPad is going to be sold unlocked. Plus if you see the approximation of the cost of the components, Apple is still making money off the iPad, even if you buy zero apps. So either way, as long as you're buying the hardware, Apple gets your money, and you fail as a hater.

Well that's not entirely true really. They sell the hardware because many people purchase content from iTunes and that is the ONLY way to watch iTunes content on a mobile device. So whether they make money on iTunes is irrelevant, because iTunes is used to get people to buy iPods and iPhones and now iPads. If Apple allowed flash and bluray on their mobile devices, then people would be less inclined to buy from iTunes because they could watch hulu or whatever, and then buy a different mobile device that allows them to do that.

To what end? Build a piece of crap Flash App/Ad/Game and then export it into a standard, copied and pasted code iPhone App, so it an run like crap on that too?

To be fair, there's a lot of good Flash games out there, and a lot rubbish in App Store already too. I don't think Flash Apps will change the status quo.

Regardless of how I feel about Flash and dumb apps, there's a lot to be said about putting creative tools in the hands of creative people.

I have to stop there before I start contradicting my own post history :p

Well then maybe you might like to read the other intervening posts. It was nothing to do with mobile browsing.

No, it's about unifying and executing on a vision for the future; and web standards are part of that.

People are going off on how the iPad isn't getting loads of desktop OS features, but when Safari starts going the way of Mobile Safari -- oooh, what's Apple thinking?

If you need to see Flash on a page, by all means launch Firefox. Oh, wait, they and Google aren't crazy about Flash either. Go figure. Well I guess you can always emulate Windows and launch IE. See, there is a solution, don't despair!

"Dear Steve
As an avid Mac user and owner, please get your head out of your ass on the Flash.

"Dear Loon

Flash on the iphone/ipad would allow unregulated copying and piracy of software that app developers have worked hard for, and also allow the unauthorised streaming of copyrighted material.

Sometimes, freedoms must be limited for the good of society.
Most civilised countries for example - restrict the access to cheap firearms.
You may wish to see this as an infringement of your liberty, but the alternative is to tolerate a murder and piracy rate in far excess of more regulated societies.

Would you want to spend a year developing an app to have it ripped off and given away within 24 hours of it going on sale?

I hope you understand, this is for everyone's good.

Steve

P.S. Please stop calling me at work - people are beginning to talk"

Just because everyone use them is not a good reason to support it.

Seriously, Flash is so 2000's. I think you should get your head out of your ass and learn HTML5.

Apple is about thinking of the future not the past.

Go with Microsoft if popularity is important to you.

All Apple needs to do is extract h264 video from a Flash object and display it as a QT movie, or an HTML5 <video> element in the SWF's place. That will address about 80% of people's Flash concerns, and shouldn't be difficult to implement at all (Click2Flash manages to pull it off as a plugin).

If Apple allows Adobe to release a Flash player as a stand alone app which will open SWF files when you click on them in the browser, that would satisfy the other 20% and not crash your browser or suck up battery power if you don't want it to. Adobe has an iPhone "compiler" for Flash apps already allowing developers to package Flash programs as iPhone apps, so it's not too far fetched to think they could make a program which executes an SWF file in wrapper.

This would be the best solution, imo. It would make all/most people happy - those who want it can have Flash, everyone gets access to nearly all the video on the web with hardware acceleration and the improved battery life that way, and any Flash related crashes should happen in Adobe's standalone app so it would not reflect on Apple software.

Even just extracting the video from Flash files would probably be enough for most people demanding Flash support.

It's amusing to read comments saying Apple "fear" Google and that Google are "the new".

Yes, it's good to see Apple have a real rival again, but at the end of the day Google are a search engine company. Yes, they are expanding, but they have no hardware or software portfolio to go toe to toe with Apple with except the Nexus and Android OS.

When people hear "Apple", they instantly think Mac, iPod, and iPhone.

When people hear "Google", they instantly think search engine.

More tech savvy people like us know what else Google is doing, but to Joe Public, Google are not on the same radar as Apple.

Quad Core MacBook Pros

I thought the same thing, but it could just be a promotional pitch to spur excitement. I'm not sure what they could really do, besides lower prices. But apple isn't really aiming at the low-priced computer market. It will be interesting to see what they do this year.
Quad Core MacBook Pros for one thing. :)

HTML5 is going nowhere until IE support it, this might never happen.

and flash works fine on my macs.

Interesting....few comments here.

First, this HTML5 thing is true, but how long will it take to become mainstream. How many sites will have to completely redevelop their site to HTML5? There is still room for flash, and I am sorry steve, you are wrong here. Yet I also see and understand the reason why not implement it. Adobe needs to step it up, both companies are saying "we don't need them, they need us" and one just needs to fold.

I believe adobe is starting to find alternative ways around this. Take a look at this: http://cs5.org/?p=359. Being an Flash/Flex developer myself, this is an interesting concept. IF adobe is able to pull this off, then will we need flash on the iPad/iPhone? The other question is if Adobe release such a feature, what will happen if apple starts to include flash; will this feature just die? I say no....porting your flash applications over to iPhone/iPad will be a great alternative...opening up the app store even more!!

In regards to Blu-ray, come on steve, just put it in there already! It is not because we want to watch blu-ray movies, it is because we want to actually USE our HD home movies!!! You have iMovie supporting HD along with Final Cut Studio. What is the point if we can't share our Full 1080p HD movies with the our family and friends?

I am scared now....I think Jobs is going to take this touch screen thing too far. iMacs to the next level scares me. PLEASE don't include a touch screen. Touch screen needs to stay in the portable market, not the desktop one. Update the processor, memory, dual hard drives (?), bigger screen, etc. but don't make the system touch screen.

Another item I am a little iffy about is apple making their own processors, again. For the portable devices, fine, but they need to stick with Intel for their laptops and desktops.

Finally, apple is become a driving force in the technology world. Google, entering the mobile phone market, good or bad? I don't know, but your partnership with apple might not be the best one to break. Microsoft, stop making consumer products....stick with your business/corporate products. This is one avenue apple can not compete with you on without major advancements. Microsoft needs to start improving in business arena now because if apple gets the "hmmm..." then you are dead.

P.S.
With this new information, I am debating on selling my apple stock....:(

You sound like a corporate discourse agent.

Wow... Steve spoke and you all drank the Kool Aid lol...

Nexus One is already better than the iPhone and the argument can also be made for the droid. Everything about those phones is better, save the app store. I think the App store has something like 10,000 more farting apps.

Steve Jobs held a town hall meeting at Apple late last week following the iPad launch to field questions from Apple's employees about the launch. Wired reports on what was said at the meeting by Steve Jobs. Two of the big topics included Google and Adobe.

On Google, Jobs confirms the much-reported competition between the two companies.
As for Adobe, Jobs said they are lazy and Jobs blames Adobe for a buggy implementation of Flash on the Mac as one of the reasons they won't support it.
Those are the main points covered by Wired's article. We had received a more detailed report of the Apple meeting, but hadn't been able to corroborate it until now. Many of the details of the Wired report line up with our anonymous submission, so we believe it likely to be accurate. Some additional key points that we learned:

- Apple will deliver aggressive updates to iPhone that Android/Google won't be able to keep up with
- iPad is up there with the iPhone and Mac as the most important products Jobs has been a part of
- Regarding the Lala acquisition, Apple was interested in bringing those people into the iTunes team
- Next iPhone coming is an A+ update
- New Macs for 2010 are going to take Apple to the next level
- Blu-Ray software is a mess, and Apple will wait until sales really start to take off before implementing it.

To what end? Build a piece of crap Flash App/Ad/Game and then export it into a standard, copied and pasted code iPhone App, so it an run like crap on that too?

This is not an accomplishment of any kind. Anyone can export there "work" into a iPhone app. Apple GIVES you all the code you need to do this without any modification. How useful/usable the "work" will be once it's an App, remains to be seen. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple rejects these types of apps outright based on the fact that they will not work, at all, like iPhone apps with iPhone UI elements. This is essentially what we're talking about right? Being able to build your App outside of Xcode, ignoring all Apple protocols, and then forcing it INSIDE of an iPhone App. it does not become an iPhone App.

Stop trolling for crying out loud.

Sir. You have no idea what on earth you are talking about.

Get some clue and we can continue discussion on equal level :)

Better performance without Flash, try it.

My personal view about it:

--Flash--
This "thing" has been the subject of so many discussions. Major problem I see is that it is THE major instability plugin for every browser around. Ok, good programers, good program. You're right there. But try to have your PHONE crashing or halting because of a flash and you'll understand why they are not supporting it.

Whenever there is a risk to change the main focus of the device, they will NOT implement it. In a computer you can kill the browser, in an iPhone or even the iPad, I wonder how many people know how to force an application to quit.

Some said already: it is a proprietary technology. Adobe does what it wants with it, and that would mean saying they should do whatever they want with the internet and pricing for you to write to it.

Flash is a great thing, but I particularly hate it, and would like to see it gone. I already use ClickToFlash and it is awesome to be able to browse the web without that ****. If you want to play Farmville great, but honestly, you don't need flash to use the web.

I access the web for information, not to watch and wait the damn menu do all its twirls until I can finally access what I want.

This is exactly correct, try it here:

http://rentzsch.github.com/clicktoflash/

Thanks! Read the link, its is also possible without using the terminal command. Just press and hold opt+cmd when you click on an application icon in the dock; it will hide all other windows.

Yeah, they were non-voting shares, so they didnt have much power, only profits.

LOL, i stand somewhat corrected.

1) Multitasking can setill be performed even without applications sharing the whole screen. Suppose youre chatting with someone over AIM or Fring, and you get a link to Safari. Youre not going to quit one app to go to the other and then quit that to go BACK to the other, are you? My Nokia E71 allows multitasking. Its never occured to me, but if it didnt, i'd find it VERY annoying. I switch between applications on my nokia all the time, particularly when looking at web page information i want to send to a friend via text message. There are of course other cases, but its clear that the lack of multitasking is unforgiveable.

2) Nokia N900 runs flash perfectly fine, and its hardware specs are even lower than the ipads. Flash is awful because adobe ported it to OS X poorly. Runs perfectly fine on windows.

3) It actually doesnt, apples had an amazing history with poor battery life. The iphone doesnt do so well, and i dont see the ipad doing much better given apples history.

4) I'd love to challenge you to a speed typing competition but im wicked fast on my nokia e71 and its got one of the smaller qwerty tactile keyboards of the smartphones. The androids have a much bigger keyboard so im sure comparing that to a small and inaccurate touchscreen iphone will be quite a difference in accuracy and speed. I've tried on many occasions to get used to an iphones and ipod touches touch screen and touch keyboard, and the number of mistakes i make turn me off more than rosie o'donnel.

After that narcissistic rant maybe you should have yourself bronzed and placed in the center of Bethlehem.

Easy buddy. Seems like someone's CEO is on the offensive after his new product has gotten torched. How about we don't build up everyone's expectations again? Just do what you normally do. Stay hush hush and then deliver a good product. It's worked in the past and should work again.

Hello! Anybody home. The rumors mills like Macrumors and AI sold you the hype. Apple did stay hush hush. Shhhhhhhh!
