So, did you expect that he would come out and say "We are going to have a mediocre iphone update later this year!" He's Apple's biggest cheerleader and just released a product that is getting questionable press. He needs to keep the troops motivated. Especially true when the stock has taken a hit since the iPad release.

What annoys me are both of these statements:

"Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy, he says. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it’s because of Flash. No one will be using Flash, he says. The world is moving to HTML5."

"- Blu-Ray software is a mess, and Apple will wait until sales really start to take off before implementing it."

To me, that says "You'll use your media how I want you to, not to what is available or prevalent in the marketplace."

Flash may suck, but it is still a dominant technology. While Apple may want to kill it, I could give a damn. I just want to have the ability to watch movies on whatever device I'm using. Not tomorrow or when another technology takes over, but today...

The other one about Blu-ray is BS and again limiting my choices. I'd gather that they are not supporting Blu-Ray because it goes against their digital only media distribution strategy and not because the software is buggy. That's not going to stop me from purchasing Blu-Rays. It is going to make me look at my Macs and think less of it.

Personally, I see the iPad failing. It doesn't really do anything that I need or do not already have in my laptop or phone. It is kinda like Apple said "The iPod Touch is great. Let's make it bigger." Bigger isn't always better...

Then again, I think that failure for a company every now and again is a good thing. It stops them from getting too cocky.

I dont remember the last time my computer crashed, froze or firefox crashed due to flash. I have a mac pro. Is it only me that thinks this whole flash debacle is greatly exaggerated?

Anyway, if he says that macs are going to be taken to the next level, im expecting some crossfire capability for ATI cards, garbage collection for SSD drives and a fix on the green button in the finder and other applications as it does NOT properly maximize windows.

I have lost count each day how many times Flash affects my browsing!

Say what You want, but for me the reason for the lack of Flash on the iPhone is rather simple:
It would kill the App-Store.
:)
NOT

I got my new MacBook Pro 13 out of beachball hell only after installing ClickToFlash, a Flash controller. Now, no Flash autoloads, but only when I manually click it. Result: No more beachballs. And no more crashes.

You Flashbois are barking up the wrong tree. Flash sucks on a Mac (Thanks for the quality, Adobe.) and my friend says it sucks on a PC.

I don't really get why Apple is so opposed to Blu-ray. I don't see it as being in any sort of "mess"... I suppose there may be more to the licensing aspects of the technology, which the consumer know little about. It is Sony's technology afterall.

It's the rules imposed by the Studios to which Apple objects. Blu-ray is highly invasive of the operating system and part of it must reside in the kernel. These rules were put into place to prevent copying of discs, but even though that's been done now they're still hanging on to cracked technology. Sound familiar? I guess the Studios are even more dumb than the RIA.

I appreciate how forward he is, I think mac 10.7/11.0 wont be as impressive as everyone is gearing up for, I think they might be over hyped.

I like how he acknowledges is that droid is way ahead of iPhone, im excited for the fix to that.

Also, I agree on blu ray, the hardware is not worth the price, and it doesnt sell well enough for it to be a good economic decision, if you want blu ray, buy a ps3 or a blu ray player, I dont think that you really need it on a notebook. MAYBE it could make sense on the imac or mac pro...

Problem with both HDD and clouds for backup is that they are subject to crashes. Your hdd <b>will<b> fail. It's only a matter of when. Clouds are only as useful as your internet connection. Backing up to optical media is a much more secure method for backing up.

Oh and Optical media doesn't fail? I have some bad news for you... Writable and Re-writable Optical media does fail. Optical drives fail, all forms of storage fail. The future is solid state. That has a chance of getting close to fail safe as technology improves and it will be faster and ultimately cheaper than any moving drive, optical or magnetic.

Exactly why that presentation was not meant for you. You only see what Steve Jobs and company demoed for you. That presentation was for software developers the people who watched it and said: "That's nice, but I want make an app that ..."

And trust me when I say that there are a ton of apps waiting to be designed that would make the iPad a killer device. Just wait until all the apps for musicians start coming out.

It only takes 2 hours to DL 8 gigs. Maybe less. Also, no one uses trueHD in a meaningful way. You need a crazy good audio setup to appreciate it. 99% percent of viewers don't have this type of setup so why would they care.

Regardless, BD playback is there for Linux. Not long before the open source world gets it going on the Mac. Think MakeMKV.

Really you are downloading at some exceptional speed. so if 8000mb over 2 hrs equals 67 mb /min which equals greater than 1000 kb/sec wow you must have a line greater than a t1 going straight to your house. How much that cost you???
Actually my denon audio system handles it 7.1 and there is a difference from 5.1 to 7.1 maybe not on those crapy sony systems but on my system there is a difference. Actually bd is on ms as well not just linux.

the 'restriction' is that they will not put buggy software on their mobile devices, regardless of the clout of the creator. so really what they are doing is playing fair. Joe Q GameMaker gets his buggy software rejected, so does Big Boy Adobe.

if they would so something about the bugs, Apple would drop the 'restriction'

1 lost sale, but there are at least another 2B people with money in their pockets, too.

I agree 100%

A+

Translation:

I mean, I'd really like to believe that 4.0 will be a big software update, I can't. They have spent all their time incorporating API's and rebuilding their apps for the iPad in leui of updating the stale UI of the iPhone OS.

What are people's main requests for 4.0, other than the oft touted "multitasking" and "Flash" which are excluded for strategic reasons I'm sure (battery life, and positioning iTunes Store as THE source for content etc).

I can't think of many features I'm desperately missing...
IDEAS?

Apple has always used 'doesn't crash as much as Windows machines' as a PR point. so if they come across something that is crashing particularly a lot and it requires support by the creator and that support isn't coming, yeah they are going to restrict it to protect their users.

because like it or not, the geeks like around here that can handle such issues in 10 minutes and move on are only a small part of the Apple world. they are like 20% and shrinking as more and more folks are buying Macs. Folks that aren't geeks, don't have the token geek in the family, don't have a big IT department in their MomandPop, their office, their school and so on.

It's not that uncommon, I can download at over 2 MB per second, if the server is up to it. That's just ADSL2 over the phone line - £18 a month. People sometimes assume that everyone has access to the same technology though - they don't. Many people are stuck with much slower speeds, and have no choice.

Isn't that a bit of a bold statement?

Corporations will move to whatever works best for their market. YouTube and Vimeo are both testing public HTML5 betas. You think it's impossible that Hulu also examine using HTML5?

BBC iPlayer (probably the largest source of streaming traffic in the UK) works on the iPhone already through Safari. The BBC are also experimenting with HTML5 combined with technologies like pubsub: http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2009/08/html_5_and_timed_media.html

Early stage with that experiment, but they've already got a prior solution that works on iPhone OS for now.

The US market is huge, but that doesn't mean that all arguments should be focused upon it.

Not really ipad will still not be worth peoples times. See you are comparing this device to the ipod touch. The other mp3 makers where exactly that mp3 players that could play mp4. The ipod touch could play apps which allowed it more functionality also it was multitouch.

Now lets look at the pad vs the google tablet. The google tablet will have more features more varieties and the same number of apps but will be available on more cell carriers and they will have an model that actually has an dual e-ink screen. Hands down google is setup to own this market. Pad does not have a chance.

You sir should be thankful for brave Americans like Mr. Jobs who are fighting for free and open standards on the Internet.

A script in this movie is causing Adobe Flash Player 10 to run slowly. If it continues to run, your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script?

Welcome to the Web. Brought to you by Adobe.

Apple is starting to suck

They need to start making products FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS instead of FOR THEMSELVES. Apple rose to popularity because their stuff was better, and it filled a need.Who needs a tablet that runs the closed iPhone OS? Give us the tablet we want, one that runs a full open os where we can install what we like, bought where we like. Steve realizes he miscalculated this one, and now he's lashing out / justifying. Reminds me of "Pirates of Silicon Valley".

You're talking about a product that doesn't even exist. The Google tablet will have more everything, it will part waters, give you a massage, keep your wife from complaining too much.

Come on now..

Apple has an SDK out right now, that developers can use immediately. They have all the specs they now what they are building for.

Right now there is no Google tablet, there is no defined set of specs for a Google tablet.

Apple has a very nice head start, and I'll tell you another thing ... this time next year you will be able to walk into a cell phone store and get an iPad for next to nothing with an internet contract. I put money on that.

Oh and Optical media doesn't fail? I have some bad news for you... Writable and Re-writable Optical media does fail.

While they can fail, their failure rate is far less than hard drives. I have 3 Blu-ray discs with important documents sitting in my safe deposit box for this very reason.

Optical drives fail...

But can be replaced without loss of content.

The future is solid state. That has a chance of getting close to fail safe as technology improves and it will be faster and ultimately cheaper than any moving drive, optical or magnetic.

But you cannot press content onto ssds; only optical media can at this point. That makes production costs far less for optical media versus others.

there is a difference from Mbytes to Mbites. Your speeds are not as fast as you think. I am talking megabytes. Basically you can not download the movie in 2 hrs.
