WoooooW

and that's operating systems for computers and mobile devices.

if you judge the iphone os only against mobile devices, the numbers are vastly different

and since the game with the iphone/ipad is mobile internet that is the apt comparison.

so find some stats on those numbers and we can really talk

Hello! Maybe you should read? Steve Jobs telling people (including media people) that the TamPad is the most important thing he HAS EVER WORKED ON is NOT keeping expectations hush hush/tempered. It may be keeping the product hush hush but it is not limiting hype. And the hype is all I am suggesting he tone down...

you do understand that this Town Hall was an internal meeting for Apple Employees that was not meant to be leaked to the press. someone did so at the risk of his/her job if caught. just like the folks that leaked the internal AppleCare Action Memos etc.

so given what was actually going on, Jobs probably needed to more not less hype.

Maybe it's time Apple DID enter the Search Engine wars. When Flash finally dies its inevitable slow death, internet searching will be about the only "core" function on all devices that isn't controlled by Apple. No need to re-invent the wheel, for a company with Apple's resources -- just how hard could it be?

(And BTW, try running Flash on a PPC G4 to see just how awful it really is.)

40 Billion in cash. Please just buy yahoo search or aol search unit.

I would say they are doing a good job, given their last earnings report.

Exactly how successful have tablets running a desktop OS with superficial touch on top been in the past decade. Exactly. This device is a new paradigm of product, not the same old failed products of the past.

I think a lot of the hatred toward the mobile OS lies in people who started with Mac back when they were mainly in the desktop OS business. Now they feel neglected. However, you can't argue with Apple's priorities given this:

apple-revenue-by-segment.jpg

I am still not sure how Steve knows he miscalculated anything given that the device hasn't launched yet.

He knows it because the device is being ridiculed, and questioned severely. the phone OS was revolutionary in the phone space, and the closed app platform made sense in the phone space. Is the tablet a computer, or an overgrown phone? Apple thinks it's the latter, some of us think it should be the former.

If you aren't going to buy an iPad, shut up! The world doesn't need to know that! I'm tired of all the people who have to complain how stupid it is and they aren't going to buy it and it will be a big failure.

+1

It is annoying. To add to this, I don't understand where civility has gone in these discussions. I've been called a moron, a cow, an idiot, etc. because I find this device will meet the needs I identified before they even released the MBA. If this device isn't for you, fine, but it is for me, and I'm going to enjoy it as much as I enjoy my AppleTV. The other point to add is that I don't understand why we can't discuss (calmly, rationally, without offense) what their issues are with the product as it is to be released v1. Many I believe are feature requests that I would be interested to discuss with them. Others are features that can be added via OS/software/app updates and purchases. The rest are features that are not aligned with the purpose of this device, and what I don't understand is why people get so upset that a device is addressing needs that aren't necessarily theirs.

Great more speculation

Every time they release information like this everyone almost creams their pants. What will they release next? I'll believe it when I see.

The Droid is the closest thing to the iPhone. I left AT&T over the crummy 3G coverage and I haven't been happier with a network. Yes, I gave up my iPhone which sucks but Verizon's coverage beats AT&T's all the time.

After hearing about the maxiPad (and seeing the old MadTV footage) it's laughable. I am loosing faith in Apple every day over the bad decisions it has made.

Releasing the iPad on AT&T's already taxed network? Come one already.

So many people have said there are so many wi-fi areas that it won't be a tax on the network with the iPad. This sounds familiar to what they said and continue to say about the iPhone. People do not use wi-fi all the time. If they did AT&T would not be having ll these issues.

Keep the speculation to yourselves.

Yes Jobs is smart but at least do some research on a new new for a product.

Get away from AT&T already.

I'd like to ask a question - what will this device *not* do that you want to do? I don't mean, "install whatever I want." I mean, what tasks will it *not* perform that you want it to perform?

I have no desire to interact with the iPhone OS on a larger screen. I want a tablet that is a viable alternative to my other devices. I want to be able to say "today I'll work at the beach on my tablet." Currently the iPad is useless if I already have a Macbook and an iPhone, yet for some reason I have the nagging feeling that it *should* satisfy a need, and I *should* want one. Is the iPad a computer, or an overgrown phone? I think it should be the former, Apple thinks it should be the latter. Google will decide, and probably get my money. A tablet running the Google desktop OS where I can use apps sourced from anywhere would win over the iPad for me, and you're talking to someone who in 20 years has never spent a penny on a computer made by anyone other than Apple.

iPad will be a detachable screen for the MacBook and MacBook Pro. Detach it and it's an iPad and connecting it to the base will allow for a keyboard, trackpad, better graphic, optical drive, longer battery life, more memory, HDD space, etc... you get the picture.

Where else can the MacBook and MacBook Pro innovate on. The 30 pin dock connector can transfer audio and video, plus charge and data transfer. It is the next logical step.

Let's stick to the facts, iPad that sucks!
Lets stick to iPad-Apple is getting the message! iPad needs serious work before April! x10

You wont make a fortune selling a little-mini Crap. And Mr. Turner that you are the chief investor of Apple, say bb to your money! Look at real investors here:
http://www.investors.com/NewsAndAnalysis/Article.aspx?id=107625083&source=Newsfeed

Uh...dude if you don't like it don't buy it. And relax...a lot. Maybe try decaf.

And BTW, all those investor "opinions" are just shorters gaming the market to get the stock price down to $190 so they can buy a ton of shares and take them to the bank once the price normalizes around $250.

1-800-call-apple

Those of us who have supported Apple for decades and now think they're going down the wrong path will bloody well speak our minds, thank you very much.

Your opinions, though interesting to you, are not anything *we* here can do anything about. If you have a gripe with Apple, take it up with them. If you want to discuss in a rational and calm manner the issues you have with the products, then let's do so because I'd like to understand what your ideas for features might be (as I may not have even imagined them and I love talking technology), but above all realise *we* can't do anything about them here, and frankly I'm a bit tired of being attacked for finding a product that meets my requirements to be interesting enough to want to buy one.

Personally, I have ClickToFlash on both my Macs and my work Dell - as I don't play online Flash games, there are very few sites where I need to enable the Flash to work, and on the majority of those they don't even need to be using Flash for the end result that they achieve.

As for BD drives in Macs - how many 9.5mm slot load BD drives are there being manufactured right now? I only know of one (Panasonic UJ-232A) and that one costs $450 on eBay. With normal Apple pricing, that would add 40% or more to the cost of a MacBook or 13" MBP. Until there are more affordable options, I doubt it'll come (it's also 2x read 2x write). From looking at Panasonic's website, they're no longer making a 9.5mm BD drive anyway!

This analyst is predicting that Android might overtake the iPhone in 2012, while also claiming that the iPhone market share will grow from 10.8 per cent to 13.7 per cent.

I was looking for sources to backup the claim that many experts were predicting the demise of the iPhone within three years.

Precisely, I see absolutely no evidence to date that Android is imminently going to take over the world. If anything, the iPhone looks far more likely to do so, especially given the next major version if just around the corner (3gs being more of an update than anything).

  • Apple has ARM in-house - highly efficient and powerful mobile chips might give them an unbeatable advantage when this endeavour comes to full fruition.
  • There touchscreen UI is still notably ahead of the competition, if this lead is maintained then this could be another longer term edge.
  • Apple products are cool. With one of the best product designers in the world - Johnny Ive - at the helm, everybody wants a piece of 'it'.
  • iTunes is rapidly becoming THE standard for computer-based media consumption - this makes its products the defacto choice to a massive number of consumers.

What exactly has Google got? Android is smart, but its a geeks toy. It certainly doesn't look dangerous at the moment. Jobs is just pissed because he refuses to tolerate anyone stepping on his toes.

If anything, its Apple which is dangerous: they're rapidly becoming a 21stC tech-media monopoly - you only have to look at how squirmish people in film/music/technology companies get to see this.

The iPad: "Our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price."

- The Mac OSX is their most advanced tech, not the iPhone OS. Magical perhaps, but it's not so revolutionary. And the price is a difficult justification, after owning an iPod Touch or an iPhone.

My point is, SJ may have great hopes and expectations for later in 2010 but I'm not so impressed with the latest offerings. Hype perhaps, but I haven't praised Apple for their ingenuity recently. Anticipation is one thing, but delivering is another.

Virtuon, I have no idea what you're talking about. I didn't say anything about Windows, I didn't compare Windows to OS X, I'm talking about the iPhone OS on the tablet.
If you remember, in my original post, I was asking about the software of computers. Talking about the openness of Phone software is redundant.

To sell apps for the Android, you must go through the Android Store. Second, restriction apps is essential for protecting the device. It's needed to shuffle through the crap, and separate it from the good. Maybe you didn't hear about the Android apps ridden with viruses. Apple does the opposite. Your other point is negated; iphone app developers can sell their apps for whatever amount they which. Sure, you can't change the name of the apps you downloaded, tweak them, get them for free, customize the OS; but it allows for consistency...

I'm not convinced that any of this matters. For the intended market, which is probably not people who post or read MR, the only thing that matters is joy of use.

Not ease of use. Joy of use.

I'm certain Apple can provide this. Based on what I've seen of Android, I'm not certain Google can.

I always felt the "Joy of use" aspect, thats why I can live with some of the restrictions apple imposes. Ofcourse, AppleTV is the perfect example of a "Joy " to use device, but I did hack it to install more codecs.I use it every day.

I remember when I first had my powerbook in 2001, it brought back the joy in using a personal computer, then came iPod, iPhone, now iPad.

The way you "enjoy" using an iPad will overshadow most of its shortcomings. (Flash should die, and HTML5 should be the standard. Firefox Mobile may not support Flash, and IE9 is going to have HTML5 support.)

I make an app, I want to package it and sell it however I damn well want to, just like app makers on any computer platform. I own a device and need an app, so I go wherever I damn well want to, to get one. Informed?

The app maker still has to adhere to the standard that is set for that particular O/S.

Internet banking for a start - my bank uses a security plugin that is supported in every browser on OS X, but not in Mobile Safari. And no I'm not going to switch banks - they may all end up like that eventually anyway.

My bank has an app for the iPhone. Perhaps you should find a bank that has an app for it. Whether it be Android,WinMobile,RIM or iPhone.

Every time they release information like this everyone almost creams their pants. What will they release next? I'll believe it when I see.

My 3G coverage is fine as is most people I suspect. Except for NYC and S.F. and maybe out in the woods.
I think you speak for the very vocal minority.

He knows it because the device is being ridiculed, and questioned severely.

By you.

The rest of the world seems rather taken with it.

"Readers get a dollop of Apples magical sauce - The iPad may do for words what iPods did for music, and it spells trouble for makers of netbooks and ereaders"
Sunday Times.

Definitely excited about iPhone 4 and new Macs. I plan on buying two new iPhones, a new iMac and a new MacBook Pro this year. iPad.. not so much.

By you.

The rest of the world seems rather taken with it.

Wrong. Most people/websites i've seen talking about the iPad are doing nothing but making fun of it. It's pointless, expensive and not innovative at all. They took the iPhone, stripped it down, made it bigger and added a book-app store. Nothing more.

Right on. I miss Apple Computer.

Steve may have brought Apple back with the iMac but that was more than a decade ago. It's time for him to move aside and Apple to get someone who can do justice to its computer business.

Amen...amen.

Apple has reached critical mass with Jobs. He is too hands on, almost maniacal, that is why there has been no innovation on the "Macintosh" computer side. He focuses on one thing at a time becaouse he does not properly delegate.

He has also been too concerned about increasing the bank account balance and accommodating the music/movie industry, screwing Apple customers in the process. How is it possible Amazon and others offer better quality, DRM free music for FAR LESS $ than the giant iTunes store? Why don't we have the option of Blu-Ray yet? Why don't we have HDMI on Mac's "dated" video cards? Exactly what is the compelling reason to by Apple Mac hardware for a premium price? Why are we asked to pay even more for Apple Care when 3 years warranty is now a PC industry standard? Mac users have been paying a premium while getting less and less in return.

To me, only Mac OS is compelling, narrowly so at the moment. Yes, Snow Leopard is 64 bit now. So what? Apple has made little effort in working with developers to bring more 64B apps to the platform. In fact, it has done little to further develop its own software in the past few years.

The reason the iPhone has succeeded is because that has been his focus, and he has done well. All the while the Mac has been neglected. The mac Mini is pathetic at the current price point. The Mac Pro has only gotten a new processor slapped in every 12-16 months. The only ones getting decent (not great) updates, albeit once a year, are the iMac and the laptops.

Jobs critical mass is running out of momentum. More and more Mac users are getting frustrated with the products, or lack there of, Apple is producing. "Do less for far more $" seems to be the new motto. Hell, even the iApps have been stagnant for a long time now. Once again, Apple seems to be squandering a great opportunity to grow and stay competitive. It will not take much for consumers and Wall Street to become disenchanted with the "new" Apple, as it has in the past.

After 20+ years using Macs exclusively, and a fortune, I am seriously considering switching to Windows. Bugs or not, there at least I can do whatever the hell I want for far less $. I am tired of Apple trying to tell me what I need/don't need. Those choices are for us and us alone to make.

I'm not one of the people who has been calling you names or attacking you. I'm taking about the iPad, and if you're taking criticism of the iPad as a personal attack, I'm sorry for that.

I thoroughly agree.

Don't ever give me financial advice. The worlds best CEO and best CEO of the decade steering Apple to have its most profitable quarter ever, and you and others want him to step down. Actually, now that I think about it - do you have any stock tips? If you do I'm going out and dumping them immediately!

Seriously, those of you that think Steve is a failure disagree with some mighty big and credible organisations like, Fortune Magazine and the Harvard Business Review, and also with their most recent quarterly earnings. You can't argue with the numbers, no matter what you think of him. Unless, your criteria aren't profit/capitalism based??

Is the tablet a computer, or an overgrown phone? Apple thinks it's the latter, some of us think it should be the former.

So was the iPod. How did that turn out?

Secondly, in the keynote it is clear they see this as third category of product and not an 'oversized phone' as people love to think.
