Since the focus has been on the iPhone (a ridiculous success), they seem (IMHO), to have ignored the other product lines. They have become stale and not really in touch with today's technology.

Consumer electronics company vs. innovative computer company. I miss Apple. I wish my MBP came with a fingerprint reader for passwords.

Oh and Optical media doesn't fail? I have some bad news for you... Writable and Re-writable Optical media does fail. Optical drives fail, all forms of storage fail. The future is solid state. That has a chance of getting close to fail safe as technology improves and it will be faster and ultimately cheaper than any moving drive, optical or magnetic.

Every media fails, but with optical media it's a lot easier--and cheaper--to make multiple redundant backups. There's a lot less trauma replacing an optical drive than a hard drive and it's really no big deal to burn multiple copies of backup discs that should be kept in different locations.

For long term storage/archiving, the jury is still out on solid state. Optical backups have proved longest lived, so far.

LOLz. Jobs never said that. The rumor sites did.

Wrong. He did say it. And he said it to people around him. And he MUST have known that it would get out -- after all, people are always clamoring to get insight on Apple releases.

You may argue that he has the right to say what he wants and to convey his excitement to people at the company. That's hard to argue with -- I mean, your CEO needs to be excited and needs to get the company excited. But, Jobs has gone out of his way to make things secretive. He has gone out of his way to make Apple products a mystery. This generates hype on its own (and it's a semi-intelligent move on his part). But, knowing this, and knowing that it can get people's expectations too high, he has to temper his enthusiasm. Let his minions (like that weirdo with the British accent that introduces every product on the Apple website) get people riled. Once something is connected to Jobs, there's a frenzy. It's weird, really. And if the product is merely good, and not great, you get a huge letdown -- like this week.

Heh heh. That's funny. It should also have a built in laser pointer for presentations, a built in coffee grinder, for, you know, grinding coffee, retinal scanners, just because they're cool, a dome of silence so I don't have to listen to anyone, and a 6 speed transmission.

Can I have your attention please? Thank you. I'd just like to say that flash ≠ HTML5 .
(Crowd goes wild).

Seriously, there are plenty of sites out there that use flash when a static context or HTML5 will do just as well (just take a look at Apple's website, which is infact flash free and one of my favorites), but corps like hulu and such will not abandon flash's streaming capabilities any time soon. The olympics? Flash. Cloud Apps? Flash/AIR. I don't like closed standards and I don't like flash very much, because i've been trying to get into actionscript for YEARS and I can't wrap my head around it ;), but to chant "flash is dead! flash is dead! html5 is here and flash is dead!" is untrue because html5 is merely usurping control of content that really can be done on the standard.

I'm not saying Flash is dead - yet. My original thought on the pad was that I would not buy without Flash. Then after hearing the comments from the town meeting it's occurring to me that Adobe should be bending more and that we as fans should be pushing on Adobe rather than Apple. If Adobe won't fix the issues (that we know are many on the Mac) then Adobe should not be in control of something that is so widely used on the web.

I don't believe that Steve and Apple is just being capricious. Nor do I think that they have a target on Adobe like they do on Google these days. Google is threatening them; Adobe is just being a nuisance by not creating a product that works as it should. It does seem to be a bit of an unnecessary pissing match between Apple and Adobe but between the two I've decided to go with Apple.

Flash is not dead; it's used all over the web. Until Steve kills it.

Do you guys really think that in an age of increasing download speeds and movie & TV subscription services, Apple TV etc, as well as cloud computing / online storage services, Apple is going to put blu-ray drives in their computers? My local electronics store gives away blu-ray players with TV purchases. They are obsolete. Removable media is dead.

Apple is making products for their customers.

They just don't use YOUR definition of their customers. A definition is that is basically 'the digigeeks that spend all day on sites like macrumors and deem any product that doesn't do what they want, how they want to be a waste, trash and a failure before it even releases'

as I said to others in about 90 days we'll see just how big Apple's customer base is and how they feel about the ipad

You quoted only the first sentence of my post, but as you can see from the full text, I basically agree with you.

I agree that the iPad is not for their customers. I suspect the iPad is for everyone on the planet who is not currently their customer.

Who needs a tablet that runs the closed iPhone OS? Maybe not MR readers, but perhaps the millions of people for whom even OS X and Win 7 are still too complex.

Perhaps I could have more accurately stated that I don't think Apple was making this for their Mac customers. I do understand that many of us, myself included, will find joy in using the iPad alongside our iPhones and Macs, but I believe that we were not who Apple had in mind when they designed this product.

And that's a good thing.

"Next iPhone will be A+ upgrade"

Well, no crap  What's he going to say, the next iPhone upgrade will be a C upgrade??

Jobs really knows how to create interest for the smallest of things. Either that or we're all just a bunch of sheep.

Looking forward to the 2010 Macs. Would really love to see Apple get back on track with their computers.

I read that as meaning that there would be an "A" class chip inside it such as the A4 the iPad sports. In my mind it would certainly make sense for them to keep such a thing standard across the mobile product line.

And yes, I too am excited about what new Macs may be coming - especially on the Pro desktop level - I'm using a five year old G5 and its beginning to show its age a little.

DVD Studio Pro should...

I can't believe that DVD Studio Pro has not been updated to author blu-ray disks. Come on Apple/Steve! I want (and many others) want to author blu-ray dvd's and all we have (thank you) is compressor.app which will do a very basic job. Apple led with the superdrive. Apple led with USB and Firewire. Apple led with the year of HD. Now it is time to catch up to authoring blu-ray disks.

Also, I don't want to here to here the stuff about blu-ray being yesterday and computer files being today. One that's not true, and two, people want to turn their video from their new HD camcorders to a blu-ray.

So, come on Apple, release DVD Studio Pro with blu-ray authoring capability.

How is what Google is doing undermining Apple? Because they are trying to make a better product and rely on their services vs Apple's? I don't understand your thinking here. What is illegal? Apple seems scared itself to ask Google not to implement multitouch in the native Nexus One apps. I'm sure Google wants to get along with Apple, but Mr. Stevo never seems to get that and tries to smash the competition (nothing wrong with that). I think you have your companies flip-flopped.

You have proof Apple asked Google not to implement multitouch or are you talkig out of your a$$. Even if Apple did why the **** would Google even oblige. Heck smaller companies like Palm have multitouch on their phones.

Very well put, although I'd take it a step further and say that no one company should have propietary control of a technology that is so widely used on the web.

The nexus one is an odd development as generally the Apple/Google relationship has been a pretty productive one.

In my mind it would certainly make sense for them to keep such a thing standard across the mobile product line.

Why? Wouldn't it make more sense to use a chip in each product that is optimized for the requirements of that product?

Wow... Steve spoke and you all drank the Kool Aid lol...

Nexus One is already better than the iPhone and the argument can also be made for the droid. Everything about those phones is better, save the app store. I think the App store has something like 10,000 more farting apps.
Hey I heard the Nexus One sold 20 000, is it true?

That's more like it. Now we have competition and therefore more innovation....Win/Win for us. I Like =)

My AT&T contract for my iphone 3G is nearing 2 years. Looking forward to a faster iphone and improved camera esp for video. Better yet hopefully the led flash/video light source rumor is true.

I can see a place for the iPad. Especially living room browsing/reading without having to break out a MacBook or using the iphone's tiny screen.

Reckless to refer to Adobe as lazy. I'm sure they're trying but then again maybe Adobe isn't as responsive as it could be.

The Green button isn't for maximizing, it's for zooming. It will maximize the most that makes sense for that window, rather than wasting screen real estate with blank space. Also, unlike maximize you can click it again and it will snap back to its smaller size. So while it may not "properly" maximize, it does properly "zoom" windows, which is a much more efficient use of screen space.

Not really efficient. It just makes a mess of all windows on the desktop, all of them floating around and me constantly scrolling around the screen to find the application. It also causes distraction when working in an application with all windows underneath being a mess.

I like things organized.

IMHO, Apple is definately not afraid to stand up against something, aka Flash. I respect their strong stubborness against Flash, Flash needs to get out and makeway for html5. If Apple and Google push html5 heavily in the next 2 years, then others will follow suit. I'm very interested in this so called "A+" iPhone upgrade as well, a yearly product refresh can't really cut it now days, every 6 months would be much nicer, forcing people to upgrade and sell there current phone. Hopefully the new iPhone will have the A4 chip or something similar, 64gb of storage, WiFi 802.11n, better rear camera with flash, a front facing camera, and multitasking. On the multitasking note, I don't understand why Apple doesnt allow it? They could easily have made a setting under Settings where the user could slide a selector switch to enable or disable multitasking, giving the user the option to drain battery if he/she desires, however Apple probably figures in that most people would forget they left some apps open and has not enabled it yet.

Not that this issue has any relevance on this discussion, but for the record;

I don't like Bill Gates, it was actually his wife that got him to support start the Gates Foundation. Regardless, he is giving money to good causes. What is Steve Jobs doing for anyone? Is he giving back to the community? To any charity? Anything? If so, I am not aware of it.

He does, and a lot of it. But Steve does not post it out there for the world to see. It's called class.
