Not that this issue has any relevance on this discussion, but for the record;

I don't like Bill Gates, it was actually his wife that got him to support start the Gates Foundation. Regardless, he is giving money to good causes. What is Steve Jobs doing for anyone? Is he giving back to the community? To any charity? Anything? If so, I am not aware of it.

Remember the parable about the man who prayed loudly at the front of the temple and the may who sat in the back, praying silently. Which one is more sincere?

I'm not saying that SJ is the man in the back row, but if you want my opinion, I would trust his sincerity more than I would trust the vocal one.

Hey I heard the Nexus One sold 20 000, is it true?

If that is true or even if this is close to being true.... That is embarrassing for GooGle.
Apple sold as many in 1 1/4 days in its last quarter. Thats right 15k a day! 90 days in a row! Counting up to 9Mio.
It is worldwide sales i have to admit that much, but still that is impressive.

Actually FLASH storage is a very short term medium.

Every media fails, but with optical media it's a lot easier--and cheaper--to make multiple redundant backups. There's a lot less trauma replacing an optical drive than a hard drive and it's really no big deal to burn multiple copies of backup discs that should be kept in different locations.

For long term storage/archiving, the jury is still out on solid state. Optical backups have proved longest lived, so far.

Flash shouldn't be considered long term archival storage at all. Flash very slowly looses its memory over time. The denser the flash the faster it looses data. All of this is very process dependent so you really need to look at the manufactures data sheets to get a estimated time for a specific chip in a specific usage case. This by the way is a factor only slightly related to the cells wearing out from use, I'm referring to the charge in the storage cells going away over time even if the Flash isn't being used.

As to optical back ups they have their issues too. But with care they can be long term storage solutions. The biggest problem with optical is making sure alternative disk drives can read the media.

Wow. It's almost like he doesn't know that Blu-Ray and DVD both compress their data streams.

In fact the digital cameras that are increasingly replacing film cameras, even at the Hollywood-blockbuster level, compress the visual data at capture (i.e. "birth"). So Blu-Ray is compressing data that has already been compressed. Double compression. Ouch.

Maybe he watches all of his content directly from film?

Oh wait, isn't film also essentially "compressed" based on the size of crystal particles that sit atop the plastic layer? Then factor in the quality of the optics, the reproduction quality of the distributed prints, the projector from which the film is played (watch those dust specks on the lens, man!), the ability of the screen to reflect the image with no detail lost...

The realities of life must make being a purist sheer hell. ;)

Steve Jobs has AIDS, as in, Apple Is Dominating Sales......

The iPad will be the new gaming device of 2010, games games games, that's where the monies at and Jobs knows this, games make more money than movies these days, apart from Avatar 3D, but the Pad will dominate no matter how much people complain about it not doing this and not doing that.

It will work and it will play games. I'll see you in 2 years.

He does, and a lot of it. But Steve does not post it out there for the world to see. It's called class.

That doesnt matter. Someone is bound to find out. The difference is that nobody really cares what jobs does outside of apple. bill gates is far more known in pop culture (not that jobs isnt, he just doesnt measure up).

Kind of hard for the media to overlook the worlds former richest man when he gives away 10 BILLION dollars.

Jobs is an arrogant idiot. No more Apple for me.

I'm taking my $100,000 (over two years; that's EVERY two years) computer budget to a system that supports Blu-ray.

I've had it with Jobs and his iCrap iToys for kiddies and his overpriced arrogance. Now trying to squash flash. Oooh, "google is out to kill the iPhone." Nutty as Hitler in his bunker.

That's it. Two years is long enough to wait.

You don't run the world, Steve-O, and you ain't never getting my money again. You had more than enough chance to give content creators what they need. Thousands of content creators have been screaming for it for YEARS on this forum and in many others.

Even IF you were to implement Blu-ray now, I'd be the LAST business on earth to trust you.

So long. Enjoy the Mattel biz, for as long as that will last with China on your heels.

Oh. When I need to replace my Tracfone, it WON'T be an iPhone.

If a company has to tell you their device is "magical and revolutionary" (Apple.com) then it's not magical or revolutionary.

Hey you are right!

Store is down....

Will we see an uncharacteristic MacBook Pro update on a Sunday?

If that is the case expect a very sad update to the MBP. If Apple had a bleeding edge update I'd think they would target a week day update with at least a web announcement. It could be a mini update.

As to the new core i3 chips, after seeing some benchmarking I have to wonder if Apple will even bother with this update and instead give us another spin of the C2D. Benchies over on Phoronix are not all that impressive when looked at overall. Some strong improvements but for the most part not significantly fast than Core 2 Duo. Of course that is under Linux.

Looks like I will be hitting refresh for a while to see what is up.

I think we'll probably have Blu-Ray in the Mac next year, if not in this Fall's refresh. Why? Market share. It's growing at a fast pace, and the dual-discs are making them more attractive. With on-line prices coming down for discs (Disney's Up has been as cheap on Blu-Ray as DVD, for example), and standalone players following suit, the writing is on the wall.

I also think there's going to be a new desktop category for Apple...a desktop touch-based appliance using the iPhone/iPad OS. There were rumors already and it just makes sense. I don't see this as an iMac replacement, but an additional category...maybe a SSD, 20-inch touch interface combined with a keyboard and mouse? It would certainly put the App store in stealth mode, and be great for the casual user.

?? Are you implying that the iPad with NO tactile keys can and will take over PSP and Nintendo DS?

Considering OpenGL ported games run like ASS, gaming isnt going to get far on the mac side. Have you tried playing an NFS ported game on OS X? Its absolutely TERRIBLE.

And that is why there are practically NO games on the Macintosh platform. Right?

Like Apple said, "if you don't like the software, make your own."
Well then make your own damn flash like software Apple!
Apple also said that, "they don't see any competition between them & android." and obviously, they clearly see it now.
Don't get me wrong, I truly love Apple. Android/Google can go suck it somewhere else. They're just a wannabe, but then again, it is competition. Apple needs to start steping it up now. Like with multitask, Apple logo glow, flash, etc.
Although, I don't see a front facing camera soon, or Verizon Wireless on iPhone soon.
But you know, why complain? Be happy with what Apple has currently offers. They do offer A LOT!
And for the Verizon/Droid lovers, stop wasting your time. You know you want an iPhone.

Lol, Apple tries to limit or outright block Google on iPhone and Jobs has face to complain about Google phone. This makes MS looks like a non-profit charity organisation.:D

EVERYONE is out to kill the iPhone, hence everyone's feverish attempts to address it by copying it.

I've got news for you, all that 'iCrap" is EXACTLY what the Average User needs and what will give the Average User a better computing experience. I'm all for the philosophy behind this.

That's a broad sweeping statement based upon claiming OpenGL is the culprit.

Any OpenGL 3 compliant game that isn't leveraging nvidia or ati or NFS hardware specific GPU OpenGL extensions should port as expected, at least within the OpenGL code.

Every vendor has specific extensions not part of the OpenGL spec. The more a game leverages those the more they have to duplicate code and test against extensions available on each ported platform to match performance.

IMHO, Apple is definately not afraid to stand up against something, aka Flash. I respect their strong stubborness against Flash, Flash needs to get out and makeway for html5. If Apple and Google push html5 heavily in the next 2 years, then others will follow suit. I'm very interested in this so called "A+" iPhone upgrade as well, a yearly product refresh can't really cut it now days, every 6 months would be much nicer, forcing people to upgrade and sell there current phone. Hopefully the new iPhone will have the A4 chip or something similar, 64gb of storage, WiFi 802.11n, better rear camera with flash, a front facing camera, and multitasking. On the multitasking note, I don't understand why Apple doesnt allow it? They could easily have made a setting under Settings where the user could slide a selector switch to enable or disable multitasking, giving the user the option to drain battery if he/she desires, however Apple probably figures in that most people would forget they left some apps open and has not enabled it yet.

An iPhone refresh every 6 months!!! Only a fool or someone with money to burn, would update every 6 months! Some people don't even upgrade yearly

I have the 3GS since I didn't buy the 3G! I like to wait for a worthwhile update/redesign. Sadly, I might have to pick up a new one if it's really an A+ update! :D
