If you don't like the icon you can do the following:

1. Quit using iTunes and use your Windows Media Player!
2. Replace your icon with this because I think the artist did a pretty good job!
dock.png

3. If you don't like the artists' design, put your "FACE" on your dock!
4. If you're inlove with your girlfriend put her own photo!
5. If you're a fanboy and really like Steve but don't like the icon put his face!
6. Or get a life get over with it and quit bothering other people. He could have spent his time on something more important. :D
Funniest thing I've read in this thread.:D

The new iTunes icon

The new iTunes icon sucks. The original icon was elegant, with the music note in the right color over the CD picture. Steve should listen to apple customers instead of being so dogmatic.

I once had a grumble to Steves email address about how horrible and kitsch the UI is for stuff like notes, garageband and iPads iCal are.

I also got an exact "We disagree" reply.

I thought it might just be me...

I downloaded the software update last night and saw this and thought - yikes, that looks like something Microsoft would have put on a desktop for a music program... I'm not sure what it is about it... Content or just not really lovely in its rendering?

thousands of people steal photoshop thru torrents and that gives you credence to judge this?

not

its an icon, move on. if you dont like it, change it

:apple:

a designer should understand that things can work on multiple levels. You can have the instant impression, which in this case is "music"
so after that initial impression, anything extra that you notice is just making it a nicer icon.
For examples of good Apple icons (that you can't see every detail of in the dock *gasp*):

address book.app
automator.app
chess.app
dashboard.app
dictionary.app
front row.app
garageband.app
ical.app
image capture.app
photobooth.app
preview.app
safari.app
system preferences.app
text edit.app
time machine.app
mail.app

and some really great 3rd party ones:
VLC
Mariner Write
Transmit
Transmission
Chrome
Calibre

If you go into your applications folder and go to full screen and coverflow view, you'll quickly see what I mean. Some of the icons are works of art. Most people never see them, but that doesn't really matter because some people DO, and that's the whole point. The new iTunes icon is like the iChat and Quicktime icons.
I agree, the iTunes 10 icon is so similar to the QT X icon, that it cannot be a coincidence, the same circle, the same light, very similar colour. I really regret Apple going down this path. The QT icon at least is still playing with shape of the Q and the X, same for the text balloon of iChat, in the iTunes 10 icon, the circle does not refer to anything.

Absolutely HATE it. Amateurish doesn't begin to describe this.

Not that the earlier icon was extraordinary, it was fine, but this is nowhere near being in line with the rest of the Apple interface design, icon and GUI research we've been accustomed to.

Wow, that is even more ugly and amateurish than the one Apple used.

First rule of designing logos/icons is that it has to scale down cleanly. A designer of 20 years should know this at an intuitive level. If you took out the junk in the background it would be ok, but nothing spectacular.

I agree, that icon is far worse than the new one. Even the color scheme.

They should change something about an app's logo every year or so, or after a major update. Apple needed to freshen the iTunes logo, but this looks more like a replacement icon than the real deal from Apple, ya' know?

I disagree that it's a problem with the icon sitting in my dock. It is a problem with the branding for a product.

I saved the ICNS file from iTunes 9 before I upgraded, and replaced the new icon with the old one. That's an easy fix. I don't use the iTunes store or Ping so I don't think I'll really be looking at the branding elsewhere.

The icon isn't the problem, it's what you see when you click on it!

I agree, to be honest I couldn't give a crap about the icon lol. The icon is there for people to click not to stare at. And speaking of the new interior.... WTF it's all plain and grey :(

does anyone else think that the icon looks fine on its own, but only when you have it in the dock next to finder, safari, mail, ical, etc it looks weird and out of place?

...

Agreed the new icon sucks but it doesn't really matter. I am guessing they will change it to something else soon enough. The vertical dots also suck but I do understand that the vertical icons allow more vertical screen to show because they used to be above the start of the actual app data on their own line. Regardless it is slightly odd that it now looks like a stop light. I don't love the colorless iTunes
