I think they should remove the musical note as well as the cd and replace them both with a big dollar sign $ to represent all the money they hope to suck out of our bank accounts.

I could understand if there weren't that many significant changes to iTunes however, with Ping, I can understand why Jobs would want a new look. I don't mind it. Looking forward to getting the most out of it.

I don't know.

Most icons Apple create are some what based on a real object.
like XCode you have hammer and some graph paper.
Pages get ink and a pen. etc...

this logo is rather un-apple in that sense. And it's sticking out in the dock.

my pet peeve

I'm annoyed that you can't use your iTunes Store Nickname for your screen name. Having to put your real name is annoying as *&X?2@!*

The trouble is that digital music is no longer based on a physical object/format

Apple is basically declaring the CD dead by this change

I think in a subconscious way people object to this, thus the hate for the icon itself.

This is silly. You complain about a silly little icon, when iTunes have major performance issues staying unsolved for years.

If you think the icon is bad, try syncing an iPhone while playing an video podcast!

Still why a hammer for XCode?
why a pen for Pages?

If that's the trend, iTunes should at least get a turntable.

Yeah that one is a joy to look at... ;)

I said that it has more depth, not that I liked it better.

I like the "purple" one. If it's large, you see the Ipod, movie camera and other details. If it's small, you just see some texture.

Texture is good.

And, I also believe that the Itunes name should be killed. It's no longer appropriate. Itunes is an overgrown mess that is both an application and an e-commerce site (as well as a DRM policeman and firmware updater). Make a clearer separation of the functions (and maybe that will help remove some of the bloat from the pig).

(And before the sheep start bleating - remember all the posts about how "PowerMac" and "PowerBook" were iconic names, and Apple couldn't change them without ruining the brand recognition? All the cliché posts about things "flying off the shelves like hotcakes" today show that brand management is more than "never change anything".)

And programming code is also not made with a hammer or an graphing paper (referring to the Xcode icon).

The new icon does suck, very windows-like...I'm getting a little bit lost trying to find itunes on the dock because of this change.

I didn't like it at first and thought it was ugly but I like it now :) I think it looks great on the dock!

Tbh I've never really liked the idea of having a cd in the logo. I know iTunes started out for ripping CDs onto the computer for your iPod but since the iTunes store took off and more and more people have gone to downloads I'm glad they changed it.

I agree with Steve that I disagree with the negative thoughts but hey not everyone will like it, but I think apple did the right thing :)

I agree 100%.

Not that bad of an icon, but the new iTunes interface is a little funny looking. The lack of color icons seemed good for a change at first, but I actually preferred the color because it was easier to recognize each feature in the source bar. Not as bad as the recent Digg.com website revision though...

With national security at an all time high. Is this really the time to get so worked up over a silly icon? I'd hate to be around you when something bad happens and everyone is running to safety and your throwing a fit over a silly icon.

Change is good. Remember when Apple went from the iconic rainbow logo to the sliver one that we have now? Change is good.

What's that a DVD?

i think Steve is brilliant.

But I disagree with him on this. Bring back the CD.

You can argue that itunes have moved beyond CD importing (not true for all of us) based on itunes store sales. But if that is justification for dropping the CD from the icon, then a similar argument can be made to drop "tunes" from the name since itunes as it has moved beyond just music.

Itunes will not change its name because it has a history that started with music. That history includes CDs. So keep the CD in the icon.

Rip, Mix, Burn

Do you not know that there is an entire generation of children who don't know what a CD is. You show them one and they think it's a DVD. They have never bought one and there is no CD player in their house.
