They made the icon more colourful and the program less so :D but in all seriousness i changed my whole OS X appearance to graphite and now iTunes fits right in :p

Now that's a horrible icon.

the icon goes very well with the new quicktime... its impressive how some people get so ticked off with small changes.

NEWSFLASH: You can edit the icon! :O
go into the iTunes.app subdirectories, open contents, open resources, then replace iTunes.icns with an icon of your choice, but with the same name. DONE! No more hated icon, although, i like it... you may have to remove iTunes from your dock and put it back for that icon to change though, and reload the applications folder.

I would rather have a good app with a crappy icon than a bad app with an awesome icon. Who cares?

Personally, I've long been of the opinion that you make one damn good logo at the start and you never change it.

Take the London Underground roundel. Never changed (save for typeface used). Instantly recognisable.
Mercedes, McDonalds, Aston Martin, etc.
Coca Cola. Designed well, never changed, instantly recognisable.

The Apple logo, while it wasn't the original logo, is a reasonable example of this and was changed to very early on. Good design, only updated a little bit now and then.

I'd like to point out I'm neither a fan of the old logo or of the new one.

I like the new logo. I agree that the CD needed to be removed. There's nothing wrong with updating.

As for that, you're comparing apples (no pun intended) and oranges. iTunes is generally not known by its icon, like McDonalds/Mercedes/etc. Therefore, updating the icon doesn't have the effect it would if, say, McDonalds went to a green tri-arch.

25 pages of people whining about an icon they probably look at three times a week, for at most half a second each time. Priceless.

In other news, users complain about "plain ugly" iPod dock connector. News at 11.

+1. iTunes is a brand, not an icon.

I do not dislike the new icon...it is just a matter of habit...in a few months when you'll have a look at the old one you'll think it is old fashionned...

What I do not find nice is the loss of logo colors in iTunes...like the music, movies, podcasts logos that are now all grey while they had nice colors in the past...

I can see the desire to remove the CD portion. But this does look like somebody new to MS Word went crazy with clip art and fill-styles.

I actually chuckled when I saw it first time, glad I'm not the only one!

I half agree.
I'd argue it probably is known by its icon, but not as well as it could be if they designed one damn good logo and stuck to it.
It doesn't have the same effect because the original icon wasn't good enough for the job either.

Generally, logos that are extremely well known are also an excellent piece of design. If you get the design right in the first instance there should be no need for a change of logo.

I'm sure the new icon's been well planned with a new target audience in mind.

could be to enter a new geographical location, ie. Far East, Middle East or Africa, could be an age group, ie. 40+, could be a social marketing group, ie. ABC1, or it could be to target corporate markets.

100 million global iTunes account holders is not a lot if 60% of them never pay for anything, ie the account is just for the free iPod / iPhone apps.

I was excited when he announced there would be a new icon, but was instantly dissapointed at what I saw. "amaturish" seems like a good word for it.

I won't lose any sleep over it though. I'm sure it is a small part of a grand scheme...

I agree it is amaturish in a small dock.

In big size it looks fine. In small dock it looks strange.

In small dock it does not fit in with any other of my icons. It is too small.

!How to change back!

Find something that looks like the old icon, f.ex. this:

How to change the icon

Next time you start iTunes the icon is back.
And next time you update iTunes you have to do this again.

I DID IT!

But then itunes 10 is awesome. I love it.

Sure why not? Do I care what the icon looks like? I mean what if Apple kept the CD but changed the color? Perhaps went back to the old pink, purple or even green. Would you throw a fit then?

and I'm just responding to the guy talking above about experience/no experience. Read a little of the posts before making such comments.

If you do not care, why bother arguing with people who don't like the icon? I can't understand people who can't take others' perspective (but can take an icon change :D). I am mad at the icon because the icon is a complete departure from the old ones. The wrapped musical note in the icon gives a feeling that it's not serious. If Apple changed the color of the note, well, it's okay, because regular consumers can still recognize it's iTunes as the main theme is kept.

For the 'experience' part, it seems you were the one who brought up the topic School. In addition to taking Reading Comprehension 101, you may also want to take Logical Thinking 101 and Staying on Topic 101.

I appreciate the fact that you've so much time to argue with people on the Internet. :) Thanks for commenting :)

615 Comments (and counting)

615 Comments about... the iTunes icon?! Seriously? Okay, its Labor Day weekend so turn off your "device of choice", go outside, and get some fresh air!!

I'm going to work.

BTW, when are we starting the next round of Verizon iPhone chatter? I miss all of your thoughts on that topic...

iTunes has gone down the ******* a long time ago and now it has the worst icon I have ever seen... Off the dock it comes. Spotify and Lastfm all the way.

If the icon is the main problem then apple should be happy.... besides they really needed to move away from the CD based old logo.

You can argue that itunes have moved beyond CD importing (not true for all of us) based on itunes store sales. But if that is justification for dropping the CD from the icon, then a similar argument can be made to drop "tunes" from the name since itunes as it has moved beyond just music.

I think this is a really good point. I totally agree.

Well, there's certainly no getting away from the fact that the new icon is rubbish. I expect that I will eventually get over the fact that I don't recognise it as being iTunes on my Dock but this does not get away from the overall shoddiness of it. When you compare this icon with those that Apple provides for its over applications it is clear that this one seems to have been designed by someone else, possibly on their lunch break. This one simply looks "flat" and it's dull. I can understand why the icon was changed, and why Steve drew attention to this during the presentation, but the actual product should have been different.

Ultimately, it is "just" an icon and not really important. However, as we all know, it is the little things and attention to detail that makes Apple products special. To me, this design just irks and that's something I'm not used to.

Its okay - after a few months I wont even remember the old one so meh.

I think the Icon would be slightly more powerful if (♫) note extended outside the circle as in the old logo - but really, thats only my preference.

I'm not a big fan of the desaturated interface though - it takes me significantly longer to comprehend where to click (I say significantly - I'm talking only a second, if that, but you know - it should be instant).
