Problem solved
It's much more fun harping about the artwork of the current app, and using that as a basis for predicting the demise of Apple. ;)

There's something very Windows Vista about the new logo if you ask me. The difference between a very professional looking aqua-esque icon, and a slightly amateurish one can be quite subtle, but it's what separates the good designers from the average ones — just look at the difference between Apple's icons and those of most third-party apps in the app store. But this is straight from Apple, and on their most prominent desktop software no less.

What happened??

Yes, the gradient and the overall feel except the white outline feels like the new Windows logo since Vista.

I have a notebook, so my dock is hidden unless I mouse over it. I didn't even realize there was a change until I saw this story. I say it's a whole lot of fuss over nothing.

If people have such a problem with the icon just change it, its just an icon!

I have to laugh at all of this. I just think it's funny how a new icon can cause so much controversy. To each his own. If you like it, keep it. If you don't, change it. Personally, I don't like it at all. Looks a little to "cartoony" for me, but that's my opinion. I kept my old icon that I've had forever...

It looks like a volume control icon. :D

I don't like the new icon much at all. I'm using all iPhone style icons in my dock and I'm loving them.

You can get them here: http://yaromanzarek.deviantart.com/gallery/ They're towards the bottom left of the page.

This logo is soooo weak, looks like a frickin child using KidPix made it. That's the best they could come up with? A music note with a blue background? Lame.

How far....

Oh Apple, how far you have fallen....lol

COMIC SANS FTW! :D

This is what I'd do: a nice photorealistic render of a high-end-looking aluminum speaker cone with a large Apple logo in the center that looks like it's screened on the aluminum. Clear what it's for, clear who it's from. This pic doesn't really fit the high-end look I had in mind, but you get the idea:

Somebody call Mike Matas. (Unless he's the one who did the new iTunes logo. :( )

Yep, this would be in line with the level of quality of Aperture's design:

Oh well, one supposes that we need some way of distinguishing the free apps from the 'paid for' apps. :)

The icon has grown on me and i've only seen it about 3 times now.

What seems to bother people more is the washed out icons for the Library, Store and Playlists tabs in iTunes. I like the new black and white look, but not many do.

I think Apple need to give users an option for these things. I mean, why can't they just have an OPTION for grayscale icons? Why don't we have an option of a tabs on top feature for Safari 5? Or if we want the dock on the top of the screen? Or if we want different themed windows?

I'm starting to worry that OSX 10.7 will have vertical Close/Minimize/Expand buttons, and will have grayscale icons for everything. It doesn't bother me too much, but come on apple, give us some options here!

I love OSX UI and design, and for me, probably 10x more than any customized Windows theme available, but I do like a bit of freedom too.

I could care less what the icon looks like. As probably stated numerous times in this thread, my only concern with anything new in iTunes is better stability and/or performace gains. All this talk about Ping and the new icon...

...although, if I had to speak on the icon, I'd say they could have made it pop a little more. More like the new Quicktime logo, that pops. This one is just a tad too 2D-ish, but whatever.

I guess Steve is getting colorblindness so he had to make everyone else colorblind as well. Just kidding :D
