Overboard

I think people need time to get used to this iTunes icon. I believe we have used the previous icon ever since iTunes debuted, only the music note changing colors.

I like the new icon.

But:

In the leftmost panel , those gray icons could be confusing. They suggest "disabled features".

The vertical buttons on the top of the window are too small, many users need a targeting system to click the right button...

Yeah . . . right. Take a look again buddy. ACTUAL Screenshots of this icon from my dock.

Sorry, your critique doesn't hold water.

Except that your little symbols within the icon DO "become virtually invisible and completely pointless" at that size. Maybe you only see them because you designed it. Unnecessary clutter at best. Maybe no worse than the Apple icon, but it doesn't do anything MORE for me.

itunes..

I am all for dropping the CD, as that is a dated icon, but at what point do they change the name of itunes? When itunes was introduced, its only purpose was to sell music. Now, the program offers so much more: tv shows, movies, apps, and books. Eventually, itunes will change to reflect its offerings. What would be a good encompassing name for the program that offers so much?

Open iTunes 9, Right Click> Show package contents>resources>Itunes.icns>Copy

Open iTunes 10, Right Click> Show package contents>resources>Itunes.icns>Paste

Remove Itunes Icon from Dock, From Applications, drag the new icon to the Dock

Done. :p

A much simpler and less intrusive way to do it would be to:

Select the iTunes application (in the folder, not the dock)

Get Info (⌘+I)

Open a desired icon pic using Preview

Copy image (⌘+C)

Paste image (⌘+V) in upper-left corner of Info window, replacing the previous icon.

Drag old icon from the Dock

Quit and re-start iTunes.

After trying several trial icon variations, I've returned to the genuine iTunes 10 icon.

It really seems more elegant, by comparison, IMO.

However, I'm totally digging that blue one with the concentric circles:

No matter what Steve or anyone else says... It sucks the big one!
I can't believe that u have a crappy generic icon after all these years of a sort of OK icon. I understand the CD had to go but why would anyone design an iTunes blue icon and then give you a brand new sterile grayscale/graphite interface?
The new Quicktime icon is cool, following a familiar design that was about 20 years old... http://www.thelogofactory.com/logo_blog/index.php/new-design-for-apple-quicktime-logo/
Why couldn't they keep the 3D effect at least... Plain dumb and horrible.

my quicktime logo is blue, not purple

new logo +1

I actually thought the old logo was pretty lame as most of the iLife icons are as well. I really like the new iTunes icon. It is fresh and still simple.

Reading this message thread is the last 15 minutes of my life I'll never get back. I would have liked to see Apple make the icon stand out more on the Windows Vista and Windows 7 taskbar, though.

Ouch, yes, all for updating but looks amateurish, aesthetics sell Macs so it is disproportionately important. My kneejerk was to banish it from the dock, which I did, and I wondered how many people followed suit and will potentially miss out on what the application has to offer. Mind you, VLC player's icon is a road cone!

I would have retained the iconic aqua notes but set within a new container background, my preference being circular. If I find an icon that suits, I will reinstate. I suspect the present icon will evolve in the next iTunes update.

There are quite a few ideas here. And the cool part is that it shows everyone is still quite concerned about how Apple engages some of its thought processes.

Icon Designer Perspective :

Generally feel that there is a pursuit of a circular shape which is very un-Apple like in their usual icon design. They tend to engage real world objects shapes which aren't button-shaped(hence circular). The image above shows that quite clearly. That is what probably eeks alot of the design conscientious individuals with the lack of consistency. Icon in large, not too bad, usual intricacy in details are missing, still a pretty neat use of colours in the logo! Too subtle that it blends in like dashboard. But like some have mentioned, put it there long enough and it becomes the brand, no biggee.

Theorist Perspective :

Brand is still the same and Apple may have something new up its sleeve with 10.7. UI ? iTunes a testing ground? do some screenshots and that will come up evidently as well. Is Steve aesthetically insensible ? Highly unlikely. So he must have approved this icon and I am pretty sure there's lots of thought process involved in the choice ... probably more than "a surpass of CD sales".

User Perspective :

Hmm new icon. new iTunes. what's Ping ? Hmm how come my collection is all gray scale. Oops where's that icon again ? 1 month later. iTunes .. browse for track ... good I bought that one , ooo my friend on FaceBook likes the song **crystal-ball in process**

MacRumors Perspective :

Woah! We do have a huge community! Hello everyone! Yeah! amazing how Steve replied so quickly! Glad he even did!

I like the new icon...

It's clean and simple. I dislike anything over-designed and contrived so it works for me. And looks great on the dock-- just like the new CS5 icons are great: They're graphic, sleek and clean.

BTW, what kind of wireless sound system are you running?

What do you mean? Just an Airport Express, that's it. :)

I've modified my iTunes icon a bit. I'm definitely not a designer, mind you, but I kinda like it, a little more subdued...I might experiment with it a little more.

Subjectives aside, along with the Apple symbol the old iTunes symbol was most recognizably Apple and that is why I think it would have been better if they had retained the iconic aqua notation but set against a non CD background.

I don't use Tiger much anymore, but it's still installed and up until now I could update iTunes for both Leopard and Tiger and maintain just one actual database file (since they both used the same file and same version, it was safe). I just noticed today when booting into Tiger to do some updating that iTunes 10 is *NOT* available for it. There goes that idea. I can now either maintain separate databases (PITA) or just forget using iTunes for the most part in Tiger ever again. Thanks Apple.

Version 10 is SUCH a breakthrough, not wonder they suddenly dumped Tiger in September! It has PING and that would have been too much bother to compile for Tiger. Or maybe it's the retarded new stoplight vertical thing wouldn't work in Tiger? (I wish it wouldn't in Leopard and Snow Leopard; it's HIDEOUS to suddenly go vertical for no good reason what-so-ever and violates all Apple's own guidelines). Maybe Tiger doesn't like Black & White? :D

I like the new icon. But now all the other icons on my dock seem a little dated. How about a complete update Steve?

iTunes 10 is just the retro start. I think this is the look Steve is trying to achieve in 10.7 "Albino Minx":

Love the 'star-burst' effect - dynamic, aesthetically pleasing, and not overdone.

Well done!

I personally ****ing LOVE it. The old look of the entire iTunes including the logo was becoming totally dated.

But if more people hate it, maybe they should hold a contest to find a new one!

:D

A bone of contention here, but I think the comments that it looks to be made in MS Paint are trite. I do not like the new icon, but any designer worth their weight in salt understands that the tools are a means to an end. Something being made in paint does not exclude it from being good. Design predates the computer and good design is not relegated to any specific program or method.

Agreed and that is the first thing I thought when I saw the purple icon. The innards are nice but when scaled down don't serve a purpose really since they are barely legible.
