If you can reproduce this under a tower, then and only then can we hypothesize something might be wrong. In every other case the unknown variables make the evidence worthless.

I get what you are trying to do here, I really do.

And placing the tactless approach you seem to have chosen, I still think that you are wrong to state that only after someone sits under a tower and recreates this issue can we say that there is something wrong with the phone right now.

No need to beat an issue to death when it is so clear that the issue is real.

But that's not sufficient really. There could be other factors, such as the weather, altitude relative to sea level, magnetic field based on geographic location, lunar cycle, aurora borealis, etc. The only true test, would be in a light-less, vacuum, perhaps space would suffice? Although there are radiation belts and solar flares that could skew the results too.

I'm actually quite interested in getting an iphone4 as a replacement for my 3G.

Does this problem only occur when the space between the two antennas is bridged?

I just looked how I hold my 3G and I normally wouldn't hold it in such a way that I would cover the gap.

Quit asking Steve Jobs for free ****.

You really think the CEO of one of America's largest corporations is going to take time out of his day to ship you a bumper case?

A solution will come soon, patience people.

Please explain what you are trying to prove. You’re not making much sense.

hmm he isnt making any sense. what he is demanding isnt scientific at all. It also shows a lack of knowledge of how RF works....

but i am just a lowly engineer (masters in EE) who spent years working in the communications industry, what do i know

Christ. The point is that if over a million phones had the issue almost every phone on the market would be experiencing these troubles. And we all know that isn't the case. I thought that was quite obvious, but I can spell it out.

People who threw cases on didn't notice it? Easily possible.

patience is a virtue, learned it as a kid, no ones seems to remember it

Walking into these threads is starting to be like walking into a bar and seeing a bunch of dudes whipping their ****s out right before they fight.

Makes you just want to go somewhere else.

Not at all arn. I'm suggesting a lot of flamers, baiters, teenagers that want to complain about nothing and other types of negative thinking type people have joined this board and probably voted they had issues just to be complainers.

The amount of those type of people on this board skews the poll.

The poll can equally be skewed the other way, so it all sort of balances itself out. Just like your avatar.

Not in the least.

Look, I don't know that there is an issue or not. I don't know, and you don't either. All the evidence thus far has included too many unknowns to make a rational conclusion.

All we need to do is eliminate the variables, and produce the effect... and then we will be on to something.

Otherwise... it's just giggles in the dark.

Chances are there are at least 3 cell towers within a mile radius of you. Go check. And please report honestly. If you can get the call to drop underneath a tower, then there really is something to this. But in all other cases I've seen, all the links here, all the YouTube videos, every single piece of "evidence" published by Gizmodo, are completely worthless in regards to being able to make a rational conclusion.

People are basing their conclusions on the fact that they are in an every day situation, not standing underneath a tower.

Huh???

I'm not a fanboy by any stretch but damn it...I love it when Jobs proves the pundits/critics wrong...

And who exactly did he prove wrong? Do you know something the rest of us don't? Man you guys are really "true believers" and that is not a compliment.

This isn't a rational statement. The argument that there is or isn't an issue went out the window a while ago.

I'm not trying to prove anything. The burden of proof is upon those that are making the claims. What I am doing is denying that the proof they have thus far presented means anything, specifically, because they are ignoring all the unknowns, and refuse to eliminate them so we can really know or not.

If you want to go into burden of proof arguments, I'm sure arn and the rest of us would be glad to whoop you in more discussion-based debates

No one seems to want to try real science. (sigh) I must revert to screaming. I apologize in advance.

Find a cell tower. Stand underneath it with your iPhone 4. Make a call, and then reproduce the effect that drops the call.

Actually i find this whole post funny. It would be even funnier if 500,000 iphone 4 owners all ran out and stood under cell phone towers. Department of Homeland Security would freak..

Peace, I've been here nearly as long as you (coming up on 5 years), so I'm not a new flamer, baiter, etc.

Between mine, my wife's, both of her parents, my brother, 6 different friends/acquaintances, and 7 co-workers (which is every person that I personally know that has the iPhone 4 by the way); EVERY SINGLE phone has exhibited the exact same antenna band issue, losing reception when you touch the lower left hand corner area in question. Also keep in mind that not one of these folks has ever been on this site, much less been able to vote in Arn's poll regarding their antenna woes.

While that sample size may not appease you, I can tell you that in my opinion, the folks in Cupertino have a MAJOR issue on their hands right now.
Woah! 5 years posting on here, that's got to count for something. I'm glad I held off.

I used to be a scientist and am now working for the company that made the first working UMTS cellphone prototype.

Please accept this: both your grasp of science and of communications tech is severly lacking and I suggest you quit trying to argue here with all these people who are obviously having an issue with their phone that is not make believe and in fact very reproducible.

Well, I think I will wait for a couple more months before I upgrade my old 3G.

Cause I far as I can see, outside of the reception issues, the iPhone 4 causes some sort of uncontrollable "28 Days Later" like rage.

Or the fact that hes arguing with people who are much more qualified and some of us don't even have an issue because of our own variables!
