So, uh, two things:

A. This confirms that he lied to everyone--most importantly shareholders--6 months ago.
B. This confirms that he, like Mickey Mantle before him, officially thinks he is better than everyone else on the waiting list for livers.

So he is a liar and a narcissist. Not a big shock considering we're talking about the Steve Jobs.

daringfireball has done some interesting analysis of this 'leaked' information. it does seem all a bit to convenient; and well from looking over the past month's rumors it does seem feasible though.

Oh my gosh. This is such a shock. I have taken care of many patients who have had liver transplants. According to current transplant guidelines, you have to be as sick as a dog (read: will die within about 1 week without transplant) to receive one. This pretty much means that all those rumors of him "on his death bed" were likely true. This is really the only way to get a liver; its not solely first-come, first-serve.

I hope this puts to rest that Steve will not be doing any Keynotes anymore. Sure, he will be able to live his life, but will likely no longer be able to do anything as strenuous. He very well may come back to Apple though, but I doubt he'll be running the show. The long term affects of the immunosuppressants he will be on for the rest of his life will be very draining. I wish him the best health possible.

No, this confirms three things:

A. It's quite possible he had absolutely no fricking idea.
B. His condition could have thrown him to the top of the list.
C. You're an anti-fanboy who jumps to conclusions and down people's throats.

Sure, it would be considered unethical, but I really don't think he could have pulled the strings to get a liver. We all would like to think that people can't "buy" livers in the US, but I could be wrong. I really don't want to think of our healthcare system in the way, so I am going to go with he was very sick.

My guess is "B". He probably thought he wasn't that sick at first and his condition deteriorated. Or, he could have just been in denial. Anyways, towards the end (regardless of "where" he started), he likely was extremely sick.

One more thing, this really proves that he has no residual cancer. Doctors in the US never transplant an organ into a patient with a known malignancy.

A. is speculation on your part. And often times these things do come out of nowhere especially when a doctor is focused on other seemingly unrelated heath issues.

And B. is just you being nasty. We do not the circumstances of the transplant.

I'm not saying Steve Jobs isn't a liar or a narcissist but nothing you are saying confirms that.

As an esophageal cancer survivor who had to keep working to support my family, even when I was originally told I had only four months, all I can say is...

If I had Jobs' money, I'd spend most/all of my future time with my wife and kids !

Mine was bad enough, but pancreatic? Get real. Forget work. Live some. Although I suppose some people live for work.

It's obvious that Steve's people leaked this story. Its timing is perfect:

1. Its the weekend (so it can't hurt the stock price and won't slam the newswires)
2. Its right after a major product launch (allowing the iphone to steal news time from this story)
3. Its the week before he's going to return (so now he doesn't have to explain much)

I wonder if he owns the Gulfstream jet he used for these trips or if its company property (if its company property Apple might have some legal problems...connect the use of the jet to the company "knowing" and "assisting" in covering up the health problems of a major executive.

Someone should find Al Gore and thank him for the hook-up (he's on the board and I think he pulled a few strings here for Steve).

you would like to know? It was Apple Inc. and Steve himself who off record souced this to the WSJ. Steve is coming back to work and could not continue to hide the transplant info so he and Apple strageically released it on 1) the day of a hugely successful product launch so good news would come with bad and 2) on a Friday evening to soften the stock blow after 2 days of thought before investors decide to act on Monday. This story comes straight from Jobs himself, I promise.

I completely agree. Jobs himself leaked this to the WSJ knowing that it was ultimately going to come out. Timing is everything- media dump it after midnight on Friday night, blunting the stock blow. Also, cleverly in the story was the not-so-subtle hint that Jobs will be stepping down and Tim Cook will be his replacement. This story is setting the stage so when the replacement is named, it won't be too surprising to stockholders, hopefully preventing a stock price tumble.

For proof, look no further than the first line of the WSJ story- by this I mean the FIRST WORDS.... the byline. The author of this story is Yukari Iwatani Kane. She has had a history of seemingly inside information from Apple in the past, always delivered in a surprisingly timely manner for Apple stock, and always sourced to "Apple insiders".

I'd bet anything Steve has her number on his iPhone.

How sweet would it to be able to say "Steve Jobs has part of my liver."?

The donor will be dead, so won't be saying a whole lot about Steve Jobs new liver.
I very much doubt he got a partial donation from a living donor. As this is still a very new procedure, and to my knowledge not an operation currently performed on adults anyway.

he hasn't got much longer to live if this is true.. surprised he doesn't retire..

If its true, and the operation went well, then hes got plenty of years left in him yet. Ignore the person who said 5 years max. Thats BS.
Hes got an easy 10 years, and likely plenty more than that. Again, this is assuming all went well. Liver transplants are not exactly routine, but the success rate these days is still very good.

-------------------

How do I know? My mother (who is a similar age to Steve) had a liver transplant just over 5 years ago. Shes doing just great now, and has no side effects. Just a regular intake of anti rejection drugs is all she needs to live an otherwise perfectly normal life.
Its one hell of an operation too.. And quite harrowing (to say the least) for all friends & family members involved.

I sincerely hope Steve is doing well :)

Interesting point and first time i've heard this mentioned. Al Gore is on the Board of Apple, and is friends with Steve. Al Gore was the VP of the United States, Senator from Tennessee, and currently lives in Tennessee.

Is it unthinkable or is it possible Al Gore could be powerful enough to pull some strings and get someone pushed to the head of the liver transplant line?

I agree with this. He can potentially live a long life, but as you point out, there are many, many unknown variables. As for him picking up where he left off at Apple (working 15 hour days, negotiating on Christmas Eve, etc.), I don't think so. He'll probably just continue in a consultant role.

While I'm obviously happy that he's receiving treatment, I can't help but cringe at the AAPL plunge that will occur Monday morning.

Talk about a PR s**tstorm...and it's rightly deserved, IMHO, because Apple has handled this entire matter horribly from start to finish.

I am not too worried about Apple as the recession is what is the problem here. Times are tough for most companies.

But I am worried about Steve. If he needs more time off to get healthier, I am all for it. Get well, Steve.

Yes, but the CAUSE of this liver transplant (metastatic pancreatic cancer) has an extremely poor prognosis even with a pancreaticoduodenectomy (5 year all-cause mortality >95%). In the case of metastatic disease, I would expect that mortality would be even greater. Pancreatic cancer is hard to find, difficult to treat and aggressive. I wish him the best.

We are assuming this is metastatic...however, that does seem likely. Previously I thought it was reported SJ had digestive enzyme problems and that was the reason for weight loss...it may rather be a knock on systemic effect due to reduced pancreatic secretions and enzyme production.

Interesting how this rumor by Microsoft's Steve Balmer has created so much buzz. Naturally he had to publish it now to blunt the excitement of the iPhone 3G S.

Watch for the new Microsoft smart phone soon.

Consultant? That's fine with me.

The guy is a genius and even small contributions from him are golden, but he's not immune to the disease of pancreatic cancer. He really needs to seriously consider slowing down his work schedule permanently if he does come back to work.

Haha I just saw that episode of Curb. I can just picture Jobsy having to pretend to be an orthodox Jew to get Al onside.
