apple search is coming..

"Steve: They're not a search company. They're an AI company. We have no plans to go into the search business. We don't care about it -- other people do it well."

Same thing he said about phone business, then the famous what is a tablet is useful for comment from him. Apple may not get into AI business, but search is coming i guess.

Not necessarily. What's the point of building a search engine? To sell advertising, right? Only way to make money. Now that you have a large number of people stuck in the app world (iphone, ipad, AppleTV maybe) maybe his ultimate goal is to actually get people off of using a browser at all - in the device space. Serve up ads using iAd within the aps. Should be more money there than google's keyword ads ...

Nonsense.

You're confusing market cap with assets with research budget. And it's a bad confusion at that. Come back when you figure out the difference.

$42 billion in cash is poor? Apple can afford all the R&D it wants to....I think you should learn to be a tad perspicacious my friend .... the reality distortion field is getting to you

"7:03PM Steve: I can tell you as one of the largest sellers of content on the internet to date -- price it aggressively and go for volume. That has worked for us. I'm trying to get the press to do the same thing. They need to do it differently than they do it for print."

Finally, maybe Men's Health won't be 5 bucks an issue anymore...highway f$%*ing robbery...

>>>Walt: But didn't your system drive prices of books upward? Isn't that opposite of what you just said?

Certainly isn't a tame interview. He's got some serious questions and is pushing Steve when needed.

So are you saying Apple should have built their own Flash player?

Because keep in mind Flash 10.1, which is the first version of Flash that comes close to working OK on mobile, has released in beta...this month.

How were they ever going to put it on the iPhone or iPad?

7:07PM Steve: You know... (long pause). I'm trying to think of a good analogy. When we were an agrarian nation, all cars were trucks. But as people moved more towards urban centers, people started to get into cars. I think PCs are going to be like trucks. Less people will need them. And this is going to make some people uneasy.

I definitely need more than a tablet to get work done.

Indeed, very good questions from Walt. And Steve came out as genuine person. Of course, ever since I heard his speech at Stamford, I respect him more.

...13 suicides out of 400,000 workers this year is less than the U.S. rate of 11 per 100,000, but it's still troubling.

Comparing suicide rates of a nation to that of a corporation is completely idiotic. Big fail on that one Stevo.

Steve is very disingenuous. Saying "we don' have the resources others have" (when commenting on why Apple doesn't support Flash)....are you kidding me? The 2nd highest market cap in the world and over $40 billion in cash ....

Money doesn't write software. Engineers do. There are companies (and even Indian outsource firms) with a lot more engineers than Apple.

Hmm, Steve's bringing up an interesting topic: the post-PC era.

When we were an agrarian nation, all cars were trucks. But as people moved more towards urban centers, people started to get into cars. I think PCs are going to be like trucks. Less people will need them. And this is going to make some people uneasy.

A great analogy. And its true — I think the iPad (and the iPhone, to a lesser extent) is the first step to the death of the laptop as a mainstream device.

LOL, seems like he is not going to kill any of the "Apple hate" with this interview.

Comparing Flash to Hypercard...saying he doesn't want America to "descend into a nation of bloggers." HAHAHA

Again, nonsense. All you see are numbers. Big numbers = can afford to you.

You have no sense for budgeting a project or whether or not it's wise to do that in a long term strategic sense, and the side implications of owning that standard.

Don't be a lazy thinker. There's more to it than that.

look what the "netbooks have done to the laptop market if you want a decent laptop under 500 its hard to find anything good that isnt a netbook.

best quote so far
" Steve: People laugh at me when I say it's magical... but something has been stripped away and removed between you and the computer..."

iPad is just that, there is no "effort" in using an iPad, thats why its magical.

A great analogy. And its true — I think the iPad (and the iPhone, to a lesser extent) is the first step to the death of the laptop as a mainstream device.

The laptop has a strong presence in academics and in business. As of now, a laptop can be as powerful as a desktop. I think all else being equal, the laptop will always be more powerful than a tablet. For work type use I think it is irreplaceable.

Yes I'm saying that there's a time and place to ditch Flash.. and that time certainly isn't now..... HTML5 is far from being mature it is in fact at this time a joke.... Apple certainly had more than ample resources to make Flash work on its devices.... there are business reasons for not doing so... I will not be buying an iPad because I want the whole internet experience and the iPad certainly won't deliver on that front.... once gain Steve was being disingenuous when Walt asked him what happens when you hit a hole when browsing (i.e. lack of flash)? Steve brushed it off responding that these were quickly being plugged (false) and that the majority were ads in any event (once gain false).....

Steve is looking really thin. Also, Engadget's coverage is way better than CNET's. I dropped CNET when the guy/gal lost battery...
