In two years, the iPad will have almost the same specs of laptops today...it could be very interesting to see how far they can push iPhone OS.

The laptop has a strong presence in academics and in business. As of now, a laptop can be as powerful as a desktop. I think all else being equal, the laptop will always be more powerful than a tablet. For work type use I think it is irreplaceable.

Trucks and tractors have a strong presence on the farm. Trucks are much better at hauling timber to build barns for all your livestock. Irreplaceable if you still grow your own food. You do still do that, don't you?

And people still use trucks (even in the city) to transport heavy payloads. But most average Joes and Janes go to the Cinema or Walmart with their small car. Get's you there, nothing more... web browsing, e-mail, video, music, books...

7:19PM Steve: We're doing the best we can, we're fixing mistakes. But what happens is -- people lie. And then they run to the press and tell people about this oppression, and they get their 15 minutes of fame. We don't run to the press and say "this guy is a son of a bitch liar!" -- we don't do that.

I like steve today, he's getting his side of the story out.

great .... he became an arbiter of free speech and censor extraordinaire

He's a little quick to take credit for WebKit, which only really started going after they properly open-sourced their changes, and it was originally based on KHTML. It's a clear win for open source -- and a great demonstration of how, why, and where open source wins. It's not, however, a demonstration of how great Apple is. It took years for them to do more than the bare minimum of source release required by the licence, which was pointed out by the KHTML developers as both decidedly uncool and impossible to incorporate improvements into the main KHTML branch.

Aside from that, pretty standard review responses. He did get a minor chuckle from me with the "They should make a movie." comment, regarding the prototype. The description of the Adobe situation was pretty slanted though. No, they didn't really (seem) to set out to 'start a war', but they sure as hell aren't being classy in their response, with the iPhone devkit agreement change. Skip the Flash plugin? Fine. Kill an alternate development environment (several, actually) just because you're a little annoyed/egotistical? Not classy.

Yes I'm saying that there's a time and place to ditch Flash.. and that time certainly isn't now..... HTML5 is far from being mature it is in fact at this time a joke.... Apple certainly had more than ample resources to make Flash work on its devices.... there are business reasons for not doing so... I will not be buying an iPad because I want the whole internet experience and the iPad certainly won't deliver on that front.... once gain Steve was being disingenuous when Walt asked him what happens when you hit a hole when browsing (i.e. lack of flash)? Steve brushed it off responding that these were quickly being plugged (false) and that the majority were ads in any event (once gain false).....

But how to do it? Should they have built their own Flash player? Should they have waited for Adobe to deliver a working version of Flash for mobile? I guess they could have held back on releasing the iPad but that would have been extremely stupid, given the huge head start they now have in the tablet space.

Another thing to consider, WHY did it take Adobe so long to deliver this? I think the clear answer is that it's a fairly big technological challenge, and Narayen admitted as much a year ago when Apple was still open to Flash.

The way people talk about this they make it sound like Jobs DROPPED the Flash player from his machines, when in fact there was never one to begin with.

Kara: What do you do all day? What is your day like?

What a great time to say - my sex life is great. How's yours!

supporting "flash" should have been a "backward compatibility" nightmare. Who wants to depend on adobe to extend their platform. Apple wants to control their own destiny for their platform and want to upgrade hardware, software on apple's schedule, not adobe's.

It's a private store, not a public place. You can throw people out of your house (or garage sale in your yard) if you think their speech would upset you or your other guests.

It's only censorship if you're the government, and outlaw it everywhere.

Wow. I am stunned at how fragile he looks. I wish the guy well but to my eyes he looks bad...

I had the same impression. I'm sure he has a very restrictive diet after his surgery. I swear they guy is just a buck fifty in weight right now. Also, with his openness for the last year, I think he knows his time may be near and it trying go out on a high note being as active as possible.

Few out there have such a proper mix of genius, stage presence and business smarts as SJ does. Apple will survive and I'm sure there will be a building with Steve's name on in at several college campuses sooner than we all anticipate. The fact that is biography is in the works says something right there.

His comments are very valid. Very few get to lead their industry from inception to sunset. SJ is doing just that seeing PC's are "trucks" and tablets as "sedans" as a transition metaphor. Go get 'em guy. While I turned down working for you, there is still respect.

I like this analogy...

We have a mini-van and a prius. We also have a macPro, macBook-Pro and iPads...

Judging from Steve's response about core values, the douchebags at Gizmodo are going to be in a world of hurt. :) Go, Steve!

why not give people CHOICE (that's a great concept isn't it?) - users would be able to disable the plug in if not satisfied with its performance or if system resources needed to be used efficaciously (i.e. extend battery life)....

I just don't understand what's that big hard on everyone has about laptops, MBPs, etc.. Maybe it's because I don't need to work on the go. I do design and coding, and I love my 24 inch with mouse and lapless-keyboard.

It seems so uncomfortable. But guess many people's work flow forces them into that way of living.

I didn't say it was unconstitutional ... I'm saying he's a censor!!!!! The guy won a bloody Pulitzer Prize for his work ----

we've been there multiple times on macrumors.com.
it's been explained multiple times.

AT&T handles more traffic than all other carriers combined? I'd like to see a citation on that one, as I'd be quick to call BS if there isn't something to back it up. There was an article recently about how Verizon already pushes out more data than AT&T since Verizon has sold more aircards which are the true devices that use data on a network.

here you go...

7:26PM Steve: You know, when this whole thing with Gizmodo happened, I got advice from people who said 'you gotta just let it slide, you shouldn't go after a journalist just because they bought stolen property and tried to extort you.' And I thought deeply about this, and I concluded the worst thing that could happen is if we change our core values and let it slide. I can't do that. I'd rather quit.

Way to go Steve... I'm with you.
